Het Braziliaanse Congres heeft op 21 mei 2025 het meest milieuonvriendelijke en verwoestende wetsvoorstel Bill 2159/2021 uit hun geschiedenis goedgekeurd.

3.000 stukken land, waaronder ruim een derde van alle Inheemse grondgebieden, raken de wettelijke bescherming kwijt die al tientallen grootschalige exploitatie tegenhoudt. De jacht op het Amazonewoud is geopend, en de minister van Milieu heeft gezegd dat dit een ‘doodslag’ is voor de klimaatambities van Brazilië. Hij wil van Brazilië een wereldleider maken, dus zijn internationale imago is belangrijk. Als hij niets doet, zal de laatste verdedigingslinie van het Amazonewoud verdwijnen. Om een klimaatcatastrofe te voorkomen, is het van essentieel belang dat er juist snel en betekenisvol wordt geïnvesteerd in bosbescherming en in de opbouw van een duurzame en inclusieve bio-economie. Brazilië moet hierin het voortouw nemen – te beginnen op de VN-klimaatconferentie (COP30) die in november plaatsvindt in Belém, Brazilië. Lula heeft ooit toegezegd een klimaatvoorvechter te zullen worden. Met een wereldwijde oproep kunnen wij de steun geven die Lula nodig heeft om tegen het Congres in te gaan en deze belofte waar te maken.

Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza -dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop.

Je kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen:

1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza.

2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht;

3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ).

4. Een strategie voor duurzame vrede, met garanties voor de mensenrechten en veiligheid van zowel Palestijnen als Israëliërs.

Earth Overshoot Day 2025

July 24th marks Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) in 2025, the date when humanity’s demand on nature surpasses Earth’s capacity to replenish nature during the entire year.

Calculated by Global Footprint Network, the international sustainability organization that pioneered the Ecological Footprint, this date is based on the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts maintained by York University. Why it is earlier than last year is explained here. Earth Overshoot Day falling on July 24th means that humanity is currently using nature 1.8 times faster than Earths ecosystems can regenerate. This overshoot occurs because people emit more CO₂ than the biosphere can absorb, use more freshwater than is replenished, harvest more trees than can regrow, fish quicker than stocks replenish, etc. This overuse beyond what nature can renew inevitably depletes Earth’s natural capital. It compromises long-term resource security, especially for those who already struggle to access the resources needed to operate. EOD is the calculated illustrative calendar date on which humanity’s resource consumption for the year exceeds Earth’s capacity to regenerate those resources that year. The term “overshoot” represents the level by which human population’s demand overshoots the sustainable amount of biological resources regenerated on Earth. When viewed through an economic perspective, the annual Earth Overshoot Day represents the day by which the planet’s annual regenerative budget is spent, and humanity enters environmental deficit spending. Earth Overshoot Day is calculated by dividing the world biocapacity (the amount of natural resources regenerated by Earth that year), by the world ecological footprint (humanity’s consumption of Earth’s natural resources for that year), and multiplying by 365 (366 in leap years), the number of days in a year:

The report ‘From economy of occupation to economy of genocide‘ of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, Francesca Albanese, investigates the corporate machinery sustaining Israel’s settler-colonial project of displacement and replacement of the Palestinians in the occupied territory.

While political leaders and governments shirk their obligations, far too many corporate entities have profited from Israel’s economy of illegal occupation, apartheid and now, genocide. The complicity exposed by this report is just the tip of the iceberg; ending it will not happen without holding the private sector accountable, including its executives. International law recognizes varying degrees of responsibility – each requiring scrutiny and accountability, particularly in this case, where a people’s self-determination and very existence are at stake. This is a necessary step to end the genocide and dismantle the global system that has allowed it.

On Tuesday 15 July 2025, European Union (EU) foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels to decide whether to impose sanctions on Israel.

This is a crucial moment for the EU to draw a red line and stop pumping billions of euros into Israel’s economy, fuelling genocide and occupation. SOMO’s analysis of trade and foreign investment into and from Israel reveals how deeply intertwined the European and Israeli economies are. Based on this analysis, SOMO calls for the immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, along with a full arms embargo, extensive economic sanctions and corporate accountability. The EU is the largest investor in Israel worldwide, nearly twice as big as the United States (US). According to the most recent IMF data on foreign investment, EU member states held €72.1 billion in foreign investment in Israel in 2023, compared to €39.2 billion for the US. Israel itself has invested €65.9 billion in the EU, seven times as much as in the US (€8.8 billion). That makes the EU the main destination for Israeli investment. Despite Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and its unlawful occupation across the Occupied Palestinian Territory, the EU increased exports to Israel by €1 billion, standing at €25.5 billion in 2023 and €26.7 billion in 2024. The EU is Israel’s largest trading partner, and its total trade with Israel in 2024, including imports and exports, amounted to €42.6 billion. This is significantly more than the US, whose trade with Israel totalled €31.6 billion in the same year. Of all EU member states, the Netherlands is by far the largest investor in Israel and is responsible for two-thirds of EU investment in Israel. In fact, no other country worldwide has more investments in Israel. With €50 billion in investment held by Dutch companies in 2023, the Netherlands even tops the US. Conversely, the Netherlands is also the largest destination for Israeli investment, attracting six times as much investment as the US.

Mosquitoes can spread a deadly parasite that causes malaria, experts are using CRISPR to change the mosquito’s genome to stop this spread.

A team of researchers at University of California, San Diego, University of São Paulo, Johns Hopkins University, and University of California, Berkeley, have discovered a potential new tool in the fight against malaria. The results were described in a paper ‘Driving a protective allele of the mosquito FREP1 gene to combat malaria‘ published in the journal Nature.

Op Wereld Sjögren Dag wordt wereldwijd de geboortedag (23 juli 1899) van de Zweedse oogarts Henrik Sjögren herdacht, Sjögren was de ontdekker van de systeemziekte Syndroom van Sjögren en werd naamgever.

Het vaststellen van deze aandoening heeft veel patiënten geholpen die op zoek waren naar antwoorden op hun gezondheidsproblemen. Het is ook een bewustwordingsdag voor ons allen en geeft tevens alle patiënten die aan deze ziekte lijden of de symptomen hebben de aandacht die ze verdienen. Het Syndroom van Sjögren (Sjögren) is een systemische auto-immuunziekte waarbij vochtafscheidende klieren ontstoken raken en de slijmvliezen in de mond, de ogen en op alle andere plaatsen in het lichaam uitdrogen. Het Syndroom van Sjögren komt overal ter wereld voor en maakt geen onderscheid qua huidskleur of qua leeftijd. Bij een systeemziekte kunnen ontstekingen in gewrichten en in verschillende organen ontstaan. Een systeemziekte is een auto-immuunziekte, dit betekent dat afweercellen een ontstekingsreactie beginnen tegen het eigen lichaam. Op dit moment is er geen genezing voor Sjögren, maar een vroege diagnose en een goede behandeling zijn belangrijk om de ernstiger complicaties van de ziekte te voorkomen en tegelijkertijd de kwaliteit van leven van een patiënt te helpen verbeteren. Gemiddeld duurt het 2,8 jaar vanaf het moment dat een patiënt een behandeling voor zijn symptomen zoekt tot het ontvangen van een formele diagnose. In 2012, toen de diagnosetijd bijna zes jaar in beslag nam, lanceerde de SSF een BOLD 5-Year Breakthrough Goal: “In vijf jaar tijd de tijd met 50% te verkorten om Sjögren’s te diagnosticeren!” Dit doel werd bereikt in 2018.
