BBC’s The Sky at Night presenter Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock shares her expertise and unique insights into the marvellous world of stars.
Despite the huge advances in space technology in recent decades, much of the universe remains a source of mystery, often provoking more questions than answers. But technology exploring the cosmos continues to progress, from the Hubble telescope first launched in 1990, to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in December 2021. Maggie Aderin-Pocock was one of the British space scientists to work on JWST, and will break down the latest and greatest science to come out of the world’s most powerful space telescope. Now over two years since the first stunningly clear images of the depths of our Universe captured by JWST were released, Maggie will demystify the latest images to be produced by James Webb’s groundbreaking infrared technology.

World Pneumonia Day (12 November) provides an annual forum for the world in the fight against pneumonia, more than 100 organizations representing the interests of children joined forces as the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia to hold the first World Pneumonia Day on 12 November 2009.
Save The Children artist ambassadors Gwyneth Paltrow and Hugh Laurie, Charles MacCormack of Save The Children, Orin Levine of PneumoADIP, Lance Laifer of Hedge Funds vs. Malaria & Pneumonia, the Global Health Council, the GAVI Alliance, and the Sabin Vaccine Institute joined together in a call to action asking people to participate in World Pneumonia Day on 2 November. Pneumonia is a preventable and treatable disease that sickens 155 million children under 5 and kills 1.6 million each year. This makes pneumonia the number 1 killer of children under 5, claiming more lives in this age group than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined.Despite the overwhelming death toll of pneumonia, it rarely receives coverage in the news media. World Pneumonia Day aims to help bring this health crisis to the public’s attention and encourages policy makers and grassroots organizers alike to combat the disease. Affordable treatment and prevention options exist against pneumonia. There are effective vaccines against the two most common bacterial causes of deadly pneumonia, Haemophilus influenzae type B and Streptococcus pneumoniae, and most common viral cause of pneumonia, Orthomyxoviridae. A course of antibiotics which costs less than $1(US) is capable of curing the disease if it is started early enough. The Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia (GAPP) released by the WHO and UNICEF on World Pneumonia Day, 2009, finds that 1 million children’s lives could be saved every year if prevention and treatment interventions for pneumonia were widely introduced in the world’s poorest countries.

Day, Martinmas, Old Halloween of Old Hallowmas Eve genoemd.
Aaron Swartz Day was founded, in 2013, after the death of Aaron Hillel Swartz (November 8, 1986 – January 11, 2013) an American computer programmer, entrepreneur, writer, political organizer, and Internet hacktivist.
Aaron Swartz Day has these combined goals:
To draw attention to what happened to Aaron, in the hopes of stopping it from happening to anyone else.
This includes clarifying that, although Aaron was a hacker, he didn’t hack MIT.
To provide a yearly showcase of many of the projects that were started by Aaron before his death.
Jason Leopold’s Freedom of Information Act Request (FOIA) activism (article from 2013)
As a programmer, Swartz helped develop the web feed format RSS; the technical architecture for Creative Commons, an organization dedicated to creating copyright licenses; the website framework web.py; and Markdown, a lightweight markup language format. Swartz was involved in the development of the social news aggregation website Reddit until he departed from the company in 2007. He is often credited as a martyr and a prodigy, and his work focused on civic awareness and activism. After Reddit was sold to Condé Nast Publications in 2006, Swartz became more involved in activism, helping launch the Progressive Change Campaign Committee in 2009. In 2010, he became a research fellow at Harvard University’s Safra Research Lab on Institutional Corruption, directed by Lawrence Lessig. He founded the online group Demand Progress, known for its campaign against the Stop Online Piracy Act. On January 6, 2011, Swartz was arrested by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) police on state breaking-and-entering charges, after connecting a computer to the MIT network in an unmarked and unlocked closet and setting it to download academic journal articles systematically from JSTOR using a guest user account issued to him by MIT. Federal prosecutors, led by Carmen Ortiz, later charged him with two counts of wire fraud and eleven violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, carrying a cumulative maximum penalty of $1 million in fines, 35years in prison, asset forfeiture, restitution, and supervised release. Swartz declined a plea bargain under which he would have served six months in federal prison. Two days after the prosecution rejected a counter-offer by Swartz, he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment. In 2013, Swartz was inducted posthumously into the Internet Hall of Fame.
