Stichting Vluchteling organiseert sinds 2010, rondom Wereldvluchtelingendag (20 juni), de Nacht van de Vluchteling om humanitaire crises in de wereld onder de aandacht te brengen.
Door middel van dit evenement laten ze zien solidair te zijn met mensen op de vlucht en halen we samen zoveel mogelijk geld op. Met deze opbrengst kan Stichting Vluchteling met haar lokale partners snel ter plekke levensreddende noodhulp bieden zoals onderdak, medische zorg, voedsel, drinkwater en sanitaire voorzieningen. De Nacht van de Vluchteling is een wandeltocht waar bewustwording, uitdagende kilometers en de bijzondere sfeer van saamhorigheid centraal staan. Je kan je individueel inschrijven, maar ook samen met je familie of als organisatie een team starten. Onder de deelnemers zijn er ook mensen met een eigen vluchtverhaal en organisaties die zich dagelijks inzetten voor dit thema. Dit zorgt onderweg voor mooie ontmoetingen en gesprekken. In 2025 wordt gestart vanuit; Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Nijmegen, Tilburg én voor het eerst in Groningen! De 10 – en 20 km routes finishen op dezelfde startlocatie. Deelnemers aan de 40 km routes finishen in Haarlem, Amersfoort, Den Haag, Arnhem, Den Bosch en (ook) Groningen.
Extinction Rebellion roept ING op: maak in 2025 schoon schip.
Op zaterdag 25 januari om 12:00 blokkeren honderden rebellen van Extinction Rebellion opnieuw de A10 tegenover de ‘Poenschoen’, het oude hoofdkantoor van grootvervuiler ING. De blokkade volgt op een uiterst verontrustend jaar. 2024 is het heetste jaar sinds het begin van de metingen, met een temperatuur boven 1,5 graad verhitting, een jaar waarin mensen wereldwijd stierven door klimaatrampen en ecosystemen verder zijn vernietigd. Extinction Rebellion eist dat ING, een van de medeveroorzakers van de klimaat- en ecologische crisis, per direct stopt met alle financiering van en dienstverlening aan de fossiele industrie.

Starting from late September 2024, Ethiopia has experienced series of earthquakes ranging from 4.8 to 5.8 Richter magnitude scale with initial epicenter from Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale and spread across much of central Ethiopia.
On 6 October 2024, a series of earthquakes with 4.9-magnitude tremor occurred starting to Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale area and spread into Oromia Region, causing widespread concern. The epicenter was about 23 km northeast of Awash as the tremor occurred at the depth of 10 km and the shaking was felt across central Ethiopia. Over 30 homes collapsed in Afar while thousands fled to neighboring area as refuge. Pubic officials responded by shutdown of transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to investigate the damage and power outages were likely to be measured. On 13 October, a magnitude of 4.6 quake happened in Oromia Region at around 07:37. The shaking affected throughout central and eastern Ethiopia, such as southern Afar, southern Amhara, and central Oromia regions, northwestern Somali Region, and the capital Addis Ababa. Also on 16 October, an earthquake was observed in Metehara area in Oromia at 23:11 local time with 4.8 magnitude registered. The Volcano Discovery discovered that the tremor struck at the shallow depth of 10 km beneath the Earth surface. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) was the first to detail seismic event, providing crucial data for understanding its effects. According to initial reports, residents nearby the epicenter were likely saw a quake, though caused minimal damage.
On 29 December, an earthquake reoccurred in afternoon and until in the morning 5.1 magnitude. Prior to this, two earthquakes occurred in a week. In January 2025, 10 earthquakes were recorded within 24 hours in a week. According to the US Geological Survey, these multiple quakes were 4.3 to 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred around Fentale volcano in Awash. Since 3 January 2025, signs of a volcanic eruption began to appear, prompting authorities to move residents to temporary shelters. The Ethiopian Geological Institute posted a video in Facebook page depicting dust and smoke emerging from a volcano in Awash Fentale in Afar region. On that day, another quake strike with the magnitude 5.8 in epicenter of Addis Ababa. It was at a shallow depth of 10 km according the US Geological Survey and the German Research Centre for Geosciences.
World Braille Day is an annual international day on 4 January and celebrates awareness of the importance of braille as a means of communication in the full realization of the human rights for blind and visually impaired people.
The date for the event was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly via a proclamation in November 2018, and marks the birthday of Louis Braille, creator of this writing system. The first World Braille Day was celebrated on January 4, 2019. Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font. Braille is essential in the context of education, freedom of expression and opinion, as well as social inclusion, as reflected in article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
