Shell has made billions from the Groningen gas field, and it came with a high cost on citizens:

This is happening through Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) under the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), a secretive arbitration process where powerful destructive companies can sue states and claim billions from them when they choose public interest over corporate profit. And who will bear the cost? Taxpayers. These arbitration cases by the big polluters are costing public money and dragging on a difficult situation for residents, who are still waiting for repairs and justice. That’s just another stark reminder of why ISDS must be dismantled.
