In april 2018 riep de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties 3 juni uit tot Wereldfietsdag, de resolutie A/72/L.43, A/72/L.43/Add.1 en 72/272 voor Wereldfietsdag erkent “het unieke karakter, de lange levensduur en de veelzijdigheid van de fiets, die al twee eeuwen in gebruik is, en dat het een eenvoudig, betaalbaar, betrouwbaar, schoon en milieuvriendelijk duurzaam vervoermiddel is.”
