DESCRIPTION:To raise awareness about the Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr)\, the United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed February 10 as the Day of the Arabian Leopard in resolution 77/295. \nClassified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List\, the rapid disappearance of the Arabian leopard represents a major setback for biodiversity conservation in its native region\, underscoring the urgency of addressing the nature crisis that threatens ecosystems worldwide. By celebrating this Day\, the UN ultimately seeks to restore the Arabian leopard as a flagship species for conservation and sustainability in its native region while emphasizing the critical role of biodiversity in maintaining the health and resilience of our planet’s ecosystems. The UN resolution recognizes the vital importance of the Arabian leopard to the Arabian ecosystem and welcomes cooperative regional initiatives to protect it and other threatened species. The resolution calls for enhanced conservation efforts by Arabian range states\, relevant stakeholders like NGOs and communities\, and UN agencies. Observing this International Day will promote much-needed attention for the Arabian leopard and galvanize public engagement in conservation initiatives aimed at restoring leopard populations and other endangered species for the benefit of ecosystems. \nThe Arabian leopard is a critically endangered leopard subspecies that inhabits the Arabian Peninsula\, it is one of the smallest leopard subspecies\, with an average weight of 30-40 kg for males and 25-35 kg for females. Its fur is pale and buff-colored with rosettes that are small and closely spaced. The Arabian leopard has a very limited distribution\, being found only in a few isolated pockets of habitat in Saudi Arabia\, Oman\, Yemen\, and the United Arab Emirates. Estimates suggest there may be fewer than 200 Arabian leopards left in the wild. Threats to the species include urbanization\, farming\, overgrazing by livestock\, poaching\, and the illegal wildlife trade. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection\, restoration of natural prey populations\, and public education programs to reduce human-leopard conflict. The celebration of the year\, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)\, increased the public awareness of the nutritional and environmental benefits of pulses as part of sustainable food production. Building on the success of the International Year of Pulses and recognizing their potential to further achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, with particular relevance to Sustainable Development Goals 1\, 2\, 3\, 5\, 8\, 12\, 13 and 15\, Burkina Faso proposed the observance of World Pulses Day. Pulses\, also known as legumes\, are the edible seeds of leguminous plants cultivated for food. Dried beans\, lentils and peas are the most commonly known and consumed types of pulses. Staples dishes and cuisines from across the world feature pulses\, from hummus in the Mediterranean (chick peas)\, to a traditional full English breakfast (baked navy beans) to Indian dal (peas or lentils). Pulses do not include crops that are harvested green (e.g. green peas\, green beans)—these are classified as vegetable crops. The Commission concluded that the transaction would raise no competition concerns in the European Economic Area (‘EEA’). \nGoogle offers cloud infrastructure through Google Cloud Platform. Google also offers cloud security services to its cloud users and\, to a limited extent\, to users of other cloud infrastructure providers. Wiz offers a so-called cloud-native application protection platform. The platform provides cloud customers\, such as large European businesses\, with a single security platform to protect their applications against cybersecurity threats across different cloud environments. Civil society organisations across Europe seriously regret the European Commission’s decision to unconditionally clear Google’s proposed acquisition of Wiz. DESCRIPTION:De Europese 112-dag wordt jaarlijks op 11 februari (11-2) georganiseerd\, is in 2009 ingevoerd door de Europese Unie en heeft tot doel de bekendheid met en het passend gebruik van het pan-Europees noodnummer 112 te bevorderen. \nSinds 1991 bestaat\, naast de nationale alarmnummers\, het Europese alarmnummer 112: een uniform telefoonnummer in alle lidstaten van de Europese Unie. Sinds december 2008 zijn deze noodoproepdiensten bereikbaar vanaf alle vaste en mobiele netwerken en kan 112 gratis gebeld worden. Er vinden elk jaar acties plaats rondom de Europese 112-dag. Sommige zijn georganiseerd door politici en overheidsfunctionarissen\, andere door reddingsdiensten\, brandweerlieden en niet-gouvernementele organisaties. In 2018 werd in minstens 23 lidstaten\, aangevuld met Georgië\, Kosovo en IJsland\, tegelijk een hele reeks evenementen gewijd aan de gemeenschappelijke Europese noodoproep. In Duitsland werd mevrouw Edelgard Huber von Gersdorff (112 jaar) ere-patrones van de campagne “One Europe – one number!”