Africa Day 2025
Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organization of African Unity on 25 May 1963, it is celebrated in various countries on the African continent as well as around the world. The organization was replaced by the African Union on 9 July 2002, but the holiday continues to be celebrated on 25 May.
On 25 May 1963, representatives of thirty African nations met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, hosted by Emperor Haile Selassie. By then more than two-thirds of the continent had achieved independence, mostly from imperial European states. At this meeting, the Organization of African Unity was founded, with the initial aim to encourage the decolonization of Angola, Mozambique, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia. The organization pledged to support the work conducted by freedom fighters, and remove military access to colonial nations. A charter was set out which sought to improve the living standards across member states. Selassie exclaimed, “May this convention of union last 1,000 years.” The charter was signed by all attendees on 26 May, with the exception of Morocco. At that meeting, Africa Freedom Day was renamed Africa Liberation Day. In 2002, the OAU was replaced by the African Union. However, the renamed celebration of Africa Day continues to be celebrated on 25 May in respect to the formation of the OAU. Africa Day continues to be celebrated both in Africa and around the world, mostly on 25 May (although in some cases these periods of celebrations can be stretched out over a period of days or weeks). Themes are set for each year’s Africa Day.

Nerd Pride Day, ook wel bekend als Geek Pride Day: een initiatief dat het recht eist voor iedere persoon om een nerd of een geek te zijn en wordt jaarlijks gevierd op 25 mei.

Missing Children’s Day / Dag van de Vermiste Kinderen 2025
Remembering children who have gone missing, and those who have been found.
25 May is widely known as Missing Children’s Day, with the forget-me-not flower as its emblem. In 2001, 25 May was first formally recognized as International Missing Children’s Day (IMCD), thanks to a joint effort on the part of Missing Children Europe and the European Commission (ICMEC). Since 2009, IMCD is been promoting by disseminating a unified global message, to commemorate IMCD, acknowledging the need for a harmonized response to protect vulnerable children.

In het voorjaar staan de spindotterbloem en het zomerklokje prachtig in bloei. Deze bijzondere planten groeien nog maar op een paar plekken bij riviergetijde. De Riviereilanden in de Nieuwe Maas overstromen zo’n twee keer per dag, iets wat bijna nergens meer langs onze rivieren gebeurt. Tussen de scheepsvaart en industrie onder de rook van Rotterdam zijn een paar plekjes bewaard gebleven. In de oude griendbossen, voor de wilgenteelt, zingen zanglijsters en bouwt de bever een burcht. In nieuw gegraven slenken zoekt de watersnip naar eten en groeien jonge vissen op. Het meest bijzondere hier is ook bijna het kleinst: Vroege Vogels vindt hier onverwacht het getijdeslakje. Een minuscuul slakje wat nog maar in enkele gebieden leeft waar de getijdenatuur echt triomfeert.

Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu.
In het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443).
Journalist Thomas Oudman stelt grote vraagtekens bij de import van zogenaamde duurzame soja. Hij noemt het ‘sjoemelsoja’. Deze zondag richten we onze microfoons op de vogelzang op Texel, van de duinen, via het binnenland naar de zee. Op het eiland van Brienenoord in Rotterdam krijgen de leerlingen een buitenles in vogelnamen. En verder: Het geduld van de bloemen door Stefan Brijs, regels tegen roof uit de natuur in Apeldoorn, vogelen met Gen Z en waterplanten. De column is deze week van Jelle Reumer.
