Italian Competition Authority: investigation launched against Armani and Dior group companies for alleged unfair commercial practices – publication
According to the Italian Competition Authority, in some cases the companies may have used supplies from laboratories employing workers who would receive inadequate wages and they would work hours in excess of the legal limits and in inadequate health and safety conditions, in contrast to the boasted levels of production excellence.
The Italian Competition Authority, also as a result of the activity carried out by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Court of Milan which has been widely published by the press, has opened investigation proceedings against some companies in Armani Group (Giorgio Armani S.p.A. e G.A. Operations S.p.A.), and separate investigation proceedings against some companies in Dior Group (Christian Dior Couture S.A., Christian Dior Italia S.r.l. e Manufactures Dior S.r.l.) for possible unlawful conducts in the promotion and sale of clothes’ items and accessories, in violation of the provisions of the Consumer Code. In both cases, the companies may have issued untrue statements about their ethics and social responsibility, in particular with regard to working conditions and compliance with the law by their suppliers. Moreover, the companies emphasised craftsmanship and quality. However, in order to make certain articles and clothing accessories the companies allegedly used supplies from workshops and factories employing workers who would receive inadequate wages. In addition, such workers would work hours in excess of the legal limits and in inadequate health and safety conditions, in contrast to the production excellence levels the companies pride themselves. Authority’s officials, with the support of the Special Antitrust Unit of the Italian Financial Police (Guardia di Finanza), carried out inspections at the premises of the companies Giorgio Armani S.p.A. and G.A. Operations S.p.A. as well as Christian Dior Italia S.r.l.
Meteorenzwerm Perseïden in augustus 2024
De meteorenzwerm Perseïden bereikt op maandag 12 augustus 2024, rond 21:00, zijn maximum, de meteoren van de Perseïden zijn helder en snel en hebben nalichtende sporen.
Wanneer de radiant in het zenit zou staan, zouden er van deze zwerm naar verwachting gemiddeld zo’n 85 meteoren per uur vallen. De radiant van de zwerm staat rond 07:30 in het hoogste punt aan de hemel, op 84° boven de horizon. Het beste moment om Perseïden waar te nemen is op 13 augustus rond 03:45. De radiant staat op dat moment zo’n 60° boven de horizon, in het oostnoordoosten. Er zijn dan bij ons ieder uur naar schatting ongeveer 40–55 meteoren van deze zwerm zichtbaar. In totaal zijn er, door meteoren van andere zwermen en sporadische meteoren, bij donkere en heldere hemel circa 50–65 meteoren per uur zichtbaar. Op een donkere locatie zijn ongeveer drie keer zoveel meteoren te zien als in dichtbevolkt gebied. De Maan stoort niet. Rond 5:45 uur gaat het schemeren en om 06:21 komt de Zon op. Over het algemeen zijn de de meteoren van een zwerm niet alleen op de dag van het maximum zichtbaar. Zo is gedurende circa 3,1 dagen rondom het maximum ruim 50% van het maximum aantal meteoren per uur (23) van de Perseïden te zien. Tot 12 dagen voor en na het maximum zijn nog meteoren van deze zwerm te herkennen. De zwerm heeft daarmee een relatief korte piek. Iedere dag verder weg van het maximum zijn er ongeveer 40% minder meteoren per uur te zien. De typische snelheden van de meteoren in deze zwerm zijn met circa 59 km/s (ongeveer 213.840 km/uur) relatief hoog.

World Cleanup Day 2024
World Cleanup Day 2024 event takes place on Friday 20 September and aims to activate 5% of the world’s population that will catalyse lasting societal change in behaviour around mismanaged waste.
On 8 December 2023, the United Nations General Assembly, in its seventy-eighth session, unanimously adopted resolution 78/122 “World Cleanup Day”, which proclaims 20 September as World Cleanup Day. The resolution invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, other international and regional organizations, and other relevant stakeholders – including civil society, the private sector and academia – to observe World Cleanup Day through activities aimed at raising awareness of the role clean-up efforts play in sustainable development. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) facilitates the observance of the Day. Over the years, many national, regional and local governments and communities have been undertaking clean-up activities globally. World Cleanup Day represents the reflection on their achievements. The clean-ups serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility we share in preserving and maintaining a clean and healthy environment as well as sustainable waste and resources management.
The theme of the inaugural event, taking place on 20 September 2024 in the city of Tromsø, Norway, is “Arctic Cities and Marine Litter”. The event, convened with support from UN-Habitat, GRID-Arendal, and the Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, the municipality of Tromsø, the Fram Centre, and Let’s Do It World, aims to inspire global communities to adopt sustainable practices that protect the arctic regions. The Arctic’s delicate ecosystem necessitates focused efforts on plastic and marine litter clean-up. Cities like Tromsø, within the Arctic Circle, face unique challenges due to extreme weather, isolation, and costly infrastructure. The inaugural World Cleanup Day in Tromsø showcases Norway’s innovative waste management strategies tailored to harsh climates. The event will highlight the role of innovation, community involvement, and collaboration in creating sustainable waste systems that protect the Arctic environment and contribute to global waste reduction efforts. It also emphasizes the importance of professional cleanups and innovative funding mechanisms in tackling waste management challenges in complex urban settings.

World Snake Day / Wereldslangendag 2024
July 16 is World Snake Day, an opportunity to celebrate snakes and raise awareness about their preservation.
While snakes are threatened by many of the same issues that affect all wildlife (habitat loss, climate change, and disease), negative attitudes toward snakes may be the biggest barrier to their preservation because it often impedes efforts to address other threats.

Internationale Vierdaagse Afstandsmarsen Nijmegen / De Vierdaagse Nijmegen 2024
De Vierdaagse Nijmegen, officieel de Internationale Vierdaagse Afstandsmarsen Nijmegen, is een vierdaags wandelevenement dat sinds 1909 ieder jaar wordt gehouden en start op de derde dinsdag van juli.

Gebouw en terreinen van De Vereeniging aan het Keizer Karelplein in Nijmegen zijn langjarig start- en finishplaats en onderkomen van de organisatie geweest. Inmiddels is dat verplaatst naar de nabijgelegen Wedren, waar met tijdelijke voorzieningen veel meer ruimte is gecreëerd ook in het aangrenzende Julianapark en op het Vierdaagseplein
Het evenement werd sinds 1928 traditioneel geopend met een vlaggenparade; sinds 1951 werd deze kleurrijke deelnemersontva
