DESCRIPTION:The International Seabed Authority (ISA; French: Autorité internationale des fonds marins) is a Kingston\, Jamaica-based intergovernmental body of 171 Member States plus the European Union. \nIt was established under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and its 1994 Agreement on Implementation. The ISA’s dual mission is to authorize and control the development of mineral related operations in the international seabed\, which is considered the “common heritage of all mankind“\, and to protect the ecosystem of the seabed\, ocean floor and subsoil in “The Area” beyond national jurisdiction. The ISA is responsible for safeguarding the international deep sea\, defined as waters below 200 meters (656 feet)\, where photosynthesis is hampered by inadequate light. Governing approximately half of the total area of the world’s oceans\, the ISA oversees activities that might threaten biological diversity and harm the marine environment. Since its inception in 1994\, the ISA has approved over two dozen ocean floor mining exploration contracts in the Atlantic\, Pacific and Indian Oceans. The majority of these contracts are for exploration in the Clarion–Clipperton zone between Hawaii and Mexico\, where polymetallic nodules contain copper\, cobalt and other minerals essential for powering electric batteries. To date\, the Authority has not authorized any commercial mining contracts as it continues to deliberate over regulations amid global calls for a moratorium on deep sea mining. Scientists and environmentalists warn that such mining could wreak havoc on the ocean\, a crucial carbon sink and home to rare and diverse species. Funded by UNCLOS members and mining contractors\, the Authority operates as an autonomous international organization with its own Assembly\, Council\, and Secretariat. DESCRIPTION:El Niño of Zuidelijke Oscillatie is een natuurverschijnsel in de Grote Oceaan. Langs de evenaar in de oostelijke Grote Oceaan komt het voor dat in de loop van sommige jaren een sterke opwarming van normaal koel zeewater plaatsvindt. \nDie opwarming van het zeewater heeft veel invloed op het weer in grote delen van de wereld\, vooral Noord- en Zuid-Amerika. Soms heeft het weerverschijnsel kleine invloed op het weer in Europa. La Niña is fysisch gezien het tegengestelde effect. Dit doet zich voor wanneer ongewoon koud zeewater bij de evenaar is gemeten. El Niño en La Niña zijn beide tekenen van het El Niño Southern Oscillation- of ENSO-effect. El Niño betekent in het Spaans De Kleine Jongen en refereert aan het ‘Kerstkind’ (aangezien dit fenomeen vooral rond die periode voorkomt)\, een benaming die vissers in Peru hebben gegeven. Eigenlijk bedoelen zij daarmee het warme water dat steeds in januari voor de kust van Peru verschijnt en dat daar een eind maakt aan het visseizoen. Onregelmatig\, maar toch gemiddeld eens in de drie tot zeven jaar\, leidt El Niño tot zo’n uitgebreide en sterke verwarming van het oceaanwater dat de hele atmosfeer daar gedurende langere tijd door wordt beïnvloed. In 2026 was in het voorjaar duidelijk dat de kans op El Niño groot was. De El Niño wint snel aan kracht. Voor de periode oktober tot en met december 2026 schat NOAA de kans op 69 procent dat de gebruikte ENSO-index een niveau bereikt dat hoger ligt dan bij eerdere El Niño’s in de historische meetreeks sinds 1950. Of de sterke El Nino van 2026 toevallig zo sterk is of dat klimaatverandering meespeelt is een actief onderzoeksonderwerp. Daar is het laatste woord nog niet over gezegd. Wel worden sommige effecten van El Niño door klimaatverandering versterkt. Zo versterkt klimaatverandering het contrast tussen natte en droge gebieden. Als een gebied bij een El Niño natter is dan normaal\, dan doet klimaatverandering daar een schepje bovenop. Ook is het aannemelijk dat gebieden die bij een El Niño droger zijn\, door klimaatverandering nog droger zijn. Zijn jonge medewerker\, journalist Georges Lefèvre\, die tevens de Tourdirecteur van de eerste editie was\, werd geïnspireerd door de individuele poging in 1895 van wielrenner Jean Marie Corre. Corre introduceerde in 1895 een fiets van aluminium en testte deze in zijn eentje over alle bekende parcoursen in Frankrijk. Je krijgt er geen melding van. Je kunt het nergens controleren. Dat is geen toeval. Voor platforms als Meta\, TikTok en X levert ophef nu eenmaal meer geld op. Maar zo bepaalt een handvol bedrijven welk verhaal Nederland te horen krijgt. En dat raakt onze democratie. Het gekke is: de Europese wet (de Digital Services Act) verbiedt dit eigenlijk al. Alleen handhaaft Nederland nauwelijks. Daarom starten we vandaag een burgerinitiatief. Met 40.000 handtekeningen kan de de Tweede Kamer worden gedwongen om dit probleem op tafel te leggen. DESCRIPTION:De