The 36th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony 2026
The Ig Nobel Prize (/ˌɪɡ noʊˈbɛl/) is a satirical prize awarded annually since 1991 to promote public engagement with scientific research, its aim is to “honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think.”
The name of the award is a pun on the Nobel Prize, which it parodies, and on the word “ignoble”. Organized by the scientific humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research (AIR), the Ig Nobel Prizes are presented by Nobel laureates in a ceremony at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The winners also deliver public lectures. The Ig Nobel Prize monetary award is given in a solitary banknote for the amount of 10 trillion Zimbabwean dollars ($0.40 USD, but the banknote is worth more as a collector’s item). The previous 35 ceremonies all took place in the USA, in Cambridge/Boston. In a break from tradition, this year’s ceremony took place in Zürich, Switzerland.

Organized by the scientific humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research (AIR), the Ig Nobel Prizes are presented by Nobel laureates in a ceremony at the Sanders Theater at Harvard University, and are followed by the winners’ public lectures at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The 2024 Ig Nobel Prizes were awarded at the 34th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony, on Thursday evening, September 12, 2024, at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After four pandemic-years in which the ceremony happened only online, this resumed the tradition of doing it with everyone together in a big room with an audience. The ceremony, as per tradition, also was webcast.

The 33rd First Annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony happened on Thursday, September 14, 2023. The 2023 ceremony happened entirely as a webcast, not in a theatre. A New, Additional Event One Month After the Ceremony: there will be a new, companion event called Ig Nobel Face-to-Face. The new Ig Nobel Prize winners and other researchers will ask each other questions about their work. (There will also be music and paper airplanes and other good stuff.) This new event will happen in the new MIT Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, on Saturday evening, November 11, 2023.
