Lichtpuntjes tegen Kanker is een campagne van Kom op tegen Kanker, VRT 1 en Radio2.

Kanker is heftig. Komt steeds onverwacht. Is altijd oneerlijk. Daarom zijn lichtpuntjes zo belangrijk. Lichtpuntjes zijn een krachtig teken van hoop, warmte, steun en troost in moeilijke momenten, voor iedereen die geraakt wordt door kanker. Vanaf 19 februari 2025 roepen VRT 1, Radio2 en Kom op tegen Kanker heel Vlaanderen op om een lampion te kopen en vertellen voor wie het schijnt. Zo draag je een lichtpuntje op aan een dierbare, iemand die wordt gemist of steun kan gebruiken. Zijn of haar naam wordt met de hand geschreven op jouw lampion en toegevoegd aan het Grootste Lichtpunt tegen Kanker, dat wordt ontstoken op vrijdagavond 7 maart tijdens een pakkende liveshow in De Schorre in Boom. Kanker heeft een grote impact op het leven van mensen. En op dat van hun naasten. Met onder andere de opbrengst van Lichtpuntje tegen Kanker kunnen we kanker blijven vermijden, bestrijden en verzachten. Elke dag krijgen 124 mensen in Vlaanderen te horen dat ze kanker hebben. Hoewel behandelingen steeds beter worden, overleeft meer dan 1 op 3 de ziekte niet. Wie kanker wel overleeft, ondervindt vaak nog lang gevolgen. Vandaag leven zo 337.733 mensen in Vlaanderen die tussen 2002 en 2021 een kankerdiagnose kregen.

Join the Gay Sitges Link #XutemContraLHomophobia initiative, which has also joined the Federació Catalana de Futbol  and Generalitat de Catalunya, by means of the Direcció General d’Igualtat and the Secretaria General de l’Esport i l’Activitat Física (SGEAF). The campaign promotes the dissemination of images and posters that promote LGTBIQ+ inclusion in the world of sport in general and especially in Soccer.

Svalbard’s 2024 record summer: An early view of Arctic glaciermeltdown? – publication

Affecting global sea-level rise,mass loss from Arctic glaciers has implications far beyond their geographical location and is relevant for related geosciences, as well as ecological and biosciences and the general public.

Combining in situ observations, remote sensing, and modeling, the scientists quantify the mass loss of all glaciers on Svalbard during the record-warm summer of 2024, that by far exceeds previous levels. Analyzing historic temperature records and projections of future climate, the scientists find that temperaturelevels as in 2024 represent a raresituation for contemporary climate conditions but will be frequently reached in a few decades. The scientists suggest that the summer of 2024 in Svalbard serves as an analogue for the widespread meltdown of Arctic glaciers in a warmer world. The results are published in the article ‘Svalbard’s 2024 record summer: An early view of Arctic glaciermeltdown?‘.

Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed.

The writers of the article ‘Changing life expectancy in European countries 1990–2021‘ aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. They used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy.

Kunstliefhebbers zien massaal af van bezoek en demonstreren bij het Rijks

Op zaterdag 1 maart 2025 vanaf 09:00 demonstreren kunstliefhebbers op de stoep van het Rijksmuseum nadat zij duizenden door hen gereserveerde toegangskaarten hebben geannuleerd uit protest tegen de sponsorrelatie met ING. De bank is met jaarlijks miljarden euro’s financiering in de fossiele industrie medeverantwoordelijk voor klimaatrampen en mensenrechtenschendingen. Uit onderzoek van SOMO, in opdracht van Milieudefensie, blijkt dat die financieringen tien keer hoger uitvallen dan ING beweert.
