Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to help recognize, and celebrate, the importance recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet.

It is a day for the world to come together, and put the planet first. The mission is twofold:

  • To tell world leaders that recycling is simply too important not to be a global issue, and that a common, joined up approach to recycling is urgently needed.
  • To ask people across the planet to think resource, not waste, when it comes to the goods around us – until this happens we simply won’t award recycled goods the true value and repurpose they deserve.

World Water Day

World Water Day is an annual UN observance day (always on 22 March) that highlights the importance of freshwater.

The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. World Water Day is celebrated around the world with a variety of events. These can be educational, theatrical, musical or lobbying in nature. The day can also include campaigns to raise money for water projects. The first World Water Day, designated by the United Nations, was commemorated in 1993. Each year more and more countries celebrate World Water Day. UN-Water selects a theme for each year, the theme of World Water Day 2026 is ‘Where water flows, equality grows‘. The UN World Water Development Report is released each year around World Water Day.

Trumps oorlog: niet in onze naam!

Trump en Netanyahu willen dat Frankrijk, het VK, China en anderen meedoen met hun oorlog tegen Iran.

Stuur een duidelijke boodschap naar onze leiders: sleur ons niet mee in de chaos. Wij willen deze oorlog niet! Een paar dagen geleden zijn zeker 170 kinderen en leraren om het leven gekomen bij een luchtaanval op een meisjesschool in Iran. Onderzoek wijst uit dat de Verenigde Staten waarschijnlijk achter de aanval zitten. Trump zet nu wereldwijd leiders onder druk om mee te doen met zíjn oorlog en vraagt hen om oorlogsschepen te sturen om in de Straat van Hormuz te patrouilleren. Tot nu toe bieden het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Frankrijk, Japan, China en Zuid-Korea weerstand — maar hoelang nog? Een massaal, wereldwijd vredesprotest kan laten zien dat burgers deze oorlog niet willen. Dat kan een echt verschil maken. Teken en deel deze open brief — zodra onze oproep groot genoeg is, overhandigt Avaaz die direct aan invloedrijke leiders!

Aan onze regeringen,

Wij zijn burgers, werknemers, ouders, gepensioneerden en studenten.

Onze boodschap is duidelijk: laat Trump en Netanyahu ons niet meesleuren in hun illegale oorlog met Iran.

We roepen u op om:

  • Elke vorm van betrokkenheid bij of steun voor de oorlog tegen Iran te weigeren;
  • Prioriteit te geven aan diplomatie, vredesopbouw en mensenrechten.

Echte veiligheid komt voort uit respect voor het internationaal recht, gerechtigheid en waardigheid.

Kom op voor vrede. Zeg ‘NEE’ tegen Trump.

World Day for Glaciers 2026

World Day for Glaciers, declared by the UN in its resolution A/RES/77/158 along with the Year of Glaciers 2025, aims to raise global awareness about the critical role of glaciers, snow and ice in the climate system and the hydrological cycle, and the economic, social and environmental impacts of the impending changes in the Earth’s cryosphere, as well as to share best practices and knowledge in this regard and in addressing issues related to accelerated melting of glaciers and its consequences.

Glaciers are nature’s frozen sentinels, vast rivers of ice and snow that carve the Earth, silently bearing witness to the passage of time and the shifting rhythms of our planet. They are essential to Earth’s ecosystem, acting as critical freshwater reservoirs and indicators of the planet’s health. They provide water for millions of people, regulate sea levels, and support biodiversity. Yet, these frozen giants are under threat. Rising global temperatures are causing glaciers to retreat at an alarming rate, leading to water scarcity, rising sea levels, and increasing the chances of natural disasters like floods or landslides. These cascading changes jeopardize ecosystems, human livelihoods, and economies around the world. To address this urgent challenge, ambitious action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is essential. On World Day for Glaciers, UNESCO calls for global action to protect glaciers and their crucial role in sustaining life on Earth for future generations. With over 2 billion people relying on glacier and snowmelt for freshwater—and projections showing that one-third of glacier sites could disappear by 2050—raising awareness and taking action to protect these vital ecosystems has never been more urgent. Through its Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) and the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), UNESCO connects cutting-edge science with practical solutions to preserve glaciers around the world. The Organization is also leading the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025-2034) to boost research and drive urgent action to protect Earth’s frozen areas.

Roze Filmdagen – Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival 2026

De Roze Filmdagen is een elfdaags filmfestival waarop films, korte films en documentaires met een LGBTQ-gerelateerd thema worden vertoond, het festival vindt sinds 1996 jaarlijks in maart plaats in Het Ketelhuis op het terrein van de Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam en wordt georganiseerd door de Stichting Pink Media.

Er worden zowel jury- als publieksprijzen voor diverse categorieën speelfilms, korte films en documentaires uitgereikt. Het festival is sinds 2013 een nominerend festival voor de Iris Prize (Cardiff).

The International Day of Digital Learning, designated by UNESCO Member States in 2023, is an occasion to celebrate and share information about the many ways schools, teachers, learners and families are using digital technologies to improve education in line with national and international goals, while simultaneously taking steps to mitigate the considerable risks and challenges that these technologies introduce.

In 2026, International Day for Digital Learning focuses on building digital futures for public education. This theme stems from a simple question: Where are the digital spaces and resources to support public education online? Far too often, the answer is nowhere. In innumerable national and sub-national contexts, students, teachers and parents do not know where to find reliable digital resources to support learning and teaching. Fortunately, a growing number of education systems, in high and low income contexts alike, are making investments to extend public education into online and digital environments. These investments complement and enrich the essential work that happens in schools and with teachers. The 2026 International Day for Digital Learning is an invitation to showcase where and how countries, provinces, and school districts are building – and using – digital commons to strengthen public education and improve its outcomes. In line with the 2026 theme, UNESCO, together with UNICEF and the  International Telecommunication Union (ITU), will launch the Charter for Public Digital Learning Platforms on the International Day. The UNESCO-UNICEF-ITU Charter puts forward normative guidance to help public authorities steer the design, governance and continuous refinement of public digital learning platforms. Join UNESCO in celebrating the International Day by bringing renewed attention to efforts to ensure that public education is supported digitally and virtually, as well as in the vital physical and social spaces of schools.

Landelijke demonstratie en manifest tegen racisme en fascisme 2026

Op 21 maart 2026 wordt in Amsterdam gedemonstreerd tegen racisme en fascisme, om een krachtig geluid te laten horen tegen extreemrechts.

De democratische rechtsstaat wordt niet in één klap afgeschaft. Zij wordt langzaam uitgehold. Rechten verdwijnen stukje bij beetje. Demonstreren wordt ingeperkt. Kritiek wordt gecriminaliseerd. Racisme schuift van de marge naar het midden en wordt beleid. Tegelijkertijd worden zorg, onderwijs en betaalbaar wonen afgebroken. Ongelijkheid groeit. Uitsluiting wordt genormaliseerd. Dit is geen crisis en geen ongeluk. Dit is een politieke richting.
