Free Software Foundation (FSF) turns forty

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) turns forty on October 4, 2025 and will end its thirties on a high note, FSF wishes it was celebrating the achievement of software freedom for all computer users, but we’re not there yet.

Until the mission becomes reality and FSF can retire, instead, it is celebrating forty years of activism, and all that FSF has achieved. Since the founding in 1985, FSF laid out many stepping stones on the road to software freedom, and is eager to continue building the road ahead. We will celebrate our fortieth in the spirit of bringing the international free software community together, discussing what we can do next to make the world freer, and celebrating how far we’ve come. We’re aiming for a libre planet! Sounds familiar? Instead of hosting one LibrePlanet conference in 2025, we’re planning a jam-packed anniversary year, filled with several new and exciting activities! We’ll begin the anniversary year with an unprecedented memorabilia auction, starting as a silent auction on March 17, and culminating in a virtual live auction on March 23. By moving out of the FSF office, we got to sort through all the fun and historically important memorabilia and selected the best ones. This is your chance to get your very own personal souvenir of the FSF, from original GNU art to a famous katana and the very same VT220 that was standing on the FSF’s front desk, and which people used to display ASCII art or to play free software games.

Let’s claim the month of May as libre planet (or libre local) month! We’re inviting free software supporters like you anywhere in the world, to organize an in-person community meetup in your area to bring people together. We’re setting up a small fund for these local gatherings, can send stickers, flyers, ideas and tips, and you can invite an FSF staff member to give a talk or workshop during your event and of course, we’ll help promote it. Need help picking a date? Consider the first weekend of the month, when LibrePlanet 2024: Cultivating Community was held. Then, on the actual birthday of the FSF on October 4, 2025, there will be a big celebration in Boston, MA, and the entire free software community is invited. We’re also planning on having the associate member meeting then. These are just some of the big ticket items we have worked out, but there is more! Keep an eye out on the FSF’s pages, we’ll be posting exact information on everything upcoming. In the meantime, naturally, there are a few ways you can get involved in the spirit of LibrePlanet and join us in celebrating forty years of advocating for software freedom.

Firefighters’ Day / Dag van de Brandweer 2025

International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed each year on 4th May.

On this date you are invited to remember the past firefighters who have died while serving our community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all. At the same time, we can show our support and appreciation to the firefighters world wide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year. By proudly wearing and displaying blue and red ribbons pinned together or by participating in a memorial or recognition event, we can show our gratitude to firefighters everywhere. The IFFD ribbons are linked to colours symbolic of the main elements firefighters work with – red for fire and blue for water. These colours also are internationally recognised as representing emergency service. Firefighters dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property. Sometimes that dedication is in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, in others it is many selfless years working in the industry. In all cases it risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life. International Firefighters’ Day is a time where the world’s community can recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions.

#MayThe4thBeWithYou Star Wars Day 2025

Star Wars Day is an informal commemorative day observed annually on May 4 to celebrate George Lucas‘ Star Wars media franchise.

Observance of the day spread quickly through media and grassroots celebrations since the franchise began in 1977. The date originated from the pun “May the Fourth be with you”, a variant of the popular Star Wars catchphrase “May the Force be with you“. Even though the holiday was not created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans across the world have chosen to celebrate the holiday. It has since been embraced by Lucasfilm and parent company Disney as an annual celebration of Star Wars.

Permaculture Day / Permacultuur Dag 2025

Permaculture is an approach to land management and philosophy that adopts arrangements observed in flourishing natural ecosystems.

It includes a set of design principles derived using whole systems thinking and uses these principles in fields such as regenerative agriculturerewilding, and community resilience. Permaculture originally came from “permanent agriculture”, but was later adjusted to mean “permanent culture”, incorporating social aspects as inspired by Masanobu Fukuoka‘s natural farming. The term was coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in 1978, who formulated the concept in opposition to Western industrialized methods and in congruence with Indigenous or traditional knowledge.

Permaculture has many branches including ecological designecological engineeringregenerative designenvironmental design, and construction. It also includes integrated water resources management that develops sustainable architecture, and regenerative and self-maintained habitat and agricultural systems modeled from natural ecosystems. Permaculture has been implemented and gained widespread visibility throughout the world as an agricultural and architectural design system and as a guiding life principle or philosophy. Much of its success has been attributed to the role of Indigenous knowledge and traditions, in which the practice itself is rooted. In turn, the rise of permaculture has revalidated Indigenous knowledge in circles where it was previously devalued.

Wings for Life World Run 2025

Tijdens de Wings for Life World Run starten alle deelnemers wereldwijd op hetzelfde moment. De Wings for Life World Run is anders dan anders.

#WildKoalaDay 2025

A day to celebrate wild koalas and protect their habitats.

Wild Koala Day is not new – it was started in 2016 by a network of independent koala conservation and rehabilitation groups all over Australia.  Every year since then, Wild Koala Day has been celebrated all over Australia and the world.  Politicians, government departments, celebrities, sports stars and universities post about it.  This year, at this important election, koalas are ready to stand as a symbol for all wildlife: Don’t forget us, and don’t take us for granted. This is our chance to put koalas at the top of everyone’s mind.  Whichever government is elected on Wild Koala Day, they need to know that protecting koalas (and all biodiversity) is important to Australians.
