De berg is van noord-oost naar zuid-west langgerekt en het hoogste punt is ongeveer 385 meter hoog. Daarmee is het de hoogste berg op Reykjanes. De Fagradalsfjall is ontstaan tijdens een ijstijd bij een eruptie onder een gletsjer. Een kleine lavalaag aan de bovenzijde geeft aan dat deze een klein stukje boven uit de gletsjer uitkwam. De berg is geclassificeerd als een tafelberg. De naam Fagradalsfjall wordt ook wel voor het hele gebergte gebruikt. Het Fagradalsfjallgebergte omvat ook bergen als Langihryggur\, Stóri-hrútur\, Borgarfjall\, Litli-hrútur\, Kistufell\, Merahdalahnúkar en de dalen Meradalir\, Geldingadalir en Nátthaggi. Onderaan de oostflank van de berg ontstond met de eerste uitbarsting op 19 maart 2021 in het dal Geldingadalir een vulkanisch systeem en lavaveld dat Fagradalshraun heet. Op maandagavond 18 december 2023 barstte de Fagradalshraun uit na weken van intense aardbevingsactiviteit\, zo meldt het IJslandse meteorologische instituut (IMO). \nDe vierde uitbarsting in drie jaar (maart 2021\, augustus 2022 en juli 2023) vond plaats bij Grindavík\, zo’n 40 kilometer ten zuidwesten van Reykjavik. De bijna 4000 inwoners werden geëvacueerd\, en het nabijgelegen Blue Lagoon kuuroord was gesloten. Ondanks het verhoogde alarmniveau en code rood voor de luchtvaart\, meldde de lokale politie dat er geen direct gevaar was voor de bevolking. Toeristen werden echter gewaarschuwd het gebied niet te betreden terwijl hulpverleners de situatie beoordelen. Op sociale media waren beelden te zien van lavafonteinen die felgele en oranje kleuren tegen de nachtelijke hemel afstaken. De vulkanische activiteit die in november 2023 het dorp Grindavík bedreigde en een maand later uitbarstte komt (anders dan in sommige media wordt beweerd) niet van dit systeem maar van het tien kilometer westelijker gelegen vulkaansysteem Eldvörp-Svartsengi dat op sommige kaarten bij het nog westelijker gelegen Reykjanes-systeem wordt getrokken. \n\nIn het Fagradalsfjallvulkaan-systeem heeft op 14 januari 2024 opnieuw een uitbarsting plaatsgevonden. Omdat er rekening werd gehouden met een nieuwe uitbarsting was het vissersdorp met zo’n 4000 inwoners in de nacht voor de nieuwe uitbarsting opnieuw geëvacueerd. In de uren voor de evacuatie werden al aardschokken gevoeld. Onder het dorp heeft zich op een paar honderd meter diepte magma opgehoopt. Er werd rekening gehouden met het feit dat er opnieuw magma omhoog zou kunnen komen. De uitbarsting nu is begonnen in Sunhnúk\, iets ten noorden van Grindavík. Bij de vorige uitbarsting werd het dorpje nog gespaard\, toch meldt RUV dat inmiddels het eerste huis door de toestromende lava is bereikt. Na 13:30 werd bekend dat er bij het dorpje een nieuwe scheur is ontstaan. Volgens de autoriteiten kan lava uit die scheur een probleem vormen voor Grindavík. The epicenter was about 23 km northeast of Awash as the tremor occurred at the depth of 10 km and the shaking was felt across central Ethiopia. Over 30 homes collapsed in Afar while thousands fled to neighboring area as refuge. Pubic officials responded by shutdown of transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to investigate the damage and power outages were likely to be measured. On 13 October\, a magnitude of 4.6 quake happened in Oromia Region at around 07:37. The shaking affected throughout central and eastern Ethiopia\, such as southern Afar\, southern Amhara\, and central Oromia regions\, northwestern Somali Region\, and the capital Addis Ababa. Also on 16 October\, an earthquake was observed in Metehara area in Oromia at 23:11 local time with 4.8 magnitude registered.
