Zoals ook met de andere seizoenen wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen de meteorologische en de astronomische winter, de meteorologische winter loopt volgens afspraak tijdens de maanden december, januari en februari op het noordelijk halfrond en juni, juli en augustus op het zuidelijk halfrond.
