Internet consultatie Contourennota intrekking Spreidingswet
In het Regeerprogramma en de ‘Nadere afspraken ten aanzien van de uitvoering van hoofdstuk 2 van het Hoofdlijnenakkoord 2024-2028’ van 25 oktober 2024 is de intrekking van de Wet gemeentelijke taak mogelijk maken asielopvangvoorzieningen (Spreidingswet) aangekondigd.
Er is onder meer gereageerd door Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers (Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers Berry Huijts), VNG (Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten), VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (M.H. Kruyt), Secretariaat Nederlandse orde van advocaten.

#IDAHOT #IDAHOBIT Dag tegen Homofobie, Transfobie en Bifobie 2025
De Dag tegen Homofobie, Bifobie, Transfobie en Interseksefobie (Engels: Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia and Intersexephobia), jaarlijks op 17 mei, is een dag waarop lgbt-organisaties internationaal aandacht vragen voor het verschijnsel homohaat en de sociale onwenselijkheid daarvan.
De dag is ook wel bekend onder de Engelse afkorting IDAHOT. IDAHOT is voortgekomen uit een nationale dag tegen homofobie die de Canadese organisatie Fondation Émergence in 2003 organiseerde, toen nog op 1 juni. Sinds 2005 wordt de Internationale Dag tegen Homofobie en Transfobie ook in andere landen gevierd, steeds op 17 mei. De datum van 17 mei is ingegeven door het feit dat op die dag in 1990 de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) homoseksualiteit officieel schrapte van de internationaal gehanteerde lijst van ziekten, de International Classification of Diseases. Tot dan toe stond homoseksualiteit op die lijst als psychische aandoening te boek.
Aanvankelijk ging deze dag vooral om bewustwording omtrent afkeer jegens homoseksuele mannen en lesbische vrouwen en heette dan ook International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO). In 2009 werd Transphobia aan deze naam toegevoegd, als erkenning van zowel de verschillen als de overeenkomsten met homofobie. De afkorting veranderde toen in IDAHOT. Sinds 2015 is ook Biphobia in de officiële naam opgenomen om daarmee aandacht te vragen voor de specifieke problemen van biseksuelen. Sommige groepen in Engeland en Australië gingen toen de afkorting IDAHOBIT gebruiken, maar wereldwijd is IDAHOT nog steeds het meest gangbaar.
Het verschil van de IDAHOT met evenementen als de Amsterdam Gay Pride en de The Belgian Pride is dat homo-organisaties en holebi’s bij die gelegenheden willen uitstralen dat ze trots zijn op hun seksuele geaardheid en zich er niet voor willen schamen, terwijl het er bij IDAHOT juist om gaat aandacht te vragen voor het verschijnsel homo-, bi- en transgenderhaat en de sociale onwenselijkheid daarvan. De slogan van de internationale campagne in 2008, Homosexuality is NOT a sickness!, illustreert dit. Enigszins vergelijkbaar is Paarse Vrijdag, die in Nederland op de tweede vrijdag van december plaatsvindt en waarop onder meer op scholen paarse kleding wordt gedragen als statement tegen homofobie.

Adapting agriculture to climate catastrophes: the nuclear winter case – publication
The Doomsday clock, which symbolically measures how close the world is to nuclear war, is currently at 89 seconds until midnight – the closest it’s ever been.
Over the past few years, we’ve also heard two presidents discuss the “nuclear option.” This is all to say that the world is surprisingly close to nuclear war. We’ve just become numb to that reality. But what happens after the nuclear bombs go off? A team led by researchers at Penn State have modelled precisely how various nuclear winter scenarios could affect global production of corn, the most widely planted grain crop in the world. They also recommended preparing ‘agricultural resilience kits’ with seeds for faster-growing varieties better adapted to colder temperatures that could potentially help offset the effects of nuclear winter, as well as natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions. In findings recently published in Environmental Research Letters, the team reported that the level of corn crop decline would vary, depending on the scale of the conflict. A regional nuclear war, which would send about 5.5 tonnes of soot into the atmosphere, could reduce worldwide annual corn production by seven per cent. A large-scale global war, injecting 165 tonnes of soot into the atmosphere, could lead to an 80 per cent drop in annual corn yields. In all, the study simulated six nuclear war scenarios with varying soot injections.
Because of the crop’s global significance, the researchers chose to model corn’s collapse in a nuclear winter to represent the expected fate of agriculture overall, according to study first author Yuning Shi, associate research professor in Penn State’s Department of Plant Science. He noted that an 80 per cent drop in global crop production would have catastrophic consequences, leading to a widespread global food crisis. Even a seven per cent drop in global crop production would have a severe effect on the global food system and economy, likely resulting in increased food insecurity and hunger. The simulations were possible thanks to the Cycles agroecosystem model, created a few years ago by scientists in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, including lead developer Armen Kemanian, professor of production systems and modelling and corresponding author on this study. Using high-performance computing and considering atmospheric conditions, Cycles enables large-scale, high-resolution, multi-year simulations of crop growth by meticulously tracking the carbon and nitrogen cycles within the soil-plant-atmosphere system.

Het Filmfestival van Cannes (Festival de Cannes) is een prestigieus internationaal filmfestival.
Het wordt sinds 1946 elk jaar in de Franse stad Cannes gehouden in het Palais des Festivals et des Congrès op de La Croisette. Het vindt jaarlijks plaats in de derde week van mei. Omdat het festival veel aandacht van de media krijgt, wordt het door veel filmsterren bezocht en is het een populaire gelegenheid voor filmproducenten om hun nieuwe films te presenteren en deze aan distributeurs te verkopen. De meest prestigieuze prijs die in Cannes wordt toegekend is de Palme d’Or (Gouden Palm) voor de beste film; deze wordt soms gedeeld door meerdere films in hetzelfde jaar. De filmsterren worden in luxueuze limousines vervoerd tot aan de beroemde rode loper, waarna zij de trappen bestijgen, om vervolgens aan de blikken van het grote publiek te worden onttrokken.
