Geodiversity Day 2025

6 oktober 2025

Geodiversity Day

Recognizing the importance of geoscience in solving major challenges that humanity is facing today, UNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed 6 October as International Geodiversity Day (41 C/Resolution 24).

Despite the multitude of services that geodiversity provides, most people are not aware of how dependent on it we are as a society. This is why we need to promote a better understanding of the Earth’s dynamic processes, so that citizens can make informed policy choices that will foster a more sustainable society. Geological diversity refers to the natural portion of the planet that is not alive, both at the surface and in the planet’s interior. By geodiversity, we mean the Earth’s minerals, rocks, fossils, soils, sediments, landforms, topography and hydrological features such as rivers and lakes. The term ‘geodiversity’ also spans the processes that create and modify these features. Exceptional examples of geodiversity are preserved in UNESCO Global Geoparks around the world.
