World Otter Day

World Otter Day takes place on the last Wednesday in May each year. The day was established by IOSF to help draw attention to otters, celebrate them, and raise awareness and support for their conservation globally.

The aim is to put otters on the map, and at the forefront of people’s mind. It focuses on raising awareness about how important otters are and also highlights the threats that they face. There are certain issues faced by otters that some people are largely unaware of, such as the huge trade in these animals for pets and fur. World Otter Day addresses this.

15th Trilateral Governmental Conference on the Protection of the Wadden Sea

The 15th Trilateral Governmental Conference on the Protection of the Wadden Sea marks the handover of the presidency from Denmark to the Netherlands, representing an important step in the shared management of this single World Heritage Site.

The event brings together partners, experts, and decision-makers from across the Wadden Sea region for three days of programme sessions, events, and opportunities for professional exchange. Under the theme “Protection through Recognition,” the conference emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the Outstanding Universal Value of the Wadden Sea and the collective responsibility of the three cooperating countries. A key outcome will be the adoption of a new declaration guiding the future direction and ambitions of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation. The Wadden Sea is the largest unbroken tidal flats system in the world, where natural processes proceed largely undisturbed. It extends along the coasts of Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. For its globally unique geological and ecological values the Wadden Sea is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. Nowhere else in the world is there such a dynamic landscape with a multitude of habitats, shaped by wind and tides. Global biodiversity is reliant on the Wadden Sea. In the framework of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands take on the responsibility of preserving this irreplaceable ecosystem for the benefit of present and future generations.

The aim of Emergency Medicine day is to unite the world population and decision makers to think and talk about emergency medicine and emergency medical care.

It is important to build awareness about the need for well developed, well prepared and well organised emergency medical systems everywhere in the world to increase survival and reduce disability after any kind of urgent or emergent medical situation. Where the specialty in emergency medicine is not yet developed, where emergency medical systems are not well structured, where competences are not standardized and certified, where resources for emergency medicine are insufficient, there should be a strong voice to ask and claim for a change, for a better life. The mission is to explain to the people that emergency medical care is better performed with competent professionals; doctors, specialists in emergency medicine, nurses trained in emergency and acute care, paramedics, technicians, support personnel competent and working in organized structures and systems dedicated to emergency medical care. To show to people and governments that this organization makes a difference in terms of morbidity, mortality, and cost-effectiveness. The 27th of May is the day when Emergency Medicine in Europe took its beginning. In London a group of visionary people signed the founding act of the European Society for Emergency Medicine. The aim was to build up a system model to grant to every citizen in Europe a professional, competent and above all timely response to any life, organ or limb threatening acute condition. The 2025 theme, “Proud to Provide Your Emergency Care,” celebrates the dedication of emergency care providers who deliver critical, life-saving services every day—often under immense pressure.

Heat Action Day op 2 juni 2026 is een initiatief van het Rode Kruis, in Nederland is Klimaatverbond Nederland de officiële partner, op deze dag brengen deze organisaties hun hitte-activiteiten onder de aandacht en stellen ze ‘hete kwesties’ aan de orde.

Hitte is het meest urgente en dodelijkste klimaatrisico van Nederland, hittegolven komen steeds vaker voor en duren langer. Ouderen, jonge kinderen en mensen met een kwetsbare gezondheid lopen hierbij het grootste risico. Hitte is niet alleen een probleem in onze steden – ook in versteende wijken in kleinere gemeenten hebben mensen last van hitte. Meer dan de helft van alle Nederlanders woont in een huis dat te veel dreigt op te warmen in de zomer. Hitte hoeft geen groot probleem te worden. Gelukkig zijn veel hittemaatregelen relatief simpel, en gebeurt er al veel: gemeenten, provincies, woningcorporaties, gezondheidsorganisaties en kennisinstellingen werken hard aan oplossingen. Maar er is meer nodig. Daarom is Heat Action Day jaarlijks dé dag om samen stil te staan bij het belang van de aanpak van hittestress.

Operatie (uitgesteld):
A3 werd na eerder uitstel opnieuw verwacht in het Tergooi ziekenhuis in Hilversum voor wederom een medische ingreep aan het rechteroor. Deze keer ging de operatie, om een gat in het trommelvlies te dichten, alsnog door. In juli 2026 zal worden getest of de actie is geslaagd.

Stop Israëls illegale bezetting!

Over minder dan 24 uur, op 28 april 2026, zou Israël eindelijk consequenties kunnen zien voor het annexeren van de Westelijke Jordaanoever en het afschuwelijke kolonistengeweld tegen Palestijnse gezinnen die daar wonen.

