De themamaand heeft als doelstelling geschiedenis voor een breder publiek toegankelijker te maken. Tijdens de themamaand organiseren musea, archieven, bibliotheken, gemeentes en culturele instellingen speciale activiteiten rondom het jaarlijkse thema. Dit komt in de vormen van tentoonstelling

De komeet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) bereikt het perihelium op 27 september 2024.
De niet-periodieke komeet werd ontdekt in de eerste helft van januari 2023. Het object heeft een vrijwel parabolische baan, en dit is waarschijnlijk de eerste (en mogelijk enige) keer dat het langs de Zon scheert. De komeet bevindt zich tijdens het perihelium op een afstand van 0,39 AE van de Zon en op 0,91 AE van de Aarde. De helderheid van het object bedraagt dan magnitude +2,8. Bedenk hierbij dat het lastig is de helderheid van een komeet exact te voorspellen, zeker wanneer het object voor het eerst het centrale deel van het zonnestelsel bezoekt. Daarnaast is een komeet vaak onzichtbaar rond het moment van grootste helderheid, doordat deze zich dan te dicht bij de Zon aan de hemel bevindt. De komeet is zichtbaar met een helderheid groter dan achtste magnitude aan onze avondhemel tussen 12 oktober en 28 november 2024. Tot 11 oktober is het object in Nederland en België vrijwel onzichtbaar.
Wij zien de grootste helderheid rond 12 oktober: magnitude +1,0. Er is een verrekijker nodig met een apertuur van 15 mm of meer om het object op dat moment waar te nemen. Het meest gunstige moment om de komeet te bekijken vanuit onze streken is rond 21 oktober. Het object heeft dan een helderheid van +4,1m en een magnitudecontrast van -1,0m, in theorie voldoende om met het blote oog waargenomen te worden, maar vermoedelijk is de ondersteuning van een verrekijker (in de hand of op statief) nodig. Merk op dat een diffuse komeet lastiger waar te nemen is dan een ster met dezelfde helderheid. De dichtste nadering van C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) tot de Aarde gebeurt rond 12 oktober. De afstand bedraagt dan 0,47 AE, circa 71 miljoen km, dus niet al te ver weg. Na het perihelium vinden we het object onder meer in de sterrenbeelden Slang, Slangendrager en Adelaar.

Hurricane Helene (/hɛˈliːn/, heh-LEEN) is a hurricane, the eighth named storm, fifth hurricane, and second major hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, Helene developed from a broad area of low pressure in the Western Caribbean Sea in late September that the National Hurricane Center (NHC) first began watching on September 17, 2024.
By September 24, the disturbance had consolidated enough to become a tropical storm as it approached the Yucatán Peninsula, receiving the name Helene. Gradual intensification then ensued due to favorable conditions, with the cyclone becoming a hurricane early on September 25. Pronounced and eventually rapid intensification ensued as Helene entered the Gulf of Mexico by the following day, with it reaching Category 4 intensity on the evening of September 26. Late on September 26, Helene made landfall at peak intensity in the Big Bend region of Florida, with maximum sustained winds of 220 km/h. In advance of the expected landfall of Helene, the governors of Florida and Georgia both declared a state of emergency due to the significant impacts expected including very high storm surge and hurricane-force gusts as far inland as Atlanta. Hurricane warnings also extended further inland. As of September 27, a total of ten deaths so far have been attributed to Helene, both direct and indirect.

World Gorilla Day creates the opportunity for people all over the world to come together in celebrating the gorilla, and more importantly, taking action to protect gorillas in the wild.
2017 was the inaugural year for World Gorilla Day and it also marked the fiftieth anniversary of Karisoke Research Center, operated by The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI). Established by Dian Fossey, Karisoke is the longest running gorilla field study site dedicated to the conservation, protection, and study of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. There are many great organizations and individuals dedicated to fighting for their survival, but greater awareness and investment are essential to gaining ground for gorillas. World Gorilla Day strives to be a rallying point for bolstering appreciation and action for these great apes. On the 8th anniversary of World Gorilla Day, there is much to celebrate as a community and thank the good work of partner organizations and individuals working around the world to make a difference for gorillas. In 2024, once again World Gorilla Day is inviting ALL to answer the call for gorillas: Individuals, organizations and conservationists of all kinds are invited to join the World Gorilla Day celebration on September 24 to help give a voice to one of our closest relatives.