Pride Amsterdam is een meerdaags evenement met een homocultureel karakter en wordt sinds 1996 jaarlijks rondom het eerste weekend van augustus gehouden in de binnenstad van Amsterdam. \nLhbtiq+-organisaties in de stad organiseren een maand lang allerlei activiteiten. In 2026 is de Amsterdam Pride van 8 tot en met 29 juli. Hoogtepunt is de Canal Parade\, een bonte stoet van boten die op de eerste zaterdag van augustus door de grachten vaart. De tocht gaat van het Oosterdok\, via de Nieuwe Herengracht\, de Amstel en de Prinsengracht naar het Westerdok. Op 4 november 2022 werd bekendgemaakt dat de WorldPride in 2026 in Amsterdam georganiseerd wordt. De WorldPride werd voor het eerst in 2000 gevierd in Rome en vindt sinds 2012 elke twee à drie jaar plaats. Meer nog dan reguliere Pride-feesten staat de WorldPride garant voor veel bezoekers van over de hele wereld. Dikwijls is het het grootste lgbtiq-evenement van het jaar. De WorldPride in Amsterdam zal tevens de EuroPride van 2026 zijn\, waarmee het voor de derde keer is dat de EuroPride in de hoofdstad gehouden wordt. De WorldPride is met een paar dagen overlap direct ná de Amsterdam Pride: van 25 juli tot en met 8 augustus. SUMMARY:Kwaku Summer Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Het Kwaku Summer Festival (voorheen het Kwakoe Zomerfestival) wordt sinds 1975 bijna elk jaar tijdens een aantal weekeinden in de zomer gehouden in het Nelson Mandelapark in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. \nHet is van origine een Surinaams festival\, maar het heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een multicultureel festival. Het festival is ontstaan in 1975 als voetbaltoernooi\, georganiseerd door Stichting Jongeren Centrum Kwakoe tijdens het 700-jarig bestaan van Amsterdam. Het speelde zich aanvankelijk af op de sportvelden van SV Bijlmer\, op de locatie van het huidige Bijlmerplein in Amsterdam Zuidoost. In 1983 verhuisde het festival naar de huidige locatie in het Nelson Mandelapark dat in die tijd Bijlmerpark heette. Eind jaren negentig dienden zowel het jongerencentrum Kwakoe als de organisatie van het festival een vergunningaanvraag in. De festivalorganisatie Stichting Kwakoe Events onder leiding van Winston Kout kreeg de vergunning toegewezen en heeft het festival sindsdien georganiseerd. Van een louter Surinaams feest\, voor arme Surinamers uit de Bijlmerhoogbouw die geen geld hebben om op vakantie te gaan\, ontwikkelde het festival zich sindsdien tot een multicultureel festival dat zich ook op Antillianen en Afrikanen richt. DESCRIPTION:De Kermisfestival Tilburg / Tilburgse Kermis is de grootste kermis in de Benelux en wordt gehouden in de Noord-Brabantse plaats Tilburg. \nEr staan jaarlijks tussen de 230 en 240 attracties uit binnen- en buitenland\, in een 4\,5 kilometer lang lint door het centrum van de stad. De kermis trekt jaarlijks meer dan een miljoen bezoekers en is daarmee een van de best bezochte evenementen van Nederland. Hoewel de kermis met de tijd is meegegaan en dus voor het merendeel uit moderne attracties bestaat is er ook plaats ingeruimd voor een nostalgische kermis. De Tilburgse kermis duurt tien dagen: hij eindigt op de laatste zondag van juli en start dus negen dagen eerder op vrijdag. Ieder jaar treden op de themadagen bekende artiesten uit binnen- en buitenland op. Op de eerste zondag is het tussen 11:00 en 14:00 Blauwe zondag. Dit is een speciale ‘prikkelarme’ periode: geluiden en muziek van attracties worden dan gedempt. Op maandag is het Roze Maandag\, een evenement voor homo- en biseksuelen\, lesbiennes en transgenders (LHBT‘ers)\, na een eerste nichtenavond in 1990 werd dit al snel het drukstbezochte onderdeel van de Tilburgse Kermis. DESCRIPTION:On 12 December 2019\, the General Assembly proclaimed 20 July as World Chess Day to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. \nChess is a two player strategy board game where the aim is to move different types of playing piece\, each with a prescribed set of possible moves\, around a chequered square board trying to capture the opponents ‘king’ piece. Today there are over 2\,000 identifiable variants of the game. One theory is that an early game similar to chess called Chaturanga originated in Northern Indian Subcontinent during the Gupta period (~ 319 – 543 CE) and spread along the Silk Roads west to Persia. Whilst modern Chess is believed to have been derived from Chaturanga means ‘four divisions’ referring either to the divisions of the playing pieces into infantry\, cavalry\, elephantry and chariotry (pieces which in the modern game became the pawn\, knight\, bishop and rook)\, or to the fact that the game was played by four players. Chatrang\, and later Shatranj\, was the name given to the game when