Since October 1998, the American Geosciences Institute has organized the Earth Science Week, a worldwide event to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth.

Our energy future calls for navigating complex choices about how we power our homes, businesses, and transportation. These decisions require a deep understanding of their environmental, social, and economic impacts, and how they align with our personal and societal values. 2026 Earth Science Week theme, “Critical Minerals for a Thriving Society”, highlights how critical minerals support essential needs and how the development of new technologies can affect which minerals are considered critical and how geoscience knowledge is essential for identifying, mining, refining, transporting, and using them responsibly. Geoscientists also address how mineral use impacts Earth’s systems, including landscapes, water and air quality, and the global carbon cycle.
