Eurovisiesongfestival: geen podium voor oorlogsmisdaden – petitie
Het Songfestival gaat om het vieren van vrijheid, geluk en vrede, en het mag geen dekmantel worden voor een overheid die genocide pleegt.
AVROTROS maakte namens Nederland bekend dat het zich terugtrekt uit het Songfestival. Ook Ierland, Slovenië en Spanje dreigen het evenement te boycotten als Israël niet wordt uitgesloten. En meer landen staan op het punt om te volgen! Als er genoeg handtekeningen met de petitie ‘Eurovisiesongfestival: geen podium voor oorlogsmisdaden’ van Avaaz worden verzameld, kunnen aarzelende omroepen als de BBC worden opgeroepen zich aan te sluiten bij AVROTROS. Dan heeft Eurovisie geen andere optie dan Israël uit te sluiten. Waarom? Omdat een land dat in Gaza meer dan 50.000 mensen heeft gedood, vooral vrouwen en kinderen, geen glinsterend podium verdient om zijn imago wit te wassen. Rusland werd al binnen een paar dagen na de inval in Oekraïne uitgesloten van het Songfestival. Maar na twee jaar van bombardementen, massale uithongering en ruim 200 dode journalisten wordt de Israëlische staatsomroep nog altijd verwelkomd alsof er niets aan de hand is. Dat is onaanvaardbaar.

#BannedBooksWeek Week van het Verboden Boek 2025
In sommige landen verdwijnen boeken uit de kast, niet omdat niemand ze leest, maar omdat ze niet meer mógen worden gelezen.
Daarom wordt van 20 t/m 28 september 2025 voor het eerst in Nederland de Week van het Verboden Boek georganiseerd – een campagneweek waarin we samen met bibliotheken en andere partners het vrije woord vieren en lezers uitnodigen om juist deze boeken te lezen.

The Week of Deaf People / Week of the Deaf has been celebrated annually across the world during the last full week of September to recognise that deaf people have our own communities, our own cultures, our own languages, sign languages, which unite them all.
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly has proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf. The resolution A/RES/72/161 establishing the day acknowledges that early access to sign language and services in sign language, including quality education available in sign language, is vital to the growth and development of the deaf individual and critical to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. It recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us” in terms of working with deaf communities. In 2018, it was celebrated together with the official International Day of Sign Languages, declared by the United Nations (UN), for the first time. The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), its national associations, and their affiliates all over the world observe International Week of the Deaf from Monday through Sunday, culminating in International Day of the Deaf on the final Sunday of the week. In order to commemorate International Week of the Deaf, the WFD invites its national associations and their affiliates to center their celebrations on the theme of Human Rights through Sign Languages. With this emphasis, deaf culture and the accomplishments of deaf people are highlighted more and are positively portrayed. This emphasis fosters better deaf people’s rights advocacy activities and strengthens the bonds of solidarity between deaf people and those who support them. 2025 theme: “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights”.

Global Fund Results Report 2025 – publication
Global Fund reports 70 million lives saved – but warns progress is at risk.
New report highlights major progress in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria – but warns that without renewed commitment and investment, decades of hard-won gains could unravel. The Global Fund’s Eighth Replenishment is critical to keep the world on track toward ending these deadly diseases. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund) released its annual Results Report, revealing an extraordinary milestone: 70 million lives saved since the Global Fund’s inception in 2002. In less than a quarter century, the Global Fund partnership – driven by country leadership, affected communities and front-line health workers – has slashed the combined death rate from AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria by 63% and cut the combined incidence rate by 42%. The report demonstrates the high return on investment of the Global Fund partnership, and highlights the continued progress achieved in the fight against the three diseases, with a record number of people on antiretroviral therapy for HIV, a record number of people with TB receiving treatment, and the continued scale-up of malaria prevention efforts.

World Cleanup Day 2025
Op 20 september 2025 is het weer World Cleanup Day.
Tijdens deze wereldwijde opruimactie geven we samen met ruim 211 landen de planeet een grote schoonmaakbeurt. Het doel? Het opruimen van zoveel mogelijk zwerfafval. Doe mee en registreer jouw opruimactie. World Cleanup Day is in 2008 in Estland ontstaan. Daar verenigden 50.000 mensen zich om het hele land in slechts vijf uur op te ruimen. Dit simpele idee is uitgegroeid tot een wereldwijde beweging met miljoenen vrijwilligers. Zwerfafval opruimen is een activiteit geworden die mensen en groepen verbindt. World Cleanup Day wordt georganiseerd door Let’s Do It World (LDIW). In 2024 heeft World Cleanup Day een belangrijke mijlpaal bereikt: het evenement is officieel toegevoegd aan de VN-kalender van Internationale Dagen. Een supermooie erkenning voor de zichtbaarheid, maar ook het bewustzijn van onze missie. 20 september is vanaf nu elk jaar dé dag voor de grootste schoonmaak ter wereld. World Cleanup Day wordt ondersteund door plaatselijke verenigingen, zoals de vzw Junior Chamber International (JCI) in België, de Plastic Soup Foundation en IVN Natuureducatie in Nederland.
