On 19 August 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, five years later, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day (WHD).

Each year, WHD focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers. The 2023 World Humanitarian Day campaign brings together the global humanitarian community to mark the twentieth anniversary of the attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, and to show our unwavering commitment to deliver for the communities we serve, no matter who, no matter where and #NoMatterWhat.

Interested in having your photos featured on the upcoming World Photography Daily website? Submit your best photos taken around the world, and the stories behind them, for consideration. Any photo submitted must be one that you personally took, own the rights to, and give World Photography Daily permission to share on our site, and/or our social media outlets, and/or mailing list, with appropriate credit given. Currently, we’re looking in particular for landscape, cityscape, wildlife, nature, cultural and night photography, but all photos submitted will be reviewed for consideration.

Zomergasten is een Nederlands televisieprogramma van de VPRO dat elk jaar in de zomer, meer bepaald rond augustus, op zondagavond rechtstreeks uitgezonden wordt.

Het programma bestaat sinds 1988. In een avondvullend programma mag iedere zondag een bekende of interessante Nederlander, Vlaming of Nederlandssprekende buitenlander zijn of haar favoriete televisieavond samenstellen. De gast komt meestal uit de literatuur, wetenschap, televisie, de politiek of het bedrijfsleven. De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen.

🌏 De eerstvolgende Klimaatactieconferentie staat gepland voor zondag 24 november 2024.

De klimaatactieconferentie wordt tweemaal per jaar georganiseerd. Doel hiervan is om activisten uit verschillende organisaties en campagnes samen te brengen, strategische discussies te voeren en samen nieuwe initiatieven te nemen. De conferentie wordt georganiseerd door activisten met steun van diverse organisaties waaronder Extinction Rebellion, Fossielvrij NL, FNV, Greenpeace, Internationale Socialisten, Milieudefensie, Oxfam Novib, TNI, Scientist Rebellion en Wise. De klimaatactieconferentie is bedoeld voor iedereen die actief is in de klimaatbeweging: deelneemt aan protesten of zich op andere manieren hard maakt voor een rechtvaardig klimaatbeleid. Begin maart 2024 was de vierde drukbezochte actieconferentie. De volgende halfjaarlijkse bijeenkomst is op zondag 24 november 2024 in Utrecht. Sinds 2020 is de politieke context van onze strijd voor klimaatrechtvaardigheid niet zo snel veranderd als in de afgelopen maanden. (Extreem) rechts is in de Kamer nog nooit zo groot geweest, en links nog nooit zo klein. Welke gevolgen heeft dat voor de klimaatstrijd? Wat is de rol van massaprotest in het oplossen van de klimaatcrisis? Er staan tal van acties op stapel. Om de vinger op de zere plek te leggen organiseerde bijvoorbeeld de Klimaatcrisis Coalitie (KCC) op vrijdag 31 mei een massademonstratie op de Amsterdamse Zuidas.

Dag van de Vrijheidsstrijd : Herdenking van de opstand van slaafgemaakten op Curaçao (op 17 augustus 1795) 2024

De Curaçaose slavenopstand van 1795 was een van de belangrijkste georganiseerde verzetsactiviteiten op de Nederlandse Antillen.

De massale opstand, die een maand duurde maar uiteindelijk strandde, stond onder leiding van Tula. Zijn belangrijkste medestrijders waren Carpata, Mercier en Wacao. Alle verzetsleiders werden ter dood veroordeeld. Op Curaçao staat 17 augustus, de eerste dag van de opstand, bekend als ‘Dag van de Vrijheidsstrijd’.
