Wereld Hoofd- en halskankerdag / World Head and Neck Cancer Day 2024
Hoofd- en hals kanker (HNSCC) is wereldwijd de belangrijkste oorzaak van overlijden en invaliditeit.
En het bizarre is dat de meeste mensen geholpen hadden kunnen worden wanneer zij eerder naar de huisarts waren gegaan. World Head Neck Cancer day voert campagne om deze vorm van kanker onder de aandacht van de mensen te brengen. Hoofd- en halskanker is relatief zeldzaam. In Nederland krijgen jaarlijks ongeveer 3.000 mensen de diagnose dat ze kanker in het hoofd-halsgebied hebben. Staat gelijk aan ongeveer 5% van het totale aantal mensen die jaarlijks de diagnose kanker krijgen.
In België zie je een soort gelijke cijfers, ook daar gaat het om 5% van alle nieuwe gevallen van kanker. Bij elke ziekte geeft het tijdig herkennen van de klachten grotere overlevingskansen, dat is bij hoofd-halskanker niet anders. Hoe eerder je naar de huisarts gaat, hoe sneller je een doorverwijzing krijgt naar een hoofd-hals oncologisch centrum. Dus ga naar een arts wanneer je langer dan 3 weken last hebt van één van onderstaande klachten:
- een pijnlijke/gevoelige tong
- een niet genezend zweertje
- rode of witte afwijkingen in het mondslijmvlies
- keelpijn
- heesheid
- pijn bij of moeite met slikken
- zwelling in de hals
- verstopping van een neusgat en/of een bloederige afscheiding uit de neus

Let’s face it, System Administrators get no respect 364 days a year. This is the day that all fellow System Administrators across the globe, will be showered with expensive sports cars and large piles of cash in appreciation of their diligent work. But seriously, we are asking for a nice token gift and some public acknowledgement. It’s the least you could do. Consider all the daunting tasks and long hours (weekends too.) Let’s be honest, sometimes we don’t know our System Administrators as well as they know us. Remember this is one day to recognize your System Administrator for their workplace contributions and to promote professional excellence. Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem / Dag voor het Behoud van het Mangrovebos 2024
Mangroves are rare, spectacular and prolific ecosystems on the boundary between land and sea.
These extra ordinary ecosystems contribute to the wellbeing, food security, and protection of coastal communities worldwide. They support a rich biodiversity and provide a valuable nursery habitat for fish and crustaceans. Mangroves also act as a form of natural coastal defense against storm surges, tsunamis, rising sea levels and erosion. Their soils are highly effective carbon sinks, sequestering vast amounts of carbon. Yet mangroves are disappearing three to five times faster than overall global forest losses, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. Current estimates indicate that mangrove coverage has been divided by two since the 1980’s. UNESCO is engaged deeply in supporting the conservation of mangroves, while advancing the sustainable development of their local communities. The inclusion of mangroves in Biosphere Reserves, World Heritage sites and UNESCO Global Geoparks contributes to improving the knowledge, management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems throughout the world. The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2015 and celebrated each year on 26 July, aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.

Evidence of dark oxygen production at the abyssal seafloor – publication
Deep-seafloor organisms consume oxygen, which can be measured by in situ benthic chamber experiments.
The writers of the article “Evidence of dark oxygen production at the abyssal seafloor” report such experiments at the polymetallic nodule-covered abyssal seafloor in the Pacific Ocean in which oxygen increased over two days to more than three times the background concentration, which from ex situ incubations we attribute to the polymetallic nodules. Given high voltage potentials (up to 0.95 V) on nodule surfaces, the writers hypothesize that seawater electrolysis may contribute to this dark oxygen production.

Scientists have transmitted quantum and conventional internet data through the same fiber-optic channel, meaning a future quantum internet could theoretically use existing infrastructure.
Scientists have successfully transmitted quantum data and conventional data through a single optical fiber for the first time. The research demonstrates that quantum data in the form of entangled photons and conventional internet data sent as laser pulses can coexist in the same fiber-optic cable. Most research into building a quantum internet has focused on the need for separate infrastructure or dedicated channels for quantum data to avoid interference from “classical” data. But this new “hybrid” network could pave the way for more efficient implementation of quantum communications by enabling quantum and conventional data to share the same infrastructure. The researchers revealed their findings in a study published July 26 in the journal Science Advances.
