The Celebration of the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) 2025

Recognizing the significance of access to information, the 74th UN General Assembly proclaimed 28 September as the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) at the UN level in October 2019.

The day had been proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2015, following the adoption of the 38 C/Resolution 57 declaring 28 September of every year as International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI). UNESCO and its intergovernmental programs – the International Programme for Development of Communication and the Information for All Programme – provide a platform and frame for all the stakeholders to participate in international discussions on policy and guidelines in the area of access to information.

Overheid, bouw meer betaalbare huurwoningen!

Ondanks de brede steun in Nederland om meer betaalbare woningen te bouwen, wordt het juist steeds moeilijker om een woning te betalen, laat staan om er één te vinden.

Met alle gevolgen van dien: mensen hebben minder geld voor hun boodschappen, staan jaren op wachtlijsten en stellen belangrijke levenskeuzes uit. Met de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen in aantocht willen we politieke partijen oproepen om wonen eindelijk weer betaalbaar te maken. Steun deze oproep door de petitie te tekenen.

#WorldHeartDay / Wereld Hart Dag / Dress Red Day 2025

In 2000, World Heart Day was founded to inform people around the globe that Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the world’s leading cause of death and is the biggest global awareness-raising platform for CVD, celebrated every year on 29 September.

In May 2012, world leaders committed to reducing global mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025. CVD is accountable for nearly half of all NCD deaths making it the world’s number one killer. World Heart Day is, therefore, the perfect platform for the CVD community to unite in the fight against CVD and reduce the global disease burden. Created by the World Heart Federation, World Heart Day informs people around the globe that CVD, including heart disease and stroke, is the world’s leading cause of death claiming 17.5 million lives each year, and highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. It aims to drive action to educate people that by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided. World Heart Day is a global campaign during which individuals, families, communities, and governments around the world participate in activities to take charge of their heart health and that of others. Through this campaign, the World Heart Federation unites people from all countries and backgrounds in the fight against the CVD burden and inspires and drives international action to encourage heart-healthy living across the world.

Petition: ‘I call on all governments and decision makers to put an action plan in place to defeat the world’s biggest killer’. This petition is for all who care about better health, and having access to diagnosis, care, and prevention of disease. CVD is killer number one claiming more than 20 million lives every year. Sign nowand urge leaders to take action on CVD with a bold national plan. Let’s make a productive, global community of healthier hearts that can count on smart investment and responsible policies. Sign the petition, add your voice to the millions saying YES to a healthier future for everyone.

Global Citizen Festival 2025

The Global Citizen Festival is an annual music festival started in 2012 and organized by Global Poverty Project.

It was founded by Ryan Gall and Hugh Evans. Gall said he was inspired by visiting Austin City Limits and seeing the branding on the stage, but wanting to replace the corporate branding with branding from charities. In 2015, the organization announced that Coldplay lead vocalist Chris Martin would serve as the festival’s curator for the next 15 years.

World Rabies Day 2025

World Rabies Day is held every year on September 28, this date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur – the first person to successfully create a vaccine against rabies.

World Rabies Day is coordinated by Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) and it has been commemorated every year on September 28 since 2007. World Rabies Day aims to raise awareness and advocate for rabies elimination globally. It is an event designed to be inclusive, uniting people, organizations, and stakeholders across all sectors against rabies – because together we can eliminate rabies! This year on September 28, we are calling on you, me, and our communities to make a difference now! For the first time in its 19-year history, 2025’s theme does not include the word “rabies”, showing how well-established this movement has become. Whether you are an individual, part of an organization, or a decision-maker, the time to act is today.

Censorship Is So 1984

Banned Books Week is an annual awareness campaign promoted by the American Library Association (ALA) and Amnesty International, that celebrates the freedom to read, draws attention to banned and challenged books, and highlights persecuted individuals.

Held in late September or early October since 1982, the United States campaign “stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them” and the requirement to keep material publicly available so that people can develop their own conclusions and opinions. The international campaign notes individuals “persecuted because of the writings that they produce, circulate or read.” Some of the events that occur during Banned Book Week are The Virtual Read-Out and The First Amendment Film Festival. The theme for Banned Books Week 2025: “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.” Banned Books Week will take place October 5 – 11, 2025. Current efforts to ban books and information held in schools, libraries, archives, and bookstores are a truth close to fiction – namely, the depiction of extreme censorship by an oppressive regime in George Orwell’s cautionary and prescient tale 1984. The Banned Books Week 2025 theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights. ALA recently released the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2024 list and the State of America’s Libraries Report. The majority of book censorship attempts that ALA tracked in 2024 come from organized movements. Pressure groups and government entities that include elected officials, board members, and administrators initiated 72% of demands to censor books in school and public libraries.

The 120 titles most frequently targeted for censorship during 2024 are all identified on partisan book rating sites, which provide tools for activists to demand the censorship of library books.  Additionally, PEN America recorded the highest instances of book censorship in schools and the highest number of unique titles banned during the 2023-2024 school year – more than 4,000 unique titles were removed in over 10,000 instances of book bans. PEN America also tracked the influence of pressure groups, finding that they have undertaken efforts to remove materials in nearly every state. Banned Books Week launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges in libraries, schools, and bookstores. The Banned Books Week Coalition, an international alliance of diverse organizations joined by a commitment to increase awareness of the annual celebration of the freedom to read, appoints an honorary chair and youth honorary chair to lead Banned Books Week. Past honorary chairs include filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Origin, 2024), literacy champion LeVar Burton (Reading Rainbow, 2023), and banned authors George M. Johnson (All Boys Aren’t Blue, 2022) and Jason Reynolds (All American Boys, 2021). The 2025 honorary chairs will be announced in the coming weeks.

Vroege Vogels is een live-radioprogramma, tv-programma en online community van BNNVARA over natuur en milieu.

In het radioprogramma wordt het gesproken woord omlijst door licht klassieke muziek en salonmuziek. Het radioprogramma werd in 1978 voor het eerst uitgezonden door de VARA en is een van de langst lopende en best beluisterde radioprogramma’s van de publieke omroep. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag, vaak rond een thema.

Waar vroeger de Zuiderzeekust te vinden was liggen nu de Veluwerandmeren; vier meren waar het, tussen de pleziervaart door, wemelt van de vogels. Ondanks de ingrijpende verandering van zoute zee naar zoete meren, floreert de natuur. Varend en snorkelend in de regen nemen we een kijkje in het heldere water. Kleurrijke krooneenden snoepen van de kranswieren. In het riet klinkt een grote karekiet, die na een dramatische afname langzaam opkrabbelt. Onder water zien we hoe kleine snoeken hier opgroeien en waterslakjes grazen op waterplanten. En boven water duikt de indrukwekkende zeearend op.
