Forests are indispensable: they are central for addressing the interlinked climate, biodiversity, and nature crises, yet they continue to be destroyed at alarming rates – threatening planetary health and the well-being of future generations.

International forest pledges have committed their signatories to halting and reversing global deforestation and forest degradation by 2030. But the world is not on track to meet those 2030 forest goals. On the contrary, the annual assessment report reveals a sobering trajectory of ongoing or increasing global deforestation and degradation in 2023.

Earth Science Week 2024

Since October 1998, the American Geosciences Institute has organized this national and international event to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth.

The 2024 theme “Earth Science Everywhere” highlights the widespread influence of geosciences across STEM disciplines and the humanities. Recognizing these connections allows individuals to appreciate how geoscience relates to their interests, communities, and future pursuits.

Machine learning has long been important for research, including the sorting and analysis of vast amounts of data.

John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton used tools from physics to construct methods that helped lay the foundation for today’s powerful machine learning. Machine learning based on artificial neural networks is currently revolutionising science, engineering and daily life.

Nederland, los onze ereschuld aan Afghaanse oud-medewerkers in! – petitie

Na de val van Kabul op 15 augustus 2021 zijn minstens 15 Defensiebewakers zijn vermoord, velen zijn en worden nog steeds bedreigd en mishandeld en belangenorganisaties krijgen met regelmaat verontrustende signalen van oud-medewerkers.

Ze zitten ondergedoken en wisselen steeds van adres, velen apart van hun gezin. Met een groep Afghanen krijgen we geen contact meer, we vrezen voor hun leven. Tijdens en na de machtsovername door de Taliban in augustus 2021 heeft Nederland tolken en een deel van de andere oud-medewerkers kunnen redden. Over de achterblijvers is al die tijd discussie geweest: welke criteria, met of zonder familieleden, enz. Want de kabinetten Rutte wilden vooral niet te ruimhartig zijn. Eindelijk lag er dan een besluit om een beperkte groep bewakers met hun gezinnen (alleen minderjarige kinderen) naar Nederland te halen. Nu haalt het kabinet Schoof hier zonder enig mededogen een streep doorheen. Het enige argument dat ze geven zijn de kosten en het aantal mensen. Spreek je uit en teken de petitie van DeGoedeZaak aan de minister van Buitenlandse zaken! De Nederlandse overheid moet alsnog haar ereschuld inlossen!

Time for a 4-day work week – petition

🎉 The Japanese government is encouraging companies to introduce a 4 day-work week.

Why is it so important? Countless studies show a 32-hour week for the same pay improved worker well-being, the health of families, gender equality, pollution, employment rates and more. It even boosted productivity and efficiency in the workplace. Japan is known for its very hardworking culture. I mean, they even have a term for literally working oneself to death – karoshi 🤯 The government wants to change that. It has launched a new campaign promoting flexible work hours arrangements, shorter work time, as well as overtime limits. While changing habits can be challenging in such a tough work culture, it could bring many benefits. But first, employers and employees need to open up to this change. In 2022, Panasonic, one of Japan’s largest companies, introduced a four-day workweek option, yet only about 150 out of 63,000 employees decided to participate. If Japan is becoming more serious about a 4-day work week, so should Europe. It’s time to introduce shorter work weeks across the EU. Sign the petition to join this fight! ✊

In heel Nederland klinkt op elke eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 het luchtalarm, in juni en december wordt tevens een NL-Alert testbericht verstuurd naar mobiele (GSM) telefoons.

Het luchtalarmsysteem werd oorspronkelijk tijdens de Koude Oorlog opgezet in het kader van de civiele verdediging. In Nederland werd in 1993 besloten het te vervangen door een moderner systeem. Het principe bleef echter gelijk: sirenes die in een bepaald gebied de bevolking konden waarschuwen bij grote calamiteiten. Ook de maandelijkse testen, die aanvankelijk na de val van de muur in 1989 waren stopgezet, werden hervat. Verspreid over het hele land staan er ongeveer 4278 sirenes, die draadloos en onafhankelijk van elkaar aangezet kunnen worden vanuit de alarmcentrale van de regionale brandweer. De bevolking is van tevoren geïnstrueerd om in het geval dat de sirene afgaat naar binnen te gaan, ramen en deuren te sluiten en radio of televisie aan te zetten. Op de aangewezen calamiteitenzenders kan de overheid verdere aanwijzingen geven, bijvoorbeeld dat een gebied geëvacueerd zal worden.

Extinction Rebellion maakt er met de actie Luchtalarm – dit is een noodgeval! telkens met kleurrijke vlaggen en banners een mooi maar bloedserieus moment van. Met deze actie wil Extinction Rebellion NL aandacht vragen voor de klimaatcrisis en de biodiversiteitscrisis en duidelijk maken dat het al vijf over twaalf is. Sluit je voor een paar minuten aan bij deze actie en laat zien dat je ook vindt dat de overheid in actie moet komen om een leefbare toekomst voor ons en onze kinderen te waarborgen. Kom langs en doe mee! Iedereen is welkom. Neem borden mee, we delen tijdens de actie ook patches uit waarmee we onze boodschap kunnen uitdragen.

‘Het Ballenalarm‘ is een ludieke actie waarmee de Stichting Zaadbalkanker vraagt om extra aandacht voor zaadbalkanker, ook wel teelbalkanker genoemd. Het idee is dat mannen op de eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 – als de maandelijkse alarmsirenes loeien – hun teelballen checken, en dit elke maand opnieuw. Dit moet leiden tot de vroegtijdige ontdekking van zaadbalkanker, de meest voorkomende kanker bij mannen tussen de 15 en 40 jaar.

October 7, is the World Day for Decent Work, during that day trade unions, union federations and other workers associations develop their actions to promote the idea of Decent Work.

Actions vary from street demonstrations to music events or conferences held in many countries. The United Nations Economic and Social Council has given a General Comment that defines “decent work” and requires satisfaction of Article 7 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights: decent work is employment that “respects the fundamental rights of the human person as well as the rights of workers in terms of conditions of work safety and remuneration. … respect for the physical and mental integrity of the worker in the exercise of his/her employment. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), decent work involves opportunities for work that are productive and deliver a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration, freedom for people to express their concerns, organize and participate in the decisions that affect their lives and equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men. The ILO is developing an agenda for the community of work, represented by its tripartite constituents, to mobilize their considerable resources to create those opportunities and to help reduce and eradicate poverty. The ILO Decent Work Agenda is the balanced and integrated programmatic approach to pursue the objectives of full and productive employment and decent work for all at global, regional, national, sectoral and local levels. It has four pillars: standards and rights at work, employment creation and enterprise development, social protection and social dialogue.
The Sustainable Development Goals also proclaims decent work for sustainable economic growth.

World Cotton Day 2024

Cotton is one of the most common fabrics in our wardrobes: it is comfortable, hypoallergenic, breathable and durable.

But cotton represents so much more than just a commodity. This natural fabric is a life-changing product worldwide that sustains 32 million growers (almost half of them women) and benefits over 100 million families across 80 countries in 5 continents. This means that, behind any cotton clothing, following back its trade chain, there is a personal story. It is true that cotton is really important to developed economies, but for least-developed and developing countries, it is a safety-net. Cotton is a major source of livelihoods and incomes for many rural smallholders and laborers, including women, providing employment and income to some of the poorest rural areas in the world. On this official UN World Cotton Day, the United Nations wants to raise visibility of the cotton sector and awareness of the critical role that it plays in economic development, international trade and poverty alleviation. The observance also aims to highlight the importance of sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
