Purpose of the Antarctic Activity Week (A.A.W.) is to increase world wide interest around Antarctic Continent and its related matters, with the aim of staying close to the researchers and personnel who are spending their time away from home and families, studying the Antarctic life and its secrets.
Addition purpose is to share what Nations and Organizations are doing to protect this still non contaminated corner of the world, to share a message of peace WW. Antarctic Activity Week, is celebrating every years on last week of February, in concomitance with the 22nd of February, when the Argentines rejoice the Argentine’s Antarctica Day. This invitation, is addressed to all Radio Amateurs (OMs & SWLs) around the world, to the Clubs and Organizations as well as other important groups and individual operators WW who would like to join and share with us, this initiative. All stations will qualify for WAP ASEA (Antarctic Special events Award). Again our intention is to draw your attention to the Antarctic Continent, and AAW is the unique event WW where Hams (in any corners of the world, and not necessarily in Antarctica) wish to celebrate and improve Worldwide interest around the Icy Continent.

Antarctica Day is an international holiday recognizing the anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959 and is celebrated on December 1st each year.
Along with Midwinter Day, it is one of Antarctica’s two principal holidays. Antarctica Day was established by the Foundation for the Good Governance of International Spaces in 2010 as a way to highlight the international cooperation that makes governance of the continent possible and to encourage educators to incorporate Antarctica in their curriculum. Antarctica Day was created following the Antarctic Treaty Summit in 2009 on the 50th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty. As a relatively recent holiday, Antarctica Day doesn’t have any longstanding traditions. Unlike Midwinter Day, Antarctica Day is more widely celebrated off the continent than on it. Antarctic organizations based outside of the continent, such as National Antarctic Programs or the government of Antarctic gateway cities, will often observe the holiday with public programming such as talks or movie screenings. Individuals with professional or personal interest in Antarctica also celebrate Antarctica Day. Some consume Antarctica-related media, such as documentaries or podcasts. Others make social media posts regarding Antarctica. Flag flying is another common way people observe the holiday.
