SUMMARY:#OceanDecade UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) is a United Nations Decade that runs from 2021 to 2030\, with a vision of “the science we need for the ocean we want”. \nUNDOS offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study\, conserve\, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. The Decade will boost scientific research in this area. Environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) research in relationship to oceans tackles fundamental questions of “who gets what?” (justice and allocation)\, “who gets to decide?” (democracy and power)\, “how are current systems maintained?” (architecture and agency)\, and “how do these systems change?” (in the present: agency\, adaptiveness and reflexivity; and in the future: anticipation and imagination). DESCRIPTION:In September 2020\, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”\, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030\, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. \nWHO and the UN regional commissions\, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration\, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action\, which was released in October 2021. The Global Plan aligns with the Stockholm Declaration\, by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to road safety\, and calling on continued improvements in the design of roads and vehicles; enhancement of laws and law enforcement; and provision of timely\, life-saving emergency care for the injured. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking\, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport. Progress made during the previous Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 has laid the foundation for accelerated action in the years ahead. Among achievements are inclusion of road safety on the global health and development agenda\, broad dissemination of scientific guidance on what works\, strengthening of partnerships and networks\, and mobilization of resources. DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on 2 October\, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. This day is referred to in India as Gandhi Jayanti. \nIn January 2004\, Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi had taken a proposal for an International Day of Non-Violence from a Hindi teacher in Paris teaching international students to the World Social Forum in Mumbai. The idea gradually attracted the interest of some leaders of India’s Congress Party (“Ahimsa Finds Teen Voice”\, The Telegraph\, Calcutta) until a Satyagraha Conference resolution in New Delhi in January 2007\, initiated by Indian National Congress President and Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi and Archbishop Desmond Tutu\, called upon the United Nations to adopt the idea. \nOn 15 June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence. The resolution A/RES/61/271 by the General Assembly asks all members of the UN system to commemorate 2 October in “an appropriate manner and disseminate the message of non-violence\, including through education and public awareness.” \nThe United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) in New York City prepared a special cachet to commemorate this event\, following a request from the Indian Ambassador at the Permanent Mission of India to the UN. The boxed pictorial cachet design was prepared by the UNPA and was limited to cancellation at UNPA’s NY location (not Geneva and Vienna). The UNPA has indicated that all outgoing UNPA mail between 2 and 31 October carried the cachet. DESCRIPTION:By resolution 54/68 of 6 December 1999\, the General Assembly proclaimed World Space Week\, to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition. \nWorld Space Week is the largest annual space event in the world. the weeks helps build up the workforce of tomorrow by inspiring students; demonstrates visible public support for the space programme; educates the public about space activities; and fosters international cooperation in space outreach and education. Each year a theme is selected by the World Space Week Association Board of Directors in close coordination with the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs. The theme provides broad guidance to World Space Week participants on the content of their programmes. The theme is selected to increase the impact of World Space Week on all humanity further\, by using a uniform theme globally. On 4 October 1957\, the launch into outer space of the first human-made Earth satellite\, Sputnik 1\, opened the way for space exploration. A decade later\, on 10 October 1967\, the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space\, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies entered into force. Space science and technology and their applications are increasingly being used to support a wide range of United Nations activities. At least 25 United Nations entities and the World Bank Group routinely use space applications. \nThey make important and sometimes essential contributions to the work of the United Nations\, including in the implementation of recommendations of major world conferences and those of the Third United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE III)\, as well as support towards sustainable development. As a consequence\, coordination\, cooperation and synergy are essential for those activities to be effectively carried out by the United Nations system. The annual sessions of the Inter-Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities are the main means of achieving that synergy. The effectiveness of the Meeting has been further enhanced by the holding\, since 2004\, of an open informal session immediately after the end of the Meeting\, as a means of engaging Member States\, in a direct and informal setting\, in important space-related developments in the United Nations system. The agenda of the Inter-Agency Meeting is reviewed at each session and adapted to