The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030, with a vision of "the science we need for the ocean we want". In March 2022, at the resumed fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2), a historic resolution was adopted to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. In a joint appeal, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spoljaric, are calling on political leaders to urgently establish new international rules on autonomous weapon systems, to protect humanity. In 2025, the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, celebrating eight decades of promoting peace, human rights, social progress, and sustainable development worldwide; the theme of the celebration 'Building Our Future Together' underscores the Organization’s evolution, its continued relevance, and its mission to address today’s global challenges. The Second International Decade for People of African Descent is a global effort to advance human rights, equality and opportunity for people of African descent around the world. The General Assembly meets annually in a regular session that opens on the third Tuesday of September, and runs until the following September. Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is a United Nations-sanctioned designated awareness day observed annually on 29 September with the goal to raise awareness of the importance of food loss and waste, this day is co-convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), whereas, the day's events are jointly led by these two organizations. Recognizing the significance of access to information, the 74th UN General Assembly proclaimed 28 September as the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) at the UN level in October 2019. |
