SUMMARY:Pavel Krisevich: Russian Prison Art [postponed thanks to Dutch authorities]
DESCRIPTION:Artist Pavel Krisevich was held in Russia’s prison system for 3\,5 years after staging performance art in support of political prisoners in Russia. Last year\, Krisevich was released and will now speak at De Balie. \nThe performance art of Pavel Krisevich is as spectacular as it is fearless. He tied himself to a large cross like a Jesus figure in front of the headquarters of the FSB\, Russia’s secret service\, with a burning bonfire of files of political prisoners beneath him. In 2021\, Krisevich staged a suicide on Red Square in Moscow to draw attention to the abominable situation of political prisoners in Russia. It earned him a five-year prison sentence. From his cell\, Krisevich bravely continued making art; using his own blood as material\, he portrayed the bleak life in prison. Work from this series was previously shown at De Balie during the exhibition Artists Against the Kremlin. At De Balie\, Krisevich will speak about the power of art as resistance against an all-dominating system. He is joined by journalist Paul Alexander\, whose new book ‘Bloed\, as en tandpasta’ portrays the life of political prisoners in Russia’s penal system through Krisevich’s prison art. How does the current prison system resemble the Soviet Camps? And what drives the political prisoners in their virtually hopeless struggle against an all-powerful regime? \nDe Balie regrets having to cancel this program. The Dutch authorities are currently unwilling to grant Pavel Krisevich a visa\, due to concerns that he might apply for asylum. De Balie strongly protests the Dutch government’s refusal to grant a temporary visa to an artist. We are looking for an alternative date to invite Pavel Krisevich. \nLinks:\nPavel Krisevich: Russian Prison Art \nRussische protestkunstenaar en voormalig politiek gevangene krijgt geen visum en moet lezing in De Balie afzeggen

SUMMARY:Bypassing the Blockade: How Hong Kong Feeds European Technology Into Russia’s War in Ukraine - publication
DESCRIPTION:Researchers at the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation identify Hong Kong as a key hub in the illicit trade of Western military technology to Russia. \nTraders in Hong Kong and mainland China are supplying Russia’s war machine with European electronics and military technology\, exploiting loopholes in international sanctions\, according to the report ‘Bypassing the Blockade: How Hong Kong Feeds European Technology Into Russia’s War in Ukraine‘. Researchers at the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation\, an advocacy group\, found that the merchants that have not been sanctioned have enabled hundreds of semiconductors\, sensors\, electrical connectors\, microchip components and other devices produced by Western specialized firms to reach the battlefield in Ukraine. Many of these products\, including some designed by the Dutch NXP Semiconductor and the German Infineon Technologies\, are used to build cars\, aircraft parts and other civilian purposes\, but also used to make drones and missiles. \nLinks:\nBypassing the Blockade \nHong Kong firms feed European tech to Russia’s war in Ukraine\, report says

SUMMARY:Disrupted\, Throttled\, and Blocked: State Censorship\, Control\, and Increasing Isolation of Internet Users in Russia - publication
DESCRIPTION:The report\, “Disrupted\, Throttled\, and Blocked: State Censorship\, Control\, and Increasing Isolation of Internet Users in Russia”\, documents the impact of the government’s increasing technological capacities and control over the country’s internet infrastructure. \nHuman Rights Watch (HRW) found that this allows the authorities to carry out more widespread and nontransparent blocking and throttling of unwanted websites and censorship circumvention tools\, as well as internet disruptions and shutdowns under the pretext of ensuring public safety and national security. \nLinks:\nRussia: Internet Blocking\, Disruptions and Increasing Isolation

SUMMARY:Roadmap towards ending Russian energy imports - publication
DESCRIPTION:The REPowerEU Roadmap\, presented today by the European Commission\, paves the way to ensure the EU’s full energy independence from Russia. \nThe EU will end its dependency on Russian energy by stopping the import of Russian gas and oil and phasing out Russian nuclear energy\, while ensuring stable energy supplies and prices across the Union. Despite the significant progress achieved under the REPowerEU Plan and via sanctions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, in 2024 the EU saw a rebound in Russian gas imports. More coordinated actions are therefore needed\, as the EU’s overdependency on Russian energy imports is a security threat. The roadmap sets out a gradual removal of Russian oil\, gas and nuclear energy from the EU markets which will take place in a coordinated and secure manner as we advance our energy transition. The measures have been designed to preserve the security of the EU’s energy supply while limiting any impact on prices and markets. As of 2025\, the global LNG supplies are foreseen to grow rapidly\, while gas demand will decrease. With the full implementation of the energy transition framework and the Action Plan for Affordable Energy\, the EU is expected to replace up to 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas by 2030\, which means a decrease in demand by 40-50 bcm by 2027. At the same time\, LNG capacities are expected to increase by around 200 bcm by 2028\, which is five times more than current EU imports of Russian gas. This roadmap will be followed by legislative proposals by the Commission in June\, 2025. \nLinks:\nRoadmap towards ending Russian energy imports \nEU sets 2027 as deadline to phase out all Russian energy\, including LNG \nEuropa\, breek los van TrumpGas! – petitie

