#SailToGaza Global Sumud Flotilla
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF; Arabic: أسطول الصمود العالمي, romanized: Usṭūl aṣ-Ṣumūd al-ʿĀlamī), sometimes referred to as the Global Freedom Flotilla (أسطول الحرية العالمي, Usṭūl al-Ḥurriyya al-ʿĀlamī), is an international, civil society-led maritime initiative launched in mid-2025, aiming to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.
It is named from ṣumūd, Arabic for ‘steadfastness’ or ‘resilience’. The initiative emerged in July 2025, organised by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, Global Movement to Gaza, and Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, among others, during the Gaza war. The flotilla comprises over 50 vessels with thousands of participants from more than 44 countries. Some attempts to break the Israeli blockade were successful before 2010, but since then ships have been intercepted or attacked by Israeli forces, most recently in June and July, with another vessel attacked by drones in May 2025. The flotilla began to set sail late August 2025 with delegations and convoys departing from Malaysia, Genoa, and Barcelona, followed by Catania, Syros, and Tunis early September. Some convoys initially faced temporary stoppages and delayed departures due to high winds and a significant storm. On 3 September, the Italian convoy reached Sicily and Tunisian vessels began converging on Tunis. Four days later, part of the Spanish convoy arrived in northern Tunisia, where in the early hours of 9 September, a fire broke out on one of the main vessels, suspected to be a drone attack. A second incendiary attack was reported the following night an another vessel. By 17 September, the Spanish and Tunisian convoys were approaching Sicily to join up with the Italian fleet. On 19 September, the convoy departed heading east. The initiative has received support from some over a dozen foreign ministers, Italian politicians and political parties, MPs in Spain and Portugal, the President of Colombia Gustavo Petro, and the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese. In contrast, Israeli minister of national security Itamar Ben-Gvir has claimed that participants should be imprisoned as terrorists and the Israeli Navy has conducted preparatory maritime drills. The EU Commission has stated that they do not support aid flotillas to Gaza.

Iedereen aan tegen kanker – collecteweek KWF Kankerbestrijding (Radio 2 NPO)
Vanaf zondag 31 augustus tot en met 6 september 2025 gaan tienduizenden collectanten langs de deuren om geld in te zamelen voor KWF Kankerbestrijding.
1 op de 2 Nederlanders krijgt ooit de diagnose kanker. De ziekte raakt ons allemaal. De opbrengst van de collecte wordt door KWF besteed aan baanbrekend kankeronderzoek en betere zorg en ondersteuning voor (ex)kankerpatiënten. De collecteweek is onderdeel van de campagne ‘Iedereen aan tegen kanker’. Tegenwoordig is de 5-jaarsoverlevingskans al 70% terwijl dat bij de oprichting van KWF in 1949 nog maar 25% was. Ook al is de overlevingskans verbeterd, toch is er nog heel veel werk te doen. Steeds meer mensen krijgen kanker en bijna iedereen wordt er direct of indirect mee geconfronteerd. Of je het nu zelf hebt, of iemand om wie je geeft, kanker ontwricht je leven. Ook is de overlevingskans voor sommige kankersoorten nog steeds klein. Meer onderzoek is hard nodig om ook daar verschil te maken. De collecte is onderdeel van de landelijke campagne ‘Iedereen aan tegen kanker’. Met deze campagne wil KWF Kankerbestrijding Nederland massaal in beweging brengen om geld te doneren voor (meer) wetenschappelijk onderzoek. De campagne is door het hele land te zien en loopt tot en met 6 september. Daarnaast zet ook NPO Radio 2 zich opnieuw in voor KWF. De programmering van NPO Radio 2 staat de hele week in het teken van het vervullen van wensen van luisteraars die geraakt zijn door de ziekte. Geld doneren tijdens de collecteweek is eenvoudig. De collectanten hebben een collectebord met een QR-code die gescand kan worden met de mobiele telefoon. Online doneren kan ook via de website van het KWF.

Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances / Dag voor de Slachtoffers van Gedwongen Verdwijningen 2025
Enforced disappearance has frequently been used as a strategy to spread terror within the society, the feeling of insecurity generated by this practice is not limited to the close relatives of the disappeared, but also affects their communities and society as a whole.
Enforced disappearance has become a global problem and is not restricted to a specific region of the world. Once largely the product of military dictatorships, enforced disappearances can nowadays be perpetrated in complex situations of internal conflict, especially as a means of political repression of opponents. Of particular concern are:
- the ongoing harassment of human rights defenders, relatives of victims, witnesses and legal counsel dealing with cases of enforced disappearance;

the use by States of counter-terrori st activities as an excuse for breaching their obligations; - and the still widespread impunity for enforced disappearance.

On 21 December 2010, by its resolution 65/209 the UN General Assembly expressed its deep concern about the increase in enforced or involuntary disappearances in various regions of the world, including arrest, detention and abduction, when these are part of or amount to enforced disappearances, and by the growing number of reports concerning harassment, ill-treatment and intimidation of witnesses of disappearances or relatives of persons who have disappeared. By the same resolution the Assembly welcomed the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, and decided to declare 30 August the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, to be observed beginning in 2011.

Dag van de Walvishaai / Whale Shark Day 2025
De walvishaai is een haai, met zijn 12 á 14 meter lengte en een gemiddeld gewicht van 14.500 kilo is het wel de grootste vis ter wereld.
Ze voeden zich voornamelijk met plankton en ondanks hun gigantische grootte zijn de tanden van walvishaaien slechts 6 millimeter lang! De walvishaai zwemt het liefste rond in de tropische oceanen in de buurt van de Malediven, de Filipijnen en Mexico. Walvishaaien zijn normaal gesproken niet gevaarlijk voor mensen. Alleen het zwiepen van zijn staart kan ongelukken veroorzaken. Als je gaat zwemmen met een walvishaai dan doe je dat met een gids die zich aan de regels houdt die opgesteld zijn door het Wereld Natuur Fonds. De walvishaai heeft per slot van rekening niet voor niets de status van “kwetsbaar”.

There has been a spate of disappearances, sinkings and attacks on oil rigs in the North Sea under very mysterious circumstances. Arriving in Scotland with Sarah and Harry, the Doctor soon discovers that an unknown force is controlling the Loch Ness monster and has turned it from a shy, placid creature into a weapon of mass destruction. The mythical beast is being manipulated by a group of Zygons – a shape-shifting race of aliens determined to conquer Earth after their home planet was destroyed. As the Doctor, Sarah, Harry and UNIT confront the deadly threat, they must navigate a world where allies may not be what they seem, and the line between friend and foe is dangerously blurred.