it arrived in Sassanid Persia around 600 CE. \nThe earliest reference to the game comes from a Persian manuscript of around 600 CE\, which describes an ambassador from the Indian Subcontinent visiting king Khosrow I (531 – 579 CE) and presenting him with the game as a gift. From there it spread along the Silk to other regions including the Arabian Peninsula and Byzantium. In 900 CE\, Abbasid chess masters al-Suli and al-Lajlaj composed works on the techniques and strategy of the game\, and by 1000 CE Chess was popular across Europe\, and in Russia where it was introduced from the Eurasian Steppe. The Alfonso manuscripts\, also known as the Libro de los Juegos (Book of Games)\, a medieval collection of texts on three different types of popular game from the 13th century CE describe the game of Chess as very similar to Persian Shatranj in rules and gameplay. \nUnder initiative of FIDE\, July 20 has been observed as International Chess Day by chess players around the world since 1966. The designation of World Chess Day of the UN will not only recognize the important role of the FIDE in supporting international cooperation for chess activity and aiming to improve friendly harmony among all peoples of the world\, but also to provide an important platform to foster\, dialogue\, solidarity and culture of peace. \nThe United Nations recognizes that sports\, the arts and physical activity have the power to change perceptions\, prejudices and behaviours\, as well as to inspire people\, break down racial and political barriers\, combat discrimination and defuse conflict\, and therefore contribute in promoting education\, sustainable development\, peace\, cooperation\, solidarity\, social inclusion and health at the local\, regional and international levels. Chess is one of the most ancient\, intellectual and cultural games\, with a combination of sport\, scientific thinking and elements of art. DESCRIPTION:The Viking program consisted of a pair of identical American space probes\, Viking 1 and Viking 2 both launched in 1975\, and landed on Mars in 1976. \nThe mission effort began in 1968 and was managed by the NASA Langley Research Center. Each spacecraft was composed of two main parts: an orbiter spacecraft which photographed the surface of Mars from orbit\, and a lander which studied the planet from the surface. The orbiters also served as communication relays for the landers once they touched down. The Viking program grew from NASA’s earlier\, even more ambitious\, Voyager Mars program\, which was not related to the successful Voyager deep space probes of the late 1970s. Viking 1 was launched on August 20\, 1975\, and the second craft\, Viking 2\, was launched on September 9\, 1975\, both riding atop Titan IIIE rockets with Centaur upper stages. Viking 1 entered Mars orbit on June 19\, 1976\, with Viking 2 following on August 7. After orbiting Mars for more than a month and returning images used for landing site selection\, the orbiters and landers detached; the landers then entered the Martian atmosphere and soft-landed at the sites that had been chosen. The Viking 1 lander touched down on the surface of Mars on July 20\, 1976\, more than two weeks before Viking 2‘s arrival in orbit. Viking 2 then successfully soft-landed on September 3. The orbiters continued imaging and performing other scientific operations from orbit while the landers deployed instruments on the surface. Hoe ga je verder met je dagelijks leven\, als je weet dat elders op de wereld verschrikkelijke bosbranden gaande zijn? Bosbranden gaande zijn? Kan dat eigenlijk? Niet wegkijken van al die gevolgen van de klimaatcrisis en toch iets van levensgeluk vasthouden? Het leven ondanks alles blijven vieren? Velen van ons hebben besloten om zich in te zetten om de klimaatcrisis aan te pakken. Dat kan zijn door plantaardig te eten\, of minder plastic te gebruiken. Anderen gaan het gesprek aan in hun omgeving om bewustwording te vergroten. Of gaan over tot actie\, samen met één van de milieu-organisaties als Milieudefensie\, Greenpeace of Extinction Rebellion. \nVoor zoveel mogelijk mensen die boos\, bezorgd of verdrietig zijn over het klimaat en geïnspireerd zijn om iets te veranderen aan de toestand van het klimaat. Activisten\, bezorgde mensen\, religieus en niet-religieus\, jongeren en volwassenen. Bezoekers van de Klimaatwakes zoeken inspiratie om zich actief in te zetten. Samen delen waar je bang voor bent\, omdat je niet wilt wegkijken\, maar klimaat-rampen onder ogen zien\, geeft troost. Soms merk je dat je inzet tegen de klimaatcrisis je kan vervreemden of isoleren van je vrienden of familie. Of je kan je verdrietig en gefrustreerd voelen dat er zo slecht geluisterd wordt door overheid en bedrijven. De Klimaatwakes zijn een plek