De energiearmoedekloof in Nederland – publicatie

TNO brengt ernst en verschillen in energiearmoede in kaart, in de studie “De energiearmoedekloof in Nederland” ontwikkelt ze een methode om (verschillen in) het niveau van energiearmoede te meten.

De door CBS en TNO ontwikkelde Monitor Energiearmoede meet tot nu toe alleen het aantal energiearme huishoudens (frequentie). In 2023 kampten naar schatting 400 duizend huishoudens met energiearmoede, zo bleek eerder uit de Monitor Energiearmoede van TNO en het CBS. TNO deed in een nieuwe studie voor het eerst onderzoek naar de mate van energiearmoede bij huishoudens. Door de zogenoemde energiearmoedekloof te meten wordt voor het eerst het niveau van energiearmoede in kaart gebracht. De studie ging uit van verschillende energieprijsniveaus (laag, midden en hoog) zonder compensatiemaatregelen. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat bij een midden energieprijs de totale energiearmoedekloof €250 miljoen per jaar bedraagt. Dit is het totale bedrag dat alle energiearme huishouden samen per jaar nodig hebben om boven de energiearmoede drempel uit te komen.

2025 International Virtual Science Symposium

The International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS) is an opportunity for Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) students to showcase their research to the rest of the community.

Projects are judged by prestigious scientists and Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) professionals across dozens of GLOBE nations. Students are eligible for GLOBE badges. Students may submit a project on any topic, but they are encouraged to align their research with the year’s theme, in 2025 “30 Years of GLOBE: Understanding the Past, Present, and Future.” Students from across all 127 member countries take up the challenge of doing their own research using GLOBE Protocols and accessing and analyzing data from the NASA GLOBE Database as part of their IVSS project. The highlighted badge for the 2025 IVSS is the “I am a Data Scientist” badge since data analysis using historical data from the NASA GLOBE Database is a required portion for each IVSS submission in 2025.

Europese Mobiliteitsweek / European #MobilityWeek 2024

Elk jaar vindt van 16-22 september de Europese Mobiliteitsweek plaats.

Deze week is uitgegroeid tot hét moment waarop gemeenten en andere organisaties in heel Europa (en ver daarbuiten) duurzame mobiliteit op de kaart zetten. Het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat nodigt Nederlandse gemeenten en organisaties zich aan te melden voor deelname aan de Europese Mobiliteitsweek. Dat kan op verschillende manieren: hoe lees je hieronder.

Dag voor het Behoud van de Ozonlaag / Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2024

De ozonlaag is een dun laagje gas dat ligt tussen de 15 en 50 kilometer hoogte en als een ring om onze aarde zit met als belangrijkste eigenschap; het beschermt ons tegen de schadelijke straling (ultraviolette straling) die afkomstig is van de zon.

Zonder de ozonlaag is leven op aarde niet mogelijk. Door vervuiling wordt de ozonlaag steeds dunner. Hierdoor lopen mensen meer kans op huidkanker en staar. Om gezamenlijk te proberen het ozongat niet groter te laten worden werd op 22 maart 1985 het Verdrag van Wenen aangenomen dat door 28 landen ondertekend. Op 16 september 1987 heeft dit geleid tot het opstellen van het Montrealprotocol (Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer). Het is geratificeerd door elke lidstaat van de Verenigde Naties (197); de Europese Unie, alle 193 leden van de Verenigde Naties, Vaticaanstad, Cookeilanden en Niue. Het Montrealprotocol laat zien dat mondiaal afspraken maken over het milieubeleid duidelijk zin heeft. We moeten nog wel een tijd wachten voordat de ozonlaag helemaal hersteld is maar vermoedelijk zal tegen 2050 de ozonlaag hersteld zijn tot het niveau van 1960. Plak er nog een 20 tot 30 jaar aan vast en dan moet de ozonlaag toch praktisch hersteld zijn. Ozongat boven Antarctica zal dan ook dicht zijn.

Batman is een fictieve superheld in 1939 bedacht door tekenaar Bob Kane en schrijver Bill Finger.

De stripfiguur verscheen voor het eerst in Detective Comics #27. De vleermuisman is voor een deel geïnspireerd door andere gemaskerde misdaadbestrijders als Zorro en The Shadow. Bob Kane kwam op het idee voor een vleermuisman door een tekening van Leonardo da Vinci van een ornithopter.

Day of Democracy / Dag van de Democratie 2024

The Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world.

Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of and support by the international community, national governing bodies, civil society and individuals, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere. The values of freedom, respect for human rights and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage are essential elements of democracy.

In turn, democracy provides the natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights. These values are embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and further developed in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which enshrines a host of political rights and civil liberties underpinning meaningful democracies. The link between democracy and human rights is captured in article 21(3) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states:

“The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.”

The rights enshrined in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and subsequent human rights instruments covering group rights (e.g.indigenous peoples, minorities, people with disabilities) are equally essential for democracy as they ensure an equitable distribution of wealth, and equality and equity in respect of access to civil and political rights.

2023 Theme: Empowering the next generation. This year’s theme for the International Day of Democracy, “Empowering the next generation,” focuses on young people’s essential role in advancing democracy and ensuring that their voices are included in the decisions that have a profound impact on their world.