current operational needs. \nFor World Space Week 2025\, the chosen theme is “Living in Space.” This theme explores humanity’s journey toward making space a habitat\, emphasizing the innovative technologies\, challenges\, and collaborative efforts that make this vision a reality. Event organizers worldwide are encouraged to integrate the theme “Living in Space” into their World Space Week events. Geological diversity refers to the natural portion of the planet that is not alive\, both at the surface and in the planet’s interior. By geodiversity\, we mean the Earth’s minerals\, rocks\, fossils\, soils\, sediments\, landforms\, topography and hydrological features such as rivers and lakes. The term ‘geodiversity’ also spans the processes that create and modify these features. DESCRIPTION:Disarmament Week seeks to promote awareness and better understanding of disarmament issues and their cross-cutting importance. \nStarting on 24 October\, the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations\, the week-long annual observance was first called for in the Final Document of the General Assembly’s 1978 special session on disarmament (resolution S-10/2). In 1995\, the General Assembly invited governments\, as well as NGOs\, to continue taking an active part in Disarmament Week (resolution 50/72 B\, 12 December 1995) in order to promote a better understanding among the public of disarmament issues. Throughout history\, countries have pursued disarmament to build a safer\, more secure world and to protect people from harm. Since the foundation of the United Nations\, disarmament and arms control have played a critical role in preventing and ending crises and armed conflict. Heightened tensions and dangers are better resolved through serious political dialogue and negotiation—not by more arms. Weapons of mass destruction\, in particular nuclear weapons\, continue to be of primary concern\, owing to their destructive power and the threat that they pose to humanity. The excessive accumulation and illicit trade in conventional weapons jeopardize international peace and security and sustainable development\, while the use of heavy conventional weapons in populated areas is seriously endangering civilians. \nNew and emerging weapon technologies\, such as autonomous weapons\, imperil global security and have received increased attention from the international community in recent years. Measures for disarmament are pursued for many reasons\, including to maintain international peace and security\, uphold the principles of humanity\, protect civilians\, promote sustainable development\, foster confidence and trust among States\, and prevent and end armed conflict. DESCRIPTION:In 1972\, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly established World Development Information Day to draw the attention of the world to development problems and the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them (resolution 3038(XXVII)). \nThe Assembly decided that the date for the Day should coincide with United Nations Day\, 24 October\, which was also the date of the adoption\, in 1970\, of the International Development Strategy for the Second United Nations Development Decade. Since the 1970s\, Governments dedicated themselves to the fundamental objectives enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations to create conditions of stability and well-being and to ensure a minimum standard of living consistent with human dignity through economic and social progress and development. The launching of the First United Nations Development Decade in 1961 marked a major world-wide endeavor to give concrete substance to that solemn pledge. Since then\, attempts have continued to adopt measures for that purpose. Unfortunately\, however\, the standard of living for millions of people in the world is still pitifully low: they are often still undernourished\, uneducated\, unemployed and wanting in many basic amenities. Nonetheless\, the current frustrations and disappointments must not be allowed to cloud the vision or stand in the way of the development objectives. The success of international development activities depend in large measure on improvement in the general international situation that requires concrete progress particularly in the promotion of equal political\, economic\, social and cultural rights for all members of society. The ultimate objective of development must be to bring about sustained improvement in the well-being of the individual and to bestow benefits on all. If undue privilege\, extremes of wealth\, and social injustice persist\, then development fails in its essential purpose. DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, the UN General Assembly decided (A/RES/75/267) to commemorate Media and Information Literacy (MIL) week\, citing the need for the dissemination of factual\, timely\, targeted\, clear\, accessible\, multilingual and science-based information. \nThe resolution recognizes that the substantial digital divide and data inequalities that exist among different countries and within them\, can be addressed in part by improving people’s competencies to seek\, receive and impart information in the digital realm. In the current ecosystem of complex and sometimes contradictory messages and meanings\, it is hard to conceive of the public good being advanced\, if the public is disempowered in the face of opportunities and threats. Each individual needs to be equipped with media and information literacy competencies to understand the stakes\, and to contribute to and benefit from information and communication opportunities. Global Media and Information Literacy Week\, commemorated annually\, is a major occasion for stakeholders to review and celebrate the progress achieved towards “Media and Information Literacy for All.” Our brains depend on information to work optimally. The quality of information we engage with largely determines our perceptions\, beliefs and attitudes. It could be information