Elke eerste dinsdag van de maand herdenkt het collectief Artsen voor Gaza de zorgverleners die in de Gazastrook zijn gedood door Israëlische aanvallen, sinds de invasie in het gebied begon.

Inmiddels zijn er in Gaza ruim 1400 zorgverleners gedood, volgens de Britse hulporganisatie Medical Aid for Palestinians. De verhalen van omgekomen zorgverleners illustreren hoe zwaar de medische zorg in Gaza onder druk staat.

World Clubfoot Day / Wereld Klompvoet Dag 2025

Clubfoot, or talipes equinovarus, is a treatable birth defect where one or both feet are rotated inward and downward that affects approximately 150,000-200,000 children each year.

The affected foot and leg may be smaller in size compared to the other. Approximately 50% of cases of clubfoot affect both feet. Most of the time, it is not associated with other problems. Without treatment, the foot remains deformed, and people walk on the sides of their feet. This may lead to pain and difficulty walking. The exact cause is usually not identified. Both genetic and environmental factors are believed to be involved. If one identical twin is affected, there is a 33% chance the other one will be as well. The underlying mechanism involves disruption of the muscles or connective tissue of the lower leg, leading to joint contracture. Other abnormalities are associated 20% of the time, with the most common being distal arthrogryposis and myelomeningocele. The diagnosis may be made at birth by examination or before birth during an ultrasound exam.

Initial treatment is most often with the Ponseti method. This involves moving the foot into an improved position followed by casting, which is repeated at weekly intervals. Once the inward bending is improved, the Achilles tendon is often cut, and braces are worn until the age of four. Initially, the brace is worn nearly continuously and then just at night. In about 20% of cases, further surgery is required. Treatment can be carried out by a range of healthcare providers and can generally be achieved in the developing world with few resources. Clubfoot occurs in 1 to 4 of every 1,000 live births, making it one of the most common birth defects affecting the legs. About 80% of cases occur in developing countries where there is limited access to care. Clubfoot is more common in firstborn children and males. It is more common among Māori people, and less common among Chinese people.

Mabo Day 2025

Australia celebrates Mabo Day on June 03, 2023, which is so far an official holiday in Torres Shire.

Mabo Day commemorates a historic decision by the High Court of Australia in 1992 by which the assumption that Australia had been a terra nullus at the time when the European settlers came, was overturned. It was that assumption, a legal fiction that allowed the settlers to take away the land from the Aboriginals because a terra nullus is land that does not belong to anyone. Mabo Day got its name from Eddie Koiki Mabo, a man from Torres Strait Island who arose a campaign for Indigenous land rights. It is due to him and his campaign that Australian landmark law got changed to the benefit of Australian Indigenous people.

Extinction Rebellion blokkeert A12 op 25 juni 2025 tijdens NAVO-top

Voor Extinction Rebellion NL is de NAVO-top 2025 in Den Haag hét moment om verandering te eisen: stop de genocide, stop racisme en facisme, stop fossiele vernietiging.

Tijdens de NAVO-top, op woensdag 25 juni 2025 om 12:00, blokkeren Extinction Rebellion en Extinction Rebellion Justice Now de A12 in Den Haag. Vanwege de NAVO-top gaat het dit keer om een A12-blokkade met eisen die daar betrekking op hebben: stop de genocide, stop racisme en facisme, stop klimaatontwrichting. Woordvoerder Rozemarijn van ’t Einde: “Terwijl regeringsleiders steeds grotere wapenbudgetten binnenslepen, pleegt Israël genocide op de Palestijnen, zitten we opgescheept met racistisch en fascistisch beleid en woekert de klimaatcrisis voort. De NAVO-top is het uitgelezen moment om grote veranderingen te eisen. Daarom demonstreren wij op de A12, ‘within sight and sound’ van de Tweede Kamer en de VNO-NCW, die sterk voor defensie lobbyt. Nederland moet rechtvaardige keuzes maken.” De eisen van Extinction Rebellion en Extinction Rebellion Justice Now zijn drievoudig:

  1. Stop de genocide die Israël op de Palestijnen pleegt. In lijn met het genocideverdrag eisen Extinction Rebellion en Extinction Rebellion Justice Now een direct einde aan alle wapenleveranties aan Israël en de instelling van harde sancties. 
  2. Stop fascisme en racisme. Stop dit extreemrechtse beleid. Stop de verspreiding van desinformatie door politici.
  3. Stop de fossiele vernietiging. Maak per direct een einde aan fossiele subsidies en fossiele financiering, en verbied nieuwe fossiele projecten.

