CES (/ˌsi.i.ˈɛs/; formerly an initialism for Consumer Electronics Show) is an annual trade show organized by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), held in January at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Winchester, Nevada, United States, the event typically hosts presentations of new products and technologies in the consumer electronics industry.

Most people would agree that the only legitimate form of government is a democracy, and yet when most of us go to work we enter a world of hierarchies that is rather undemocratic.
In many workplaces, bosses make the decisions and employees carry out their tasks, be it as office worker or bike courier. But why shouldn’t the workplace also be a democracy? Together with Professor of Political Philosophy Lisa Herzog and member of Organize the RUG Manuel Reyes, Tuur Elzinga discusses the future of workplace democracy. Tuur Elzinga, director of the Federation of Dutch Trade Unions (FNV) believes it’s time we put real democracy into practice—both in society and in the workplace. In his recent book Democraten aller landen, verenigt u (2024), he argues that many of our current challenges, such as the rise of far-right populism, are rooted in the perception that our institutions no longer reflect the interest of ordinary people. The January 7, 2025, M7.1 earthquake near Xizang, Tibet, occurred as the result of normal faulting at shallow depth north of the boundary between the Eurasia and Indian plates.
Focal mechanism solutions indicate that rupture occurred on a roughly north-south striking fault, dipping moderately to either to the east or to the west. Continental collision between the India and Eurasia plates drives uplift of the Himalayan Mountains. Focal mechanism solutions of this earthquake indicate this event was associated with a normal fault oriented roughly perpendicular to the plate boundary north of the Himalayan Mountains within the Eurasian plate. While commonly plotted as points on maps, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as slip over a larger fault area. Normal faulting events of the size of the January 7, 2025 earthquake are typically about 45 km by 20 km (length x width). The region near the India and Eurasia plate boundary has a history of large earthquakes. In the past century, there have been 10 earthquakes of magnitude 6 and greater within 250 km of the January 7, 2025, earthquake. This includes the 2015 M7.3 Nepal earthquake, located about 160 km to the southwest and the 1934 M8.0 earthquake, located about 160 to the south-southwest.

The American Astronomical Society (AAS) is an American society of professional astronomers and other interested individuals, headquartered in Washington, DC.
The primary objective of the AAS is to promote the advancement of astronomy and closely related branches of science, while the secondary purpose includes enhancing astronomy education and providing a political voice for its members through lobbying and grassroots activities. ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag) is een non-profit showcase festival en conferentie voor en over Europese popmuziek dat jaarlijks vier dagen lang in januari in de Nederlandse stad Groningen plaatsvindt.
Eurosonic Noorderslag wordt georganiseerd door Stichting Noorderslag die als doel het versterken van de Europese popsector en promotie van Europese popmuziek heeft, met ieder jaar één land als focusland waar extra aandacht aan besteed wordt. Om dit te bereiken biedt de stichting een podium voor de presentatie van Europees muziektalent en bevordert zij de internationale uitwisseling hiervan. Middelen hiertoe zijn twee festivals (Eurosonic en Noorderslag), een conferentie, een talentuitwisselingsprogramma (European Talent Exchange Programme) en de presentatie van verschillende muziekprijzen. In de middag van 6 januari 2025 komen er van het zuidwesten uit overal in Nederland en België zware windstoten voor.
Nederland:
Deze kunnen lastig zijn voor het verkeer, vooral voor fietsers, vrachtwagens en auto’s met aanhanger. Ook is er kans op ongelukken door het afbreken van boomtakken. Vanaf het einde van de middag nemen de windstoten van het zuidwesten uit weer af, maar het Waddengebied heeft het grootste deel van de avond nog hiermee te maken.
België:
Maandagnamiddag trekt een storing vanaf het westen door België, daarbij zijn er lokale rukwinden van 80 tot 90 km/u mogelijk, of zeer lokaal meer.

In heel Nederland klinkt op elke eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 het luchtalarm van het waarschuwingsstelsel of waarschuwings- en alarmeringssysteem (WAS), behalve op feestdagen, Nationale Dodenherdenking of bij andere speciale gebeurtenissen.
De test duurt 1 minuut en 26 seconden. In juli en december wordt tevens een NL-Alert testbericht verstuurd naar mobiele (GSM) telefoons. Het WAS is een netwerk van 4278 sirenes in Nederland die draadloos en onafhankelijk van elkaar aangezet kunnen worden vanuit de alarmcentrale van de regionale brandweer. De sirenes worden gebruikt om te waarschuwen via een luchtalarm voor (dreigend) gevaar, met name indien er gevaarlijke stoffen in de lucht aanwezig (kunnen) zijn. Het systeem is ontwikkeld door Siemens, en gebruikt elektronische sirenes op basis van de Federal Signal Modulator 2008 en 1004. Het waarschuwingsstelsel is eigendom van het Ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid, en is op 3 juni 1998 in gebruik genomen. De bevolking is van tevoren geïnstrueerd om in het geval dat de sirene afgaat naar binnen te gaan, ramen en deuren te sluiten en radio of televisie aan te zetten. Op de aangewezen calamiteitenzenders kan de overheid verdere aanwijzingen geven, bijvoorbeeld dat een gebied geëvacueerd zal worden.

‘Het Ballenalarm‘ is een ludieke actie waarmee de Stichting Zaadbalkanker vraagt om extra aandacht voor zaadbalkanker, ook wel teelbalkanker genoemd. Het idee is dat mannen op de eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 – als de maandelijkse alarmsirenes loeien – hun teelballen checken, en dit elke maand opnieuw. Dit moet leiden tot de vroegtijdige ontdekking van zaadbalkanker, de meest voorkomende kanker bij mannen tussen de 15 en 40 jaar.
