#TrainlifeEU European Citizens’ Initiative : Fast, convenient, affordable, and above all climate-friendly transportation for all Europeans
25 maart 2026 - 25 maart 2027
Make travel by train a true alternative to aviation by creating a strong continental network and organization and removing imbalances in the market.
This is an investment in our common future: it promotes a transportation sector that is economically fair, socially just, and ecologically sustainable. The initative rests on three concrete demands that would transform the cross-border travel industry across Europe. The demands:
Improve, harmonize and enhance cross-border rail infrastructure.
Unified ticketing and booking system, no more dependency across rail way organizations. (cyclists included).
Expand night train routes and high-speed rail lines.
The proposed measures:
Introduction of an EU-wide aviation fuel tax (kerosene excise duty)
Removal of VAT exemptions and the introduction of fair pricing
Allocation of revenues to a strong European rail organization with far-reaching authority
A European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) is a unique tool of participatory democracy that allows EU citizens to directly infuence European legislation. When one million citizens from at least 7 member states (granted a minimum threshold per memberstate) sign an initiative, the European Commision is legally obliged to examine the proposal and respond to it.