Israël versnelt de feitelijke annexatie van de Westelijke Jordaanoever via een door de staat goedgekeurd plan, en schendt daarmee op grove wijze het internationaal recht. Op 28 april 2026 komen ministers van Buitenlandse zaken bijeen in Brussel om de situatie te bespreken – dit is hét moment om op te roepen tot een verbod op import uit illegale nederzettingen! Meer dan 85 landen hebben zich al uitgesproken, maar woorden zijn niet genoeg. Israël versnelt de feitelijke annexatie van de Westelijke Jordaanoever via een door de staat goedgekeurd plan, en schendt daarmee op grove wijze het internationaal recht. Het geweld neemt snel toe. Kolonisten verdrijven Palestijnse gezinnen, leggen beslag op hun huizen, en in de afgelopen maanden hebben ze honderden olijfbomen ontworteld, Palestijnse dorpen aangevallen, huizen en voertuigen in brand gestoken en minstens zestien Palestijnen gedood. Een man werd verkracht waar zijn gezin bij was, en meerdere vrouwen en meisjes zijn ernstig mishandeld. Dit moet stoppen en het kan anders. Een toekomst waarin Palestijnen veilig op hun eigen land wonen, vrij om te groeien, te bouwen en gelukkig te zijn is nog steeds mogelijk! Laten we ons hard maken voor die toekomst. Negen landen hebben de architecten van de annexatie al sancties opgelegd, nu moeten we doorpakken. Als we nu in actie komen kunnen we een groot aantal landen oproepen om alle import uit illegale nederzettingen op te schorten en brede sancties op te leggen, zodat deze gewelddadige overname te duur wordt voor Israël om voort te zetten.

Als onze oproep groot genoeg is, overhandigt Avaaz deze morgen rechtstreeks aan de ministertop: Het annexatieplan is wereldwijd veroordeeld, ook door de Verenigde Staten. En er komt steeds meer steun voor meer landen om sancties op te leggen aan Israëls extremistische ministers Itamar Ben Gvir en Bezalel Smotrich. Maar woorden alleen zijn niet genoeg om het kabinet van Netanyahu te stoppen. Zonder concrete consequenties zullen ze gewoon doorgaan.
We kunnen meer landen oproepen om alle handel met nederzettingen stil te leggen en sancties opleggen aan iedere ambtenaar die voor annexatie heeft gestemd. Volgens het internationaal recht is het niet alleen illegaal om burgers naar bezet gebied te verplaatsen; het is een oorlogsmisdaad. En deze leiders zijn daarvoor persoonlijk verantwoordelijk. Sancties opleggen aan leden van het kabinet geeft een duidelijk signaal af: schending van het internationaal recht heeft politieke en economische gevolgen. Als landen zoals Spanje en Frankrijk de leiding nemen, kunnen anderen volgen, en zo wordt de druk opgevoerd. Het breedgedragen protest tegen de genocide in Gaza laat zien dat overheden in actie komen als ze grote, aanhoudende druk ervaren van burgers overal ter wereld. Teken nu: Het is makkelijk je moedeloos te voelen in tijden als deze. Maar als mensen zich uitspreken kunnen ze de geschiedenis veranderen. Door vandaag nog de handen ineen te slaan kunnen we helpen een wereldwijde kettingreactie teweeg te brengen die de Israëlische overheid dwingt om deze illegale bezetting te stoppen.

EU Space Days 2026 took place in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 26 and 27 May, bringing the European space community together for the EU’s annual event dedicated to space policy, industry, innovation, and strategic autonomy.

Organised under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, the event signalled Cyprus’s growing role in the European space ecosystem. Participants included representatives from EU institutions, Member States, EU agencies, space organisations, industry, SMEs, start-ups, investors, researchers, and defence and security stakeholders, making the event both a policy forum and a space for business exchange and networking. As a Member State increasingly engaged with the space sector and as holder of the Council Presidency, Cyprus gave the event an institutional framing which reinforced a recurring message across both days: space is a shared European responsibility, with an expanding number of Member States becoming active participants. This was also reflected in the months leading up to the event. In March 2026, Cyprus completed the first activation and operational use of secure satellite communication services delivered through Governmental Satellite Communications (GOVSATCOM), following the launch of the service’s initial operations in January 2026. Space is increasingly central to the EU’s security, resilience, and economic future. Against that backdrop, EU Space Days 2026 brought together senior EU decision-makers, industry leaders, start-ups, and researchers in Nicosia, Cyprus, for two days of high-level discussions on the state and direction of Europe’s space endeavours. Organised under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, the event covered topics ranging from defence and strategic autonomy to workforce development and quantum communications. In this Observer, we take a look at some of the key highlights and forward-looking messages.
