The annual Day of Action for Rivers is a day dedicated to solidarity – when diverse communities around the world come together with one voice to say that our rivers matter.
That communities having access to clean and flowing water matters. That everyone should have a say in decisions that affect their water and their lives. That it’s our time to stand up for these rights, now more than ever. The theme of 2026 International Day of Action for Rivers is ‘Protect Rivers, Protect People’. At a time of intensifying climate impacts and global crises, when both people and planet face enormous threats to life and liberty, it is our collective responsibility to protect our shared waters. This has never been more urgent than it is today. Rivers are life-giving systems. Without them, our health, food security, livelihoods, and communities are at risk. We cannot survive or thrive without healthy rivers. When rivers are polluted, over-extracted, diverted, or blocked by destructive infrastructure, it is vulnerable communities and river ecosystems that suffer first.
