World Sea Turtle Day, June 16th, is a day used to honor and highlight the importance of sea turtles.

These creatures, like any other creature, are magnificent in their own way. Not only are sea turtles beautiful animals, but they also show incredible perseverance and resiliency – after all, they have been nesting on beaches for millions of years. World Sea Turtle Day would not be rightfully celebrated without mentioning, Dr. Archie Carr, Sea Turtle Conservancy’s founder and “father of sea turtle biology.” World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated the same day as Dr. Carr’s birthday, June 16th. Dr. Carr will forever be remembered for the enhancement of the sea turtle conservation movement and the legacy he has left behind. His research and advocacy brought attention to the threatening conditions that continue to impact sea turtles today. His work highlighted the issues and helped create the community that continues to strive for a better life and future for sea turtles around the globe.

De Opstand in Soweto op 16 juni 1976 was een belangrijke gebeurtenis in de strijd tegen het Apartheidsbewind in Zuid-Afrika.

Soweto is de afkorting voor South Western Townships, de townships voor de zwarte bevolking ten zuidwesten van Johannesburg. Aanleiding voor de opstand waren de plannen van minister van onderwijs, Andries Treurnicht, om het Afrikaans als algemene onderwijstaal in te voeren. Uit protest daartegen verzamelden de scholieren zich onder leiding van de scholier Tsietsi Mashinini voor een demonstratie in Orlando, Soweto. De politie sloeg de scholierenopstand keihard neer. Volgens de opgave van de politie kwamen bij de rellen 23 mensen om het leven; volgens de andere bronnen lag het aantal slachtoffers ruim boven de 500. Na de opstand werden talrijke jongeren bij razzia’s opgepakt. De onlusten sloegen over op andere townships en duurden tot 1978. Het bloedbad leidde tot stakingen van de zwarte bevolking en wereldwijde protesten. Het eerste slachtoffer van de opstand was de scholier Hastings Ndlovu. Veel bekender is echter de naam van Hector Pieterson. De foto waarop Hectors lichaam door zijn vriend Nbuyisa Mukhubu wordt weggedragen van het tumult, is de wereld overgegaan en heeft de wereld gechoqueerd. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Monty Python And The Holy Grail with an all day marathon event on Shout! TV and Shout! Movies, throughout the 24-hour marathon, fans can enjoy appearances from Python legends Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam as they reflect on their favorite memories of the film.

These newly filmed interstitials exclusive to Shout! TV and Shout! Movies feature the cast reflecting on the movie’s lasting impact — from Terry Gilliam talking about his dual role as director and actor, John Cleese sharing what quotes he still gets to this day, Michael Palin saying it was all a bit silly, and plenty more behind-the-scenes stories and laughs along the way. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a 1975 British comedy film based on the Arthurian legend, written and performed by the Monty Python comedy group (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin) and directed by Gilliam and Jones in their feature directorial debuts. It was conceived during the hiatus between the third and fourth series of their BBC Television series Monty Python’s Flying Circus. While the group’s first film, And Now for Something Completely Different, was a compilation of sketches from the first two television series, Holy Grail is an original story that parodies the legend of King Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail. Thirty years later, Idle used the film as the basis for the 2005 Tony Award-winning musical Spamalot. Monty Python and the Holy Grail grossed more than any other British film screened in the US in 1975, and has since been considered one of the greatest comedy films of all time. In the US, it was selected in 2011 as the second-best comedy of all time in the ABC special Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time behind Airplane!. In the UK, readers of Total Film magazine in 2000 ranked it the fifth-greatest comedy film of all time; a similar poll of Channel 4 viewers in 2006 placed it sixth.

#WorldDengueDay Wereld Knokkelkoorts Dag 2025

Building on a rapidly growing global consensus, in 2018 the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) started a worldwide dengue awareness campaign, which included calling on the UN and WHO to designate a World Dengue Day.

Its petition for a World Dengue Day has to date garnered over 26,500 signatures, endorsed by a growing and global collective of patients, policy makers, researchers, professionals and advocates from over 110 countries, who share the clear goal of reducing the burden of dengue around the world. In addition, ISNTD also convened an international and multi-sectoral Dengue Advisory Group, comprised of partners from Ministries of Health, research and academia, NGOs and civic society, to guide this campaign. Such a move is not without precedent. On 15 June 2011, ASEAN Health Ministers first declared that day — and each subsequent 15 June — ASEAN Dengue Day. This important annual event allows ASEAN members, in coordination with WHO, to consolidate dengue prevention and control measures.

The World Dengue Day campaign is aiming to achieve the same – on an international scale given the rapidly growing global threat of dengue. Growing population densities, unplanned urban development, poor water storage and unsatisfactory sanitary conditions are all common factors that contribute to the worsening burden of this mosquito-borne disease – not just for ASEAN, but for many countries around the world. The disease has significant impact on the socio-economic status of every country. Tackling dengue is everyone’s concern. ISNTD-ADVA World Dengue Day Forum – Cross Sector Synergies marks a day that all governments, civil societies, public and private sectors, schools, universities and citizens, can devote to dengue awareness-raising actions. Additionally, the Forum will give countries around the world a platform to share their strategies for increasing public awareness of dengue, mobilize resources for its prevention and control, and demonstrate their commitment to tackling dengue.
