Three-quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension, bridging the gap between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace, stability and development.
Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life. This is captured in the seven culture conventions, which provide a solid basis for the promotion of cultural diversity. Cultural diversity is thus an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development. At the same time, acceptance and recognition of cultural diversity – in particular through innovative use of media and Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) – are conducive to dialogue among civilizations and cultures, respect and mutual understanding. In 2001, UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and in December 2002, the UN General Assembly, in its resolution 57/249, declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The day provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to advance the four goals of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions adopted on 20 October 2005:

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Court issued its Advisory Opinion in the case Greenpeace Nordic and Natur og Ungdom (Young Friends of the Earth Norway) brought against the Norwegian State.
The Court agrees with the organisations and confirms that under European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) law, climate assessments for new fossil fuel projects must include not only the emissions produced at the drilling site, but also those resulting from the subsequent combustion of the extracted oil and gas, wherever it takes place. The Norwegian government was therefore wrong to exclude these downstream emissions when approving new drilling.
European Natura 2000 Day relates to the 21st May 1992, when both EU Habitats Directive and LIFE programme were approved.
This Directive together with the Birds Directive (adopted in 1979) became a base of EU Natura 2000 Network of protected areas. Today Natura 2000 consists of more than 27 800 sites across EU land and seas successfully contributing to the preservation of our unique European natural heritage. To celebrate the Natura 2000 network and to honor the efforts of everyone involved in making it a success, the European Commission together with the European Parliament, the Council Presidency and the Committee of the Regions declared 21st May as European Natura 2000 Day.

Het KinderBeestFeest is een feest voor kinderen met een beperking of zorgbehoefte in Noord-Holland, Flevoland en Leiden.
Samen met hun ouders, broertjes en zusjes worden zij door ziekenhuizen en instellingen uitgenodigd voor een exclusieve avondopening in ARTIS Amsterdam. De gasten worden van de regio naar en door Amsterdam vervoerd in diverse hulpverlenersvoertuigen met ingeschakelde sirenes en zwaailichten. Tijdens het KinderBeestFeest staat een grote groep enthousiaste vrijwilligers klaar om de gasten een kosteloze, zorgeloze en vooral onvergetelijke avond te bezorgen. In 2025 wordt er weer een KinderBeestFeest georganiseerd, maar wel al in mei, namelijk op vrijdag 23 mei. Dat is iets eerder dan normaal, omdat vanaf juni veel politie en andere hulpdiensten druk zijn met grote en uitdagende evenementen als Sail Amsterdam en de NAVO-top. Om het KinderBeestFeest succesvol en veilig te kunnen volbrengen, is de steun van politie en hulpdiensten nodig.

The Forest Pulse draws on the most recent data and analysis to reveal the latest trends in global forest loss and deforestation.
The Forest Pulse is updated annually using annual tree cover loss data, updates are released each year and cover the previous year’s trends. The tropics lost a record-shattering 6.7 million hectares of primary rainforest in 2024, an area nearly the size of Panama. Driven largely by massive fires, that’s more than any other year in at least the last two decades. According to new data from the University of Maryland’s GLAD lab and available on WRI’s Global Forest Watch platform, tropical primary forest disappeared at a rate of 18 football (soccer) fields per minute in 2024 — nearly double that of 2023. These are some of the most important forest ecosystems, critical for livelihoods, carbon storage, water provision, biodiversity and more. Their loss in 2024 alone caused 3.1 gigatonnes (Gt) of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to slightly more than the annual CO2 emissions from India’s fossil fuel use.

De VN heeft gewaarschuwd dat 14.000 kinderen in Gaza kunnen verhongeren als Israël geen voldoende voedselhulp toestaat.
De situatie is zo ernstig dat het Verenigd Koninkrijk handelsgesprekken met Israël heeft gestaakt; de EU herziet het handelsakkoord met Israël; en Spanje zet stappen om wapenleveringen te stoppen. Als we de druk hoog genoeg opvoeren en duidelijk van ons laten horen, kunnen we Frankrijk, Canada en het Verenigd Koninkrijk zover krijgen dat ze sancties invoeren en Israël dwingen om de grens te openen. Maar dan moeten we echt vanuit alle hoeken van de wereld van ons laten horen!

World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations, setting the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications.
The original aim of the Metre Convention – the world-wide uniformity of measurement – remains as important today as it was in 1875. The SI is now based on a set of definitions each linked to the laws of physics and have the advantage of being able to embrace further improvements in measurement science and technology to meet the needs of future users for many years to come. Indeed more widely metrology, the science of measurement, plays a central role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, in improving the quality of life and in protecting the global environment. In 2025, the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention – a milestone that underscores a century and a half of international collaboration in measurement science – is celebrated. The recognition of World Metrology Day as a UNESCO International Day represents an extraordinary opportunity to promote the pivotal role of metrology in building a sustainable future