waar zorgen over de toekomst van de aarde gedeeld kunnen worden. \nDirk de Bekker schreef ‘Het pesticidenparadijs’ Over de impact van bestrijdingsmiddelen\, verstrengelde belangen en misbruikte wetenschap. Pesticiden beschermen ons tegen plagen en ziekten\, maar zijn inmiddels zelf uitgegroeid tot ziekmakende plaag. This means that around 645 million people were affected by hunger in 2025\, representing a reduction of nearly 14 million compared to 2024 and 43 million compared to 2022. Despite global progress\, recovery remains uneven across regions. Asia\, together with Latin America and the Caribbean\, has recorded steady improvements in recent years. In contrast\, Africa is now home to approximately 309 million hungry people\, compared with 292 million in Asia. Although Africa’s previously rising trend is beginning to stabilize\, with the share of its population facing hunger decreasing from 20.3 percent in 2024 to 20.0 percent in 2025\, the continent now has the highest number of hungry people in absolute terms amid a rapidly growing population. Broader measures of food access tell a similar story. In 2025\, an estimated 25.8 percent of the global population (around 2.1 billion people) experienced moderate or severe food insecurity\, meaning they were at times forced to compromise on the quality or quantity of the food they ate. This is down from 27.1 percent in 2024 and 28.7 percent in 2020 – equivalent to nearly 86 million fewer people than in 2024 and 135 million fewer than in 2020\, though still above pre-pandemic levels. Regional disparities remain stark. More than half of Africa’s population (56.6 percent) faced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2025\, compared to 20.3 percent in Asia\, 22.9 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean\, and 8.7 percent in Northern America and Europe. DESCRIPTION:De Vierdaagse Nijmegen\, officieel de Internationale Vierdaagse Afstandsmarsen Nijmegen\, is een vierdaags wandelevenement dat sinds 1909 ieder jaar wordt gehouden en start op de derde dinsdag van juli.\n\nHet is de grootste meerdaagse wandelprestatietocht ter wereld en staat inmiddels ook bekend als The Walk of the World. Elk jaar doen er deelnemers uit circa tachtig landen mee\, onder wie een groot aantal militairen. De Vierdaagse kent drie verplichte afstanden: 30\, 40 en 50 kilometer. In de week dat de Vierdaagse Nijmegen wordt gehouden worden in de binnenstad van Nijmegen ook de Vierdaagsefeesten (voorheen Nijmeegse Zomerfeesten) gehouden. In de diverse doorkomstgemeenten van de Vierdaagse Nijmegen worden ook festiviteiten georganiseerd. Vele honderdduizenden supporters van de Vierdaagse zijn de hele Vierdaagseweek in de regio aanwezig. \nGebouw en terreinen van De Vereeniging aan het Keizer Karelplein in Nijmegen zijn langjarig start- en finishplaats en onderkomen van de organisatie geweest. Inmiddels is dat verplaatst naar de nabijgelegen Wedren\, waar met tijdelijke voorzieningen veel meer ruimte is gecreëerd ook in het aangrenzende Julianapark en op het Vierdaagseplein. Gestart wordt in afstandsblokken ’s ochtends vanaf 04:00; de uiterlijke finishtijd is de eerste drie dagen 17:00 en op vrijdag 18:00. Militaire deelnemers starten en melden af op het militaire kamp Heumensoord. \nHet evenement werd sinds 1928 traditioneel geopend met een vlaggenparade; sinds 1951 werd deze kleurrijke deelnemersontvangst in Stadion De Goffert in Nijmegen gehouden. In 2011 werd de vlaggenparade voor de laatste keer gehouden vanwege de teruglopende belangstelling. Here\, in the fraction 22/7 which denoted Pi\, the numerator 22 symbolizes the date (22nd day of the month) and numerator 7 indicates the month (July). Approximations for the mathematical constant pi (π) in the history of mathematics reached an accuracy within 0.04% of the true value before the beginning of the Common Era. In Chinese mathematics\, this was improved to approximations correct to what corresponds to about seven decimal digits by the 5th century. Further progress was not made until the 14th century\, when Madhava of Sangamagrama developed approximations correct to eleven and then thirteen digits. Jamshīd al-Kāshī achieved sixteen digits next. Early modern mathematicians reached an accuracy of 35 digits by the beginning of the 17th century (Ludolph van Ceulen)\, and 126 digits by the 19th century (Jurij Vega)\, surpassing the accuracy required for any conceivable application outside of pure mathematics. The record of manual approximation of π is held by William Shanks\, who calculated 527 decimals correctly in 1853. Since the middle of the 20th century\, the approximation of π has been the task of electronic digital computers (for a comprehensive account\, see Chronology of computation of π).
