Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2026
On 8 December 2005, the General Assembly declared that 4 April of each year shall be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
It called for continued efforts by States, with the assistance of the United Nations and relevant organizations, to foster the establishment and development of national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety, health and lives of the civilian population, or an impediment to social and economic development at the national and local levels. Established in 1997, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and in support of peace operations, as well as through the development of standards, policies and norms.
In 2026, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action will be commemorated under the theme “Invest in Peace; Invest in Mine Action.” This theme draws out the foundational importance of lands being cleared from explosive threats and communities living in the absence of fear from these indiscriminate weapons for peace to be able to prosper. Mines, explosive remnants of war, and improvised explosive devices continue to cause death and injury, especially in situations of armed conflict. On average, one person is killed or injured by such explosive device every hour. Many children are among the victims. The use of improvised explosive devices has expanded, terrorizing civilians and threatening humanitarian actors and United Nations missions and personnel. Mine action saves lives, provides security, restores dignity, unlocks land for productive use, and creates the conditions for long-term stability. It transforms hazardous land into safe, productive spaces. It enables humanitarian access, facilitates development, supports stabilization efforts, and lays the groundwork for durable peace. Investing in mine action is therefore not only a technical necessity – it is a strategic investment in peacebuilding, recovery, and sustainable development.

Sit-ins op stations in heel Nederland
Wekelijkse Sit-ins op Stations op donderdag voor Gaza door heel Nederland: neem een pan en lepel mee om luid te zijn, bordjes met je boodschap of beelden, en oordoppen om je gehoor te beschermen.
Sit-in van Rijksambtenaren in Den Haag
Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop.
Je kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen:
1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza.
2. Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht;
3. De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ).
4. Een strategie voor duurzame vrede, met garanties voor de mensenrechten en veiligheid van zowel Palestijnen als Israëliërs.

#ICBD2026 Children’s Book Day / Kinderboekendag / Hans Christian Andersen geboortedag (1805) 2026
International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) is a yearly event sponsored by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), an international non-profit organization, founded in 1967, the day is observed on or around Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, April 2.
Activities include writing competitions, announcements of book awards and events with authors of children’s literature. Each year a different National Section of IBBY has the opportunity to be the international sponsor of ICBD. It decides upon a theme and invites a prominent author from the host country to write a message to the children of the world and a well-known illustrator to design a poster. These materials are used in different ways to promote books and reading. Many IBBY Sections promote ICBD through the media and organize activities in schools and public libraries. Often ICBD is linked to celebrations around children’s books and other special events that may include encounters with authors and illustrators, writing competitions or announcements of book awards.

Inzicht in openbare kwaliteitsinformatie in de medischspecialistische zorg : Nulmeting van de huidige staat van transparantie – publicatie
In het rapport ‘Inzicht in openbare kwaliteitsinformatie in de medischspecialistische zorg : Nulmeting van de huidige staat van transparantie‘ staat een nulmeting Zorginstituut Nederland en Patiëntenfederatie Nederland over de transparantie van kwaliteitsinformatie in de medisch-specialistische zorg.
Uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat er weinig informatie over de kwaliteit van zorg openbaar is voor patiënten. En dat de hoeveelheid openbare kwaliteitsinformatie de afgelopen jaren nauwelijks toeneemt. In het rapport staan de resultaten. Deze meting is uitgevoerd om een stand van zaken te krijgen over de huidige mate van transparantie van kwaliteitsinformatie in de medisch-specialistische zorg in Nederland. Deze meting volgt uit de afspraken van het Aanvullend Zorg- en Welzijnsakkoord (AZWA). Hierin staan afspraken die partijen maken om meer informatie over kwaliteit van zorg transparant te maken. Door de jaren heen zijn meerdere afspraken gemaakt om kwaliteitsinformatie voor patiënten transparant te maken, maar deze afspraken werden ook uitgesteld. Dat roept vragen op: wat is nu eigenlijk de stand van zaken? Zijn de afspraken tussen partijen in het veld en de overheid nagekomen? En zijn hiermee de beloftes aan de patiënt waargemaakt?
