World Futures Day 2025

World Futures Day

In November 2021, the UNESCO General Conference unanimously adopted 2 December as “World Futures Day” (WFD).

Over the years, key milestones recognizing the importance of anticipatory decision-making have been met, such as the Secretary General’s Our Common Agenda, the adoption of the Pact for the Future along with the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations. 2025 World Futures Day will highlight UNESCO’s intersectoral and multidisciplinary approach to addressing today’s major challenges  through futures thinking and foresight and will illustrate the benefits of the practical application of foresight in policy-making when navigating in an era of volatility. It will also leverage the interdisciplinary network of over 1100 UNESCO University Chairs, including 35 UNESCO Chairs in Futures Studies across the world as antennas who are identifying and exploring issues that are emerging and on the horizon in their diverse fields of expertise. World Futures Day will also be the occasion to announce UNESCO’s Global Anticipatory Policy Coalition, led by UNESCO’s MOST Programme.  Serving as a global platform, the Coalition will foster knowledge exchange and peer learning by convening government officials and foresight experts experienced in applying foresight to share lessons and best practices to promote foresight and anticipation capabilities across Member States and advance forward-looking, equity-driven policy solutions for social transformation. The Coalition will operate in an interdisciplinary manner, engaging across sectors to ensure that foresight and anticipation is mainstreamed into policy development and implementation.

UNCCD 17th session of the Conference of the Parties

UNCCD COP17

The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be hosted by Mongolia in its capital city, Ulaanbaatar, from 17 to 28 August 2026.

This landmark global event will bring together delegates from 197 Parties, heads of state, ministers, representatives from international organizations, scientific communities, civil society, and the private sector to forge solutions to the interconnected challenges of desertification, land degradation and drought. Mongolia, with a vast territory of 1.56 million square kilometers, is experiencing land degradation across approximately 76.9 per cent of its land. Recognizing the critical role of land management in addressing the triple environmental crisis, the country has become a key voice in global efforts to combat desertification and enhance land resilience. Mongolia’s ambitious development agendas—particularly its interconnected national movements on environment and agriculture—position the country as a strategic host for COP17 of the UNCCD. COP17 will be convened in alignment with the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026), offering a crucial global opportunity to highlight sustainable rangeland management and the needs of more than one billion people who directly depend on these vital ecosystems for their livelihoods. During the two-week conference, participants will engage in a high-level segment that includes ministerial dialogues, along with multi-stakeholder forums and thematic discussions on science–policy integration, innovation, solutions, technology, and financing. The event is expected to foster impactful collaboration and action across sectors, advancing the goals of sustainable land management, ecosystem and land restoration, and the implementation of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets. Mongolia’s strong development and environmental agenda — including the national ‘Billions of Trees’ movement, the ‘White Gold’ community-based rural development initiative, and the ‘Food Revolution’ agri-soil initiative — positions the country as a regional and global model of action. Hosting COP17 will provide a historic opportunity to elevate international cooperation on land, climate, and biodiversity to a new level. This pivotal conference will mark a significant step forward in uniting the world around solutions to land degradation and climate challenges, solidifying Mongolia’s contribution to building a sustainable and resilient future for all.

Amsterdam is in 2040 (bijna) nicotinevrij.

Tunable Einstein-Bohr Recoiling-Slit Gedankenexperiment at the Quantum Limit – publication

The double-slit experiment demonstrates the quantum nature of reality
The double-slit experiment demonstrates the quantum nature of reality

A groundbreaking experiment recreates Einstein’s 1927 thought challenge, confirming fundamental quantum principle.

In the study ‘Tunable Einstein-Bohr Recoiling-Slit Gedankenexperiment at the Quantum Limit‘ that brings a definitive close to one of the most famous debates in modern physics, a team of Chinese scientists has experimentally validated Niels Bohr’s core quantum principle, demonstrating that a particle’s path and its wave-like behavior are fundamentally mutually exclusive – a notion Albert Einstein famously resisted. The research, led by Professor Pan Jianwei, a pioneering quantum physicist often referred to as China’s “father of quantum,” and his team at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), successfully recreated and executed a thought experiment proposed by Einstein nearly a century ago. Their findings provide strong evidence that Bohr’s interpretation of quantum mechanics accurately describes the nature of reality at the subatomic level. The dispute dates back to the 1927 Solvay Conference in Brussels, where the foundations of quantum mechanics were being forged. Einstein, deeply skeptical of the theory’s probabilistic and seemingly incomplete nature, challenged Bohr’s concept of “complementarity.” Bohr argued that quantum objects possess complementary properties, such as being a particle (with a definite path) and a wave (producing an interference pattern), but that these properties cannot be observed simultaneously. The very act of measurement, Bohr claimed, forces the object into one state or the other. Einstein devised a clever thought experiment, a modification of the classic double-slit experiment, aiming to prove that a sufficiently precise measurement could, in theory, reveal both the particle’s trajectory and its wave interference pattern, thereby contradicting Bohr’s principle.

For decades, Einstein’s challenge remained a theoretical puzzle. The USTC team has now turned it into a physical reality. They constructed an advanced apparatus of extreme sensitivity, capable of detecting the minuscule momentum transfer of a single photon. By meticulously carrying out the experiment, the researchers demonstrated that any attempt to determine which path a particle takes through the apparatus inevitably disturbs the system, destroying the delicate wave interference pattern. Conversely, observing the clear interference pattern necessitates abandoning all information about the individual particle’s path. “The results are unequivocal,” the research indicates. “They confirm Bohr’s original assertion that these dual properties are complementary and cannot be observed concurrently.” This finding underscores a fundamental limit to measurement and observation inherent in the quantum world – a limit Bohr embraced but Einstein found deeply unsatisfying, prompting his famous remark, “God does not play dice with the universe.” This experimental validation is seen as a significant milestone. It conclusively settles the theoretical disagreement in favor of Bohr’s Copenhagen interpretation, confirming that the paradoxical behavior of quantum particles is not due to experimental shortcomings but is a core feature of reality itself. The work not only honors a century of philosophical and scientific inquiry but also demonstrates the advanced capabilities of China’s research teams in pushing the boundaries of fundamental physics. By answering a question posed by Einstein himself, Professor Pan’s team has provided a crucial empirical cornerstone for our understanding of the quantum realm.
