DESCRIPTION:The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (shortened as Roman or the Roman Space Telescope\, and formerly the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope or WFIRST) is a NASA infrared space telescope scheduled to launch August 30\, 2026. \nThe Roman Space Telescope is based on an existing 2.4 m wide field of view primary mirror and will carry two scientific instruments. The Wide-Field Instrument (WFI) is a 300.8-megapixel multi-band visible and near-infrared camera\, providing a sharpness of images comparable to that achieved by the Hubble Space Telescope over a 0.28 square degree field of view\, 100 times larger than imaging cameras on the Hubble. The Coronagraphic Instrument (CGI) is a high-contrast\, small field of view camera and spectrometer covering visible and near-infrared wavelengths using novel starlight-suppression technology. Stated objectives include a search for extra-solar planets using gravitational microlensing\, along with probing the chronology of the universe and growth of cosmic structure\, with the end goal of measuring the effects of dark energy\, the consistency of general relativity\, and the curvature of spacetime. As of July 2022\, Roman is scheduled to be launched on a Falcon Heavy rocket under a contract specifying readiness by October 2026. DESCRIPTION:The Carrington Event was the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history\, peaking on 1–2 September 1859 during solar cycle 10. \nIt created strong auroral displays that were reported globally and caused sparking and even fires in telegraph stations. The geomagnetic storm was most likely the result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun colliding with Earth’s magnetosphere. The geomagnetic storm was associated with a very bright solar flare on 1 September 1859. It was observed and recorded independently by British astronomers Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson—the first records of a solar flare. Het kan gaan om een legende\, een historisch verhaal of om een boom met een bijzondere waarde voor een dorp of stad. De boom die een natuurramp overleefde of waaronder al sinds mensenheugenis het dorpsfeest plaatsvindt. We doen dit natuurlijk met de bedoeling om meer aandacht voor de enorme betekenis van bomen te benadrukken: voor klimaat\, duurzaamheid en biodiversiteit. Groen om de hoek verdient meer aandacht; bomen zijn de longen van de aarde. Ook vertolken bomen een emotionele waarde. Zij vertellen ons verhalen die het waard zijn gedeeld en herinnerd te worden. In de hoop dat jij meedoet\, want de kans dat Nederland met dit beleid zijn klimaatdoelen haalt is nihil. Het klimaatbeleid bevat bijna geen effectieve oplossingen zoals woningisolatie\, een CO2-heffing voor de industrie\, krimp van de luchtvaart en de afschaffing van fossiele subsidies. In plaats daarvan kiest dit kabinet voor onzekere langetermijntechnologieën en verlaagt het zelfs de vliegbelasting. Met de kaartenactie herinneren we premier Jetten eraan dat rechtvaardig klimaatbeleid kan en moet. Hoe meer kaarten\, hoe beter! Met het klimaatbeleid van dit kabinet zijn we in 2040 nog steeds afhankelijk van fossiele energie en daarmee van fossiele landen zoals Rusland en Amerika. Het aandeel energie dat we in 2040 importeren aan olie en gas is minstens de helft tot 63%! Deze feiten staan in de infographic van de Klimaat- en Energieverkenning. In een brief vragen ze onder meer om een volledig wapenembargo en het opschorten van het handelsverdrag tussen de Europese Unie en Israël. Volgens de ondertekenaars blijven de maatregelen die het kabinet tot nu toe heeft genomen\, zoals het weren van producten uit illegale nederzettingen\, ver achter bij wat nodig is gezien de situatie in Gaza en op de bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever. De brief is onder meer ondertekend door de oud-politici Job Cohen\, Jozias van Aartsen\, Jan Pronk en Ahmed Aboutaleb. Voormalig diplomaat Angélique Eijpe is ook een van de ondertekenaars. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAn international team including Nobel Prize-winning physicist Professor Sir Roger Penrose has observed a long-predicted effect of gravity on a falling quantum object for the first time. \nThe result shows that a fundamental principle at the heart of Einstein’s theory of gravity remains consistent with the behaviour of matter in the quantum world. The study ‘Observation of the quantum phase of free fall and the consistency with the equivalence principle‘\, led by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev\, The University of Ulm and the University of Oxford\, has been published in Science Advances. For more than a century\, physicists have relied on two extraordinarily successful descriptions of nature. Quantum mechanics explains the strange behaviour of atoms and other tiny objects. Einstein’s theory of gravity explains how objects fall and how gravity shapes the Universe. Yet physicists still do not fully understand how the two fit together. Now\, an international team has performed an experiment that probes the point where they meet. In the study\, the researchers observed a distinctive change in the quantum properties of atoms as they fell under gravity. Crucially\, the effect they measured is the same one predicted when Einstein’s equivalence principle\, a cornerstone of his theory of gravity\, is applied to a quantum object. The equivalence principle states that for an observer in free fall\, gravity should locally disappear. Someone falling freely in a lift\, for example\, would experience weightlessness. Whilst this theory has survived extraordinarily precise tests involving ordinary matter\, it was unclear how this could be experimentally tested with quantum objects\, which can behave as waves and effectively travel along more than one path. At the heart of the experiment is a new apparatus the researchers call the Quantum Galileo Interferometer. DESCRIPTION:Zwemmen en recreëren in buitenwater leveren een belangrijke bijdrage aan gezondheid\, welzijn en leefomgeving maar hoe gezond is ons buitenwater voor mens en natuur? \nOp basis van openbaar beschikbare meet- en monitoringsgegevens van 2015 tot en met 2024\, blijkt dat de waterkwaliteit in Nederlandse zwemwateren stagneert. Dat geldt zowel voor wateren die officieel zijn aangewezen om in te zwemmen\, als voor onofficiële zwemwateren waarin veel wordt gezwommen. Vrijwel in alle onderzochte zwemwateren komen chemische normoverschrijdingen voor. Het onderzoek ‘Zorgen over zwemwater‘ van Natuur & Milieu en het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) laat zien dat voor 35 van de 122 gemonitorde chemische stoffen normoverschrijdingen plaatsvinden in wateren met officiële en onofficiële zwemlocaties. Voor sommige stoffen worden de normen op meer dan 90 procent van de onderzochte locaties overschreden. What responsibilities emerge when we recognise aquatic ecosystems as living entities? And how do we build cultures of care around water? This year’s edition\, curated by Symbiotic Lab\, unfolds across four locations in Berlin: FLUSSBAD Campus\, SPORE Initiative\, Spreepark Art Space and Floating University Berlin. Over four days\, participants will gather through workshops\, performances\, collective meals\, rituals\, listening sessions\, artistic interventions\, public conversations\, and a multispecies parliament. The programme also features a keynote by renowned hydrofeminist philosopher and cultural theorist Astrida Neimanis. \nThe Confluence is a growing pan-European network of water bodies and their communities\, working across art\, ecology\, law\, activism\, research\, and public engagement. Launched in 2023 by the Embassy of the North Sea\, TBA21–Academy\, and ILP Mar Menor at the shores of the Spanish saltwater lagoon\, the first ecosystem in Europe with legal personhood\, it calls for the legal and cultural recognition of water bodies as living entities with rights\, intrinsic value\, and agency. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4.
