Issued annually since 2006, the Arctic Report Card is a timely and peer-reviewed source for clear, reliable and concise environmental information on the current state of different components of the Arctic environmental system relative to historical records.
The rapid pace and complexity of Arctic change demand new and strengthened Arctic adaptation and global reductions of fossil fuel pollution. The Arctic continues to warm at a faster rate than the global average. The 2024 Arctic Report Card highlights record-breaking and near-record-breaking observations that demonstrate dramatic change, including Arctic tundra transformation from carbon sink to carbon source, declines of previously large inland caribou herds, and increasing winter precipitation. Observations also reveal regional differences that make local and regional experiences of environmental change highly variable for people, plants and animals. Adaptation is increasingly necessary and Indigenous Knowledge and community-led research programs are essential to understand and respond to rapid Arctic changes.
Op de metershoge reclamezuil op Schiphol Plaza prijkt sinds 10 december 2024 vanaf 09:00 een enorm spandoek met de tekst ‘KLM, je vliegt alle klimaatgrenzen voorbij’, opgehangen door klimmers van Greenpeace Nederland.
KLM is de grootste vervuiler van de Nederlandse luchtvaartindustrie en verzet zich tegen de recent aangekondigde krimpplannen van het kabinet. Greenpeace eist dat KLM met een krimpplan komt en stopt met onnodige korte vluchten.

CAMRAS heeft met de historische Dwingeloo telescoop signalen van de ruimtesonde Voyager 1 ontvangen.
Er zijn maar weinig telescopen die dit signaal hebben ontvangen. Het signaal is erg zwak vanwege de afstand van Voyager 1: bijna 25 miljard kilometer, meer dan vier keer zo ver als Pluto. Voyager 1 is in 1977 gelanceerd om de buitenste planeten van het zonnestelsel te bezoeken. Na het einde van de primaire missie is Voyager 1 uit het zonnestelsel gestuurd. Het is momenteel het verste en snelste door mensen gemaakte object, onderweg in de insterstellaire ruimte. Zijn radiosignalen, die met de snelheid van het licht reizen, doen er momenteel 23 uur over om aarde te bereiken. Aangezien de Dwingeloo telescoop voor lagere frequenties is ontworpen dan de 8.4GHz van de Voyager 1-telemetrie, moest er een nieuwe feed in de focus geplaatst worden. Op deze hogere frequenties is het gaas minder reflecterend, wat het extra uitdagend maakt om zwakke signalen te ontvangen. In oktober van dit jaar schakelde Voyager 1 één van zijn twee zenders uit. Het team van NASA JPL is erin geslaagd om de juiste zender weer in te schakelen, die nu weer goed werkt. Om het zwakke signaal in de ruis te vinden, hebben we baangegevens van Voyager 1 gebruikt om te corrigeren voor de Doppler-verschuiving in frequentie veroorzaakt door de beweging van aarde en Voyager 1. Hierdoor konden we het signaal live vanuit de waarneemruimte zien. Analyse van de opgenomen signalen bevestigde ook dat de Dopplerverschuiving overeenkwam met die van Voyager 1. NASA gebruikt zelf schotels van het Deep Space Network (DSN) om te communiceren met Voyager 1. Deze schotels, verspreid over de aarde in Goldstone, Canberra en Madrid, zijn geoptimaliseerd voor deze hogere frequenties en hebben een diameter van 70 meter, flink groter dan de 25 meter Dwingeloo telescoop.
Extinction Rebellion Nederland (XR) organiseert een demonstratie tegen Schiphol en de KLM en combineert dit met een goed en duurzaam doel.
KLM wordt met miljoenen overheidssteun in de lucht gehouden terwijl KLM met haar operatie zorgt voor de dood en het lijden van miljoenen mensen in Nederland en ver daarbuiten. Voor deze grote actie op 14 december 2024 worden twee zaken gecombineerd: demonstreren met een actie voor het goede doel. Terwijl KLM onnodig reizen aanmoedigt zijn slachtoffers van de klimaatcrisis in Spanje nu al hun bewegingsvrijheid kwijt. Slachtoffers van de overstromingen in Valencia kunnen niet eens meer reizen voor allernoodzakelijkste behoeftes: boodschappen halen, naar hun werk of school omdat wegen onbegaanbaar zijn. We hebben allemaal de auto’s zien stromen door de straten van Valencia. Maar liefst 100.000 auto’s zijn onbruikbaar. XR-reisbureau staat voor anders denken over mobiliteit. Er wordt dan ook de samenwerking aangegaan met Bicis contra el lodo (Fietsen tegen de modder). In tegenstelling tot het Frequent Flyer programma gaan wij geen punten sparen voor gratis vliegreisjes, maar fietsen voor Valencia. Niet sparen voor jezelf, maar sparen voor een ander. Naast deze actie voor Valencia wordt op zaterdag 14 december een grote actie op Schiphol gehouden. Bij deze demonstratie roept XR KLM op om te stoppen met haar schadelijke Flying Blue programma. Om onze actie toegankelijk te maken zullen ze, ondersteund door Greenpeace, ook een grote openbare demonstratie organiseren op Schiphol.

In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly established 9 December as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime.
The 9th of December is the anniversary of the adoption of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the “Genocide Convention”). The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the Genocide Convention and its role in combating and preventing the crime of genocide, as defined in the Convention, and to commemorate and honour its victims. In adopting the resolution, without a vote, the 193-member Assembly reiterated the responsibility of each individual State to protect its populations from genocide, which entails the prevention of such a crime, including incitement to it.
The 2024 high-level Event will be held in person at the United Nations Headquarters in New York at the Trusteeship Council Chamber on 9 December 2024, 17:00 – 19:00 CEST. It will also be live webcasted on UNTV. It will include opening remarks, followed by a panel discussion and statements from regional groups of Member States. The event is open to Member States, UN staff, civil society, media and the public.

Corruption is a complex social, political and economic phenomenon that affects all countries and undermines democratic institutions, slows economic development and contributes to governmental instability.
Corruption attacks the foundation of democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, perverting the rule of law and creating bureaucratic quagmires, whose only reason for existing is the soliciting of bribes. Economic development is stunted, because foreign direct investment is discouraged and small businesses within the country often find it impossible to overcome the “start-up costs” required, because of corruption. On 31 October 2003, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and requested that the Secretary-General designate the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as the secretariat for the Convention’s Conference of States Parties (resolution 58/4). Since then, 190 parties have committed to the Convention’s anti-corruption obligations, showing near-universal recognition of the importance of good governance, accountability, and political commitment. The Assembly also designated 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day, to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it. The Convention entered into force in December 2005. At its twentieth anniversary and beyond, this Convention and the values it promotes are more important than ever, which requires everyone to join efforts to tackle this crime. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the Secretariat for the Convention’s Conference of the States Parties, are at the forefront of ensuring a world #UnitedAgainstCorruption. 2024 theme: ‘Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity‘.