SUMMARY:Russia’s ‘Ghost Detainees’: The Investigation That Cost Viktoriia Roshchyna Her Life - publication
DESCRIPTION:Forbidden Stories investigated the detention and death of Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna\, which came on the heels of a reporting trip to Zaporizhzhia aimed at telling the stories of Ukrainian civilians unlawfully held by Russia. \nViktoriia Roshchyna was pronounced dead in Russian captivity in October 2024\, after being secretly held for months in Russian-occupied Ukraine and a Russian prison. In February 2025\, her body was repatriated. The body of Viktoriia Roshchyna was returned to Ukraine in February 2025; the body showed marks of torture and was returned without some organs. Forbidden Stories was able to consult with two of Viktoriia’s sources in Russian-held Ukraine\, and with her editor\, who confirmed she had traveled to Zaporizhzhia to investigate the torture of civilians in informal detention centers. Viktoriia had begun to list the names of Russian occupiers responsible for detention and torture\, including FSB agents. \nLinks:\nRussia’s ‘Ghost Detainees’: The Investigation That Cost Viktoriia Roshchyna Her Life \nThe Viktoriia project

SUMMARY:Crocus City Hall attack / Aanslag Crocus City Hall concertzaal Moskou 2024
DESCRIPTION:On 22 March 2024\, at around 20:00 MSK (UTC+3)\, a coordinated attack occurred at the Crocus City Hall music venue in Krasnogorsk\, a Russian city on the western edge of Moscow. \nOn 22 March 2024\, the Russian band Picnic was scheduled to play a sold-out show at Crocus City Hall. Before the band began their performance\, four masked gunmen in combat fatigues opened fire using AK-style assault rifles and carried out a mass shooting on the people gathered at the venue and used incendiary devices to set the venue ablaze.  Investigators said the attack had killed at least 137 people\, and more than 182 concertgoers were injured due to gunshot wounds and “poisoning” related to the fire.\, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in Russia since the Beslan school siege in 2004 and the deadliest terrorist attack in Moscow’s history. Russia’s Foreign Ministry called the incident a terrorist attack. The Islamic State – Khorasan Province (IS-KP or ISIS-K)\, a South–Central Asia-based regional affiliate of the Islamic State\, claimed responsibility in a statement released through the Telegram channel of Amaq News Agency shortly after the attack. Russian state media and officials\, including President Vladimir Putin\, have alleged Ukrainian involvement in the attack\, but have not provided any evidence\, and Ukraine has denied any involvement. Russian President Vladimir Putin in his first public statement calls attack to be a “barbaric terrorist act” and informed that all four gunmen have been arrested. Further\, he declared Sunday 24 March a day of national mourning. IS–KP claimed responsibility for the attack shortly after in a statement released by Amaq News  Agency via Telegram\, stating that the attackers “retreated to their bases safely”. The group is a regional branch of the Islamic State\, an international terrorist group active in South-Central Asia\, primarily Afghanistan. U.S. officials stated they had intelligence indicating that IS–KP had been planning an attack on the city. Colin Clarke from the independent Soufan Center think tank explained that Russia has been a focus of the group for some time\, saying: “[IS–KP] has been fixated on Russia for the past two years\, frequently criticizing Putin in its propaganda.” On 23 March\, IS–KP released a photo of the attackers. Investigators detained 11 people in relation to the attack\, including four suspects\, who were charged with terrorism on 24 March. \nLinks:\nAanslag Moskou

SUMMARY:Russische presidentsverkiezingen 2024

SUMMARY:Opposition to Vladimir Putin in Russia / Protesten tegen (regime van) Poetin
DESCRIPTION:Action in memory of Alexei Navalny at the monument to victims of political repression in St. Petersburg on 16 February 2024\nOpposition to the government of President Vladimir Putin in Russia\, commonly referred to as the Russian opposition\, can be divided between the parliamentary opposition parties in the State Duma and the various non-systemic opposition organizations. \nWhile the former are largely viewed as being more or less loyal to the government and Putin\, the latter oppose the government and are mostly unrepresented in government bodies. According to Russian NGO Levada Center\, about 15% of the Russian population disapproved of Putin in the beginning of 2023. The “systemic opposition” is mainly composed of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF)\, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR)\, A Just Russia – For Truth (SRZP)\, New People and other minor parties; these political groups\, while claiming to be in opposition\, generally support the government’s policies. Major political parties considered to be part of the non-systemic opposition include Yabloko and the People’s Freedom Party (PARNAS)\, along with the unregistered party Russia of the Future and Libertarian Party of Russia (LPR). Other notable opposition groups included the Russian Opposition Coordination Council (KSO) (2012–2013) and The Other Russia (2006–2011)\, as well as various non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Their supporters vary in political ideology\, ranging from liberals\, socialists\, and anarchists\, to Russian nationalists. They are mainly unified by their opposition to Putin and government corruption. However\, a lack of unity within the opposition has also hindered its standing. Opposition figures claim that a number of laws have been passed and other measures taken by Putin’s government to prevent them from having any electoral success. \nLinks:\nTijdens grote demonstraties blijkt hoe bang de Russische autoriteiten zijn voor Navalny’s beweging / Court ruled that Navalny’s three and a half year suspended sentence was to be replaced with a prison sentence / Meerdere nieuwssites berichtten dat Navalny naar een ‘ziekenhuis’ wordt overgeplaatst / Honderden betogers gearresteerd bij pro-Navalny-bijeenkomsten / Leider oppositiegroepering uit vliegtuig gehaald in Sint-Petersburg / VS en VK halen uit naar Rusland om Navalny / Authorities’ Treatment of Navalny is Escalating the Protests \n#UkraineRussianWar #UkraineRussiaCrisis Russisch-Oekraïense oorlog / Russisch-Oekraïens conflict (2021-…) \nDeath and funeral of Alexei Navalny \nProtesters in Moscow chant «Down with Putin» and clap\, passing cars beep in support \n2024 Russian presidential election \nArtists against the Kremlin – exhibition
