There could be a ninth planet in our Solar System after all and it’s not Pluto; instead, it’s the theoretical Planet X, also called Planet Nine, a wide-orbit planet that would circle the Sun from far beyond Neptune and Pluto.

Planet X has been hypothesized for years, but how such a planet could have appeared in the outer Solar System has long stumped scientists. The study in Nature Astronomy ‘Very-wide-orbit planets from dynamical instabilities during the stellar birth cluster phase’ reveals a novel theory, however. The research suggests that wide-orbit planets (such as Planet X) arise in the early evolution of their planetary systems, when these systems are still inside their stars’ crowded birth clusters. In these tight, chaotic settings, stars and their planets are fighting for space, and sometimes planets are sent flying.

The aim of Emergency Medicine day is to unite the world population and decision makers to think and talk about emergency medicine and emergency medical care.

It is important to build awareness about the need for well developed, well prepared and well organised emergency medical systems everywhere in the world to increase survival and reduce disability after any kind of urgent or emergent medical situation. Where the specialty in emergency medicine is not yet developed, where emergency medical systems are not well structured, where competences are not standardized and certified, where resources for emergency medicine are insufficient, there should be a strong voice to ask and claim for a change, for a better life. The mission is to explain to the people that emergency medical care is better performed with competent professionals; doctors, specialists in emergency medicine, nurses trained in emergency and acute care, paramedics, technicians, support personnel competent and working in organized structures and systems dedicated to emergency medical care. To show to people and governments that this organization makes a difference in terms of morbidity, mortality, and cost-effectiveness. The 27th of May is the day when Emergency Medicine in Europe took its beginning. In London a group of visionary people signed the founding act of the European Society for Emergency Medicine. The aim was to build up a system model to grant to every citizen in Europe a professional, competent and above all timely response to any life, organ or limb threatening acute condition. The 2025 theme, “Proud to Provide Your Emergency Care,” celebrates the dedication of emergency care providers who deliver critical, life-saving services every day—often under immense pressure.

Blokkade Afsluitdijk: ‘Red de Waddenzee, stop nieuw fossiel’

Op 21 juni 2025 blokkeren Extinction Rebellion en Scientist Rebellion de Afsluitdijk uit protest tegen nieuwe gasboringen onder de Waddenzee en de Noordzee, daarbij roepen de rebellen EBN, TNO en de Mijnraad op om deze plannen af te wijzen.

De rebellen van Extinction Rebellion (XR) en wetenschappers van Scientist Rebellion (SR) samen met rebellen van XR Fryslan en XR Groningen de Afsluitdijk blokkeren in een massaprotest tegen nieuwe gasboringen onder de Waddenzee en in de Noordzee. Ze roepen overheidsadviseurs EBN, TNO en de Mijnraad op om negatief te adviseren over alle lopende en aankomende vergunningsaanvragen die het Wad en de leefbaarheid van de aarde bedreigen. De Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) – een samenwerkingsverband tussen Shell en ExxonMobil – wil boren onder de Waddenzee voor een opbrengst van slechts twee maanden Nederlands gasverbruik. Dat kan niet veilig, aldus het Staatstoezicht op de Mijnen. Want wanneer de bodem zakt terwijl de zeespiegel stijgt, valt de Waddenzee niet meer droog en dat kan zomaar de ondergang van dit UNESCO-werelderfgoed tot gevolg hebben. Ook waarschuwen wetenschappers al jaren voor de ecologische gevolgen van gasboringen onder het Wad.

Joint Letter on the European Internal Security Strategy (ProtectEU) – publication

On 26 May 2025, 89 civil society organizations, companies, and cybersecurity experts, including Global Encryption Coalition members, published a joint letter to the European Commission, calling on them to address concerns around the impact that the European Internal Security Strategy (Protect EU) would have on end-to-end encryption.

The Internal Security Strategy’s focus on encryption will harm the use of end-to-end encryption in Europe, leaving all Europeans less safe.

The EU’s “Encryption Roadmap” Makes Everyone Less Safe

Brandbrief : Een oproep om de negatieve impact van schermgebruik en sociale media op kinderen en adolescenten daadkrachtig aan te pakken – publicatie

Een groep van ruim 2000 artsen, wetenschappers en praktijkdeskundigen uit diverse disciplines, steunen de oproep van de ouders van meer dan 30.000 kinderen in Nederland om de negatieve impact van schermgebruik en sociale media op kinderen en adolescenten daadkrachtig aan te pakken.

Ze roepen de Nederlandse Overheid, in het bijzonder de ministers en staatssecretarissen van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport, Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, Justitie en Veiligheid (met name Jeugdbeleid en Media), Jeugd, Preventie en Sport, en Digitalisering en Koninkrijksrelaties op tot dringende actie tegen de groeiende gezondheids- en welzijnscrisis als gevolg van overmatig en leeftijdsongeschikt scherm- en sociale media gebruik bij kinderen en jongeren.

Die re:publica ist eine Konferenz zur digitalen Gesellschaft, speziell Netzkultur, Netzpolitik, Weblogs und weiteren sozialen Medien.

Die Konferenz wird seit 2007 jährlich in Berlin veranstaltet. An drei Tagen werden in Vorträgen und Workshops verschiedene Themenfelder behandelt, von Medien und Kultur über Politik und Technik bis zu Entertainment. Einige Vorträge und Diskussionsrunden werden als Audio- oder Videostream live ins Netz übertragen. Der Name leitet sich vom Wort Republik und dem lateinischen Begriff res publica (wörtlich übersetzt: „öffentliche Sache“) ab. Der Doppelpunkt ist eine Anspielung auf das englischsprachige Antwortkürzel „re:“ in der Betreffzeile einer E-Mail. Veranstalter sind die Betreiber der deutschen Blogs Spreeblick und Netzpolitik.org, die für die Veranstaltung 2011 die republica GmbH gegründet haben. Die Veranstaltungsreihe wird unter anderem durch das Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg und die Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung gefördert.  Das Festival für die digitale Gesellschaft steht dieses Jahr unter dem Motto „Generation XYZ“.