. DESCRIPTION:De vastgelopen woningmarkt kan alleen worden vlotgetrokken met sectoroverstijgend beleid en expliciete keuzes\, in het rapport Perspectief op de woningmarkt laat het Centraal Planbureau (CPB) zien dat maatregelen in één deel van de woningmarkt doorwerken in andere sectoren. \nExtra steunmaatregelen kunnen de krapte vergroten en betaalbaar bouwen vraagt onvermijdelijk om keuzes over locatie en subsidie. De problemen op de woningmarkt zijn groot en breed voelbaar. Steeds meer huishoudens hebben geen woning\, wonen te duur of zitten vast in een huis dat niet past bij hun levensfase. Ondanks deze brede maatschappelijke zorg blijft het moeilijk voor beleidsmakers deze problemen op te lossen. Het CPB ontwikkelde daarom een Perspectief op de woningmarkt: een analytisch denkkader waarin het CPB omschrijft hoe de verdeling van woonruimte en het ontstaan van woningaanbod samenhangen\, en hoe overheidsbeleid deze processen beïnvloedt. De publicatie is bedoeld om structuur aan te brengen in het debat over de woningmarkt en om beleidskeuzes en hun gevolgen beter te kunnen duiden. Daarbij doet het CPB vier aanbevelingen voor het woningmarktbeleid. \n\nBeschouw de woningmarkt in samenhang: De positie van huishoudens op de woningmarkt hangt sterk samen met hun toegang tot sociale huur\, vrije huur en koop. Deze sectoren beïnvloeden elkaar: wie binnenkomt in een gereguleerd of gesubsidieerd segment stijgt op de woningladder\, maar anderen komen hierdoor onbedoeld in de knel. Zo leidt de Wet betaalbare huur tot minder huurwoningen en benadeelt daarmee ook huishoudens die geen woning kunnen kopen. Effectief woningmarktbeleid vereist daarom om een sectoroverstijgende benadering.\nBouw voordelen voor insiders af: Het helpen van woningzoekenden of andere aandachtsgroepen vraagt niet automatisch om nieuwe steunmaatregelen. Extra ondersteuning vergroot de vraag naar schaarse woonruimte en verhoogt de druk op de markt. Omdat veel insiders al profiteren van voordelen\, ligt het meer voor de hand deze af te bouwen. Dat verbetert de kansen van outsiders en vermindert de krapte.\nKies waar we betaalbaar willen bouwen: Buiten de stad kunnen er makkelijker betaalbare woningen worden gebouwd dan binnen de stad. Lagere inkomens vinden dan wel een woning\, maar vaker op een minder gunstige plek. Steden worden daarmee minder toegankelijk voor lagere inkomens. Met overheidssubsidie kunnen er ook op aantrekkelijke\, binnenstedelijke locaties betaalbare woningen worden gebouwd. Maar subsidiering zal de vraag naar stedelijke woonruimte verder aanwakkeren.\nMaak de woningmarkt flexibeler: De woningvraag verandert sneller dan het aanbod en is vaak moeilijk te voorspellen. Omdat demografische ontwikkelingen onzeker zijn\, en in het verleden ook onderschat zijn\, is flexibiliteit cruciaal. Zolang de reactie op veranderende vraagomstandigheden traag blijft\, blijft de woningmarkt kwetsbaar voor tekorten. DESCRIPTION:Charles Robert Darwin (*Shrewsbury (Shropshire)\, 12 februari 1809 – +Downe (Kent)\, 19 april 1882) was een Engelse autodidact op het gebied van natuurlijke historie\, biologie en geologie. \nDarwin ontleent zijn roem aan zijn theorie dat evolutie van soorten wordt gedreven door natuurlijke selectie. Het bestaan van evolutie werd omstreeks 1850 al door een groot deel van de wetenschappelijke gemeenschap geaccepteerd. De acceptatie van natuurlijke selectie als aandrijvend mechanisme liet langer op zich wachten\, maar is tegenwoordig onomstreden. Darwin werd gelovig opgevoed en opgeleid volgens de filosofie van de toen in Engeland gangbare natuurlijke theologie\, die religie en wetenschap wilde verenigen. Dankzij de waarnemingen en ontdekkingen die hij in de loop van zijn leven deed ging hij echter steeds meer twijfelen zowel aan deze gangbare ideeën over soortvorming als aan zijn persoonlijke geloof. Tijdens een onderzoeksreis met het schip de Beagle (1831-1836) bezocht Darwin Zuid-Amerika\, Australië\, het zuiden van Afrika en diverse eilandengroepen in de Grote en Indische Oceaan. \nOp al deze plekken bestudeerde hij de plaatselijke dieren\, planten\, fossielen en geologie. Ze hebben eten\, drinken en slaapzakken meegenomen\, we blijven hier tot het kabinet zegt: we zetten een streep door de vakantievluchten. De natuur\, het klimaat en ook heel veel mensen in de wijde omtrek krijgen hier last van en zitten helemaal niet te wachten op dit vliegveld. Zeker voor D66 is het regelrecht kiezersbedrog: het niet openen van Lelystad Airport stond letterlijk in het verkiezingsprogramma. We eisen dat het nieuwe kabinet dit besluit terugdraait en definitief een streep door Lelystad Airport zet. Het lijkt een no-brainer om geen nieuw vliegveld te openen. Maar er gebeurt wel meer niet wat mij erg logisch lijkt (bijvoorbeeld rijke vervuilers belasten). Dus we moeten ons samen weer uitspreken tegen Lelystad Airport. Spreek je via de petitie ‘Zet een streep door Lelystad Airport‘ ook uit tegen een nieuw vliegveld. \nNa 36 uur is vrijdag 13 februari 2026 de actie op Lelystad Airport beëindigd. De activisten hielden anderhalve dag stand in het hoofdgebouw om een glasheldere boodschap af te geven aan de nieuwe coalitie: zet een definitieve streep door de opening van dit vliegveld. Die sabbat begint echter op vrijdagmiddag 18:00 en omvat in de westerse tijdsopvatting de nacht van vrijdag de 13e. In de joodse tijdsopvatting eindigde de dag echter met de avond\, zodat de vrijdag er niets mee te maken had. Volgens het Bijbelboek Exodus stierven in die nacht alle eerstgeborenen van mens en dier.