#BeatTheHeat Heat Action Day 2025

Heat Action Day on 2 June is a annual global day for raising awareness of heat risks and sharing simple ways to Beat The Heat.

Heat waves are deadly. Every year, they claim the lives of infants, older people, and people with chronic health conditions around the world. People living in cities and towns tend to be the hardest hit because urban areas are generally hotter than the surrounding countryside. Due to climate change, heat waves are on the rise. They are getting both hotter and longer. The report ‘Climate change added average of 26 days of extreme heat over last year‘ co-developed for Heat Action Day 2024 by Climate Central, World Weather Attribution, and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre details how climate change has driven extreme heat in the last 12 months. But they don’t need to lead to tragedy. There are simple actions we can all take to protect ourselves, our neighbours, our family members and friends. These include drinking water, resting in the shade, and avoiding outdoor activity in the hottest part of the day. The theme of Heat Action Day 2025 is “how to recognize heat exhaustion and heat stroke”.  To ensure everyone knows how to prevent and respond to heat stroke, we invite you to creatively engage your local community.

Waarschuwingsstelsel sirene en NL-alert test / #Luchtalarm – dit is een noodgeval! / #Ballenalarm

In heel Nederland klinkt op elke eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 het luchtalarm van het waarschuwingsstelsel of waarschuwings- en alarmeringssysteem (WAS), behalve op feestdagen, Nationale Dodenherdenking of bij andere speciale gebeurtenissen.

De test duurt 1 minuut en 26 seconden. In juni en december wordt tevens een NL-Alert testbericht verstuurd naar mobiele (GSM) telefoons. Het WAS is een netwerk van 4278 sirenes in Nederland die draadloos en onafhankelijk van elkaar aangezet kunnen worden vanuit de alarmcentrale van de regionale brandweer. De sirenes worden gebruikt om te waarschuwen via een luchtalarm voor (dreigend) gevaar, met name indien er gevaarlijke stoffen in de lucht aanwezig (kunnen) zijn. Het systeem is ontwikkeld door Siemens, en gebruikt elektronische sirenes op basis van de Federal Signal Modulator 2008 en 1004. Het waarschuwingsstelsel is eigendom van het Ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid, en is op 3 juni 1998 in gebruik genomen. De bevolking is van tevoren geïnstrueerd om in het geval dat de sirene afgaat naar binnen te gaan, ramen en deuren te sluiten en radio of televisie aan te zetten. Op de aangewezen calamiteitenzenders kan de overheid verdere aanwijzingen geven, bijvoorbeeld dat een gebied geëvacueerd zal worden.

Extinction Rebellion maakt er met de actie Luchtalarm – dit is een noodgeval! telkens met kleurrijke vlaggen en banners een mooi maar bloedserieus moment van. Met deze actie wil Extinction Rebellion NL aandacht vragen voor de klimaatcrisis en de biodiversiteitscrisis en duidelijk maken dat het al vijf over twaalf is. Sluit je voor een paar minuten aan bij deze actie en laat zien dat je ook vindt dat de overheid in actie moet komen om een leefbare toekomst voor ons en onze kinderen te waarborgen. Kom langs en doe mee! Iedereen is welkom. Neem borden mee, we delen tijdens de actie ook patches uit waarmee we onze boodschap kunnen uitdragen.

‘Het Ballenalarm‘ is een ludieke actie waarmee de Stichting Zaadbalkanker vraagt om extra aandacht voor zaadbalkanker, ook wel teelbalkanker genoemd. Het idee is dat mannen op de eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 – als de maandelijkse alarmsirenes loeien – hun teelballen checken, en dit elke maand opnieuw. Dit moet leiden tot de vroegtijdige ontdekking van zaadbalkanker, de meest voorkomende kanker bij mannen tussen de 15 en 40 jaar.