from other persons\, the media\, libraries\, archives\, museums\, publishers\, or other information providers including those on the Internet. \nPeople across the world are witnessing a dramatic increase in access to information and communication. While some people are starved for information\, others are flooded with print\, broadcast and digital content. Media and Information Literacy (MIL) provides answers to the questions that we all ask ourselves at some point. How can we access\, search\, critically assess\, use and contribute content wisely\, both online and offline? What are our rights online and offline? What are the ethical issues surrounding the access and use of information? How can we engage with media and information and communications technologies (ICTs) to promote equality\, intercultural and interreligious dialogue\, peace\, freedom of expression and access to information? Through capacity-building resources\, such as curricula development\, policy guidelines and articulation\, and assessment framework\, UNESCO supports the development of MIL competencies among people. \n2025 Theme: “Minds Over AI” – MIL in Digital Spaces. Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the way information is produced\, distributed\, and consumed in digital spaces. As AI technologies become more integrated into everyday communication\, shaping news feeds\, search results\, and even content creation\, the need for strong media and information literacy (MIL) has become increasingly urgent. MIL equips individuals with the critical thinking skills necessary to recognize\, evaluate\, and responsibly interact with AI-generated content. It empowers people to question sources\, understand algorithmic influence\, and make informed decisions in a digital environment dominated by automated systems. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly designated 31 October as World Cities Day\, by its resolution 68/239\, the Day is expected to greatly promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization\, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities addressing challenges of urbanization and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world. \nUrbanization provides the potential for new forms of social inclusion\, including greater equality\, access to services and new opportunities\, and engagement and mobilization that reflects the diversity of cities\, countries and the globe. Yet too often this is not the shape of urban development. Inequality and exclusion abound\, often at rates greater than the national average\, at the expense of sustainable development that delivers for all. Urban October was launched by UN-Habitat in 2014 to emphasize the world’s urban challenges and engage the international community towards the New Urban Agenda. Sustainable Development Goal 11\, which formulates the ambition to make cities and human settlements inclusive\, safe\, resilient and sustainable – underlying the relevance of UN-Habitat’s mission. Inequalities in cities have grown since 1980. The world largest cities are also often the most unequal\, and this year’s theme is embraced by the action and implementation of the New Urban Agenda\, which is putting the topic of inclusive cities as one of the main pillars for the urban shift. In October 2016\, the HABITAT III Conference\, held in Quito\, adopted a new framework\, which will set the world on a course towards sustainable urban development by rethinking how cities are planned\, managed and inhabited. The New Urban Agenda will set the pace on how to deal with the challenges of urbanization in the next two decades\, and is seen as an extension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, agreed on by the 193 Member States of the UN in September 2015. Cities are projected to house 70% of the world’s population by 2050\, facing unprecedented challenges in the context of climate change. By 2030\, an estimated 60% of people will live in urban areas\, with up to 60% of urban dwellers under 18. Despite progress towards Sustainable Development Goals\, cities\, particularly in the Global South\, continue to grapple with poverty\, inequality\, and environmental degradation\, necessitating urgent action. Experts emphasize the importance of involving youth in urban decision-making to harness their creativity and drive sustainable development. \nOn 31 October 2025\, the Global Observance of World Cities Day will take place in Bogotá\, Colombia\, under the topic of people-centred smart cities. It will showcase how data-driven decision making\, technology\, and AI can be used to improve urban life and recover from current shocks and crises. It will also focus on promoting smart city initiatives centered on people. This year’s theme reflects the growing recognition that the transformative power of digital technologies is reshaping urban life globally\, offering profound opportunities to enhance how cities and human settlements are designed\, planned\, managed and governed. In an era marked by both urban and digital transitions\, cities are increasingly adopting digital technology solutions and data to deliver better services for residents and address critical urban challenges and opportunities. The aim of this year’s theme is to promote people-centred smart cities and demonstrate how crucial it is for smart cities to prioritize human needs\, inclusivity\, and accessibility. Second\, the observance will provide a platform for cities to exchange best practices\, experiences and strategies in implementing people-centred smart city initiatives globally\, especially in addressing key challenges such as the global housing crisis. Lastly\, by increasing global awareness about the role of technology and innovation in advancing improved access to adequate housing and achieving urban development\, the goal is to foster and encourage international cooperation and collaboration among all societal sectors on People-Centred Smart Cities. \nLinks:\nWorld Cities Day