\nEen andere verklaring is dat vrijdag de dag is waarop Jezus werd gekruisigd. Als die dag dan ook nog samenvalt met het ongeluksgetal 13\, moet deze dag volgens het volksgeloof extra ongeluk veroorzaken.\nDe vrijdagen kunnen ook een kwade naam gekregen hebben omdat de Romeinen op die dag door doodvonnissen voltrokken. DESCRIPTION:World Radio Day is an observance day held annually on 13 February to celebrate radio as a medium. It was proclaimed on 3 November 2011 by UNESCO’s 36th General Conference after originally being proposed by the Kingdom of Spain. \nFollowing a request from the Spanish Radio Academy on 20 September 2010\, Spain proposed that the UNESCO Executive Board include an agenda item on the proclamation of a World Radio Day. UNESCO’s Executive Board approved the agenda item in its provisional agenda for the proclamation of a “World Radio Day” on 29 September 2011. UNESCO carried out a wide consultation in 2011 with diverse stakeholders\, such as broadcasting associations\, UN agencies\, funds and programmes\, relevant NGOs\, foundations and bilateral development agencies\, as well as UNESCO Permanent Delegations and National Commissions for UNESCO. Among the answers\, 91% were in favour of the project\, including official support from the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU)\, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU)\, the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB)\, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU)\, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)\, the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB)\, the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA)\, the Organización de Telecomunicaciones Ibeoramericanas (OTI)\, BBC\, URTI\, Vatican Radio\, etc. The results of this consultation are available in UNESCO’s document 187 EX/13. The Board recommended to the UNESCO 36th session of the General Conference that it proclaim a World Radio Day at its 36th session\, and that this day be celebrated by UNESCO on 13 February\, the anniversary of the day that the United Nations established the United Nations Radio in 1946. \nIt also invited all United Nations Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations\, professional associations and broadcasting unions\, as well as civil society\, including non-governmental organizations and individuals\, to duly celebrate World Radio Day\, in the way that each considers most adequate. The board further requested that UNESCO’s Director-General bring the resolution to the attention of the Secretary-General of the United Nations\, so that World Radio Day could be endorsed by the General Assembly and celebrated by the whole system. The matter was subsequently treated by UNESCO’s General Conference\, which adopted resolution contained in the file 36 C/63. World Radio Day was thus unanimously proclaimed by all Member States of UNESCO in November 2011. In December 2012\, The General Assembly of the UN endorsed the proclamation of World Radio Day\, thereby becoming a day to be celebrated by all UN agencies\, funds and programmes and their partners. DESCRIPTION:Despite substantial public health efforts\, reducing adolescents’ sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption remains challenging\, while much is known about determinants\, the underlying motivations for sustained popularity remain unclear. \nThe study ‘Sugar-sweetened beverages: consumption\, purchasing behaviour\, and opinions about policy measures in a nationally representative panel of Dutch secondary school adolescents‘ aims to gain insights into the prevalence of perceptions and contextual influences surrounding SSB purchase and consumption in a representative sample of Dutch adolescents; and to investigate adolescents’ opinions on presumed effects of policies to reduce SSB consumption. A cross-sectional\, nationally representative survey in June 2021 among 839 Dutch students aged 12–16 was conducted\, using an online questionnaire to assess dietary behaviours\, including weekly consumption of SSBs (glasses/week). The results showed that over two-thirds of adolescents (72.6%) agreed that ‘Drinking soft drinks is normal.’ Across all adolescents\, average consumption was 9.5 glasses per week; over half (51.7%) were defined as high consumers (≥ 7 glasses/week). Adolescents with constant home availability of SSBs had 14 times higher odds of being high consumers (95% CI 12.32–14.48)\, a significant association; they also tended to purchase SSBs more frequently and spent significantly more money on them\, compared to those without home availability. Nearly half (49.7%) agreed that price increases would reduce their consumption. Overall\, the study confirms that SSBs are widely consumed by adolescents and perceived as a normal\, everyday choice. This normalization is reinforced by their availability and low cost. Fiscal measures and targeted interventions in settings such as supermarkets hold promise for reducing SSB consumption.
