DESCRIPTION:Steeds vaker bepalen een paar grote techbedrijven wat jij online wel en niet te zien krijgt\, berichten over onder andere klimaat\, mensenrechten\, Palestina en queer-acceptatie worden stilletjes weggehaald of nauwelijks nog getoond en haat en desinformatie krijgen tegelijk vaak vrij spel. \nDit heet shadowbanning. Je krijgt er geen melding van. Je kunt het nergens controleren. Dat is geen toeval. Voor platforms als Meta\, TikTok en X levert ophef nu eenmaal meer geld op. Maar zo bepaalt een handvol bedrijven welk verhaal Nederland te horen krijgt. En dat raakt onze democratie. Het gekke is: de Europese wet (de Digital Services Act) verbiedt dit eigenlijk al. Alleen handhaaft Nederland nauwelijks. Daarom starten we vandaag een burgerinitiatief. Met 40.000 handtekeningen kan de de Tweede Kamer worden gedwongen om dit probleem op tafel te leggen. Het is tijd om de wet eindelijk te handhaven. COC\, Defend Democracy\, Hivos\, Milieudefensie\, Oxfam Novib\, Stem op een Vrouw\, Transgender Netwerk & DeGoedeZaak geloven dat iedereen het recht heeft om te weten wanneer een platform diens berichten onzichtbaar maakt. Daarom vragen ze de Tweede Kamer om vijf dingen: \n\nEchte handhaving door de toezichthouder\nOpenheid over wat onzichtbaar wordt gemaakt\nBescherming van organisaties tegen het zomaar verwijderen van accounts\nEen meldpunt voor digitale censuur\nEen jaarlijks openbaar overzicht over hoe platforms in Nederland modereren\n\nHoe meer handtekeningen\, hoe sterker ze staan. DESCRIPTION:Spiegeltje\, spiegeltje aan de wand: wie schenkt de meeste suiker van het land? \nEen dagje Efteling staat voor sprookjes\, achtbanen en familieplezier\, maar sinds eind 2024 staat er ook een minder sprookjesachtige attractie op de plattegrond: D’n Dorstlesser. Via dit concept\, een samenwerking met Coca-Cola\, kunnen bezoekers de hele dag onbeperkt suikerhoudende drankjes tappen\, in een park dat grotendeels bestaat uit gezinnen met jonge kinderen. Voor €17 koop je een herbruikbare beker waarmee je de hele openingsdag\, elke 45 minuten opnieuw\, mag bijvullen bij een van de vier taplocaties. Bij realistisch gebruik (vijf tapbeurten cola) zit je al op 65 suikerklontjes: ruim tien keer de strengste WHO-streefwaarde van 25 gram (6 klontjes) vrije suikers per dag. Wie de beker maximaal benut\, komt tot 10 bekers per dag: 130 suikerklontjes\, nog voordat er een hap is gegeten. Er is bij de tap ook water en zijn er suikervrije varianten\, maar daar draait het concept niet om. D’n Dorstlesser wordt gepresenteerd en beleefd als attractie op zich: iets om de hele dag mee bezig te zijn\, niet als een simpel glaasje water erbij. Ook via suikervrije varianten wennen kinderen aan een zoete smaak en aan het idee dat de hele dag door tappen normaal is. Het stimuleert bovendien merkbinding op jonge leeftijd\, ongeacht welke variant er wordt getapt: kinderen die de hele dag tappen\, proeven en mixen\, raken al vroeg vertrouwd met één merk. Foodwatch roept de Efteling op te stoppen met onbeperkte frisdrank via D’n Dorstlesser / Coca-Cola Freestyle\, en de constructie met de “partners in kwaliteit” kritisch tegen het licht te houden. Zij nodigen het park uit om haar eigen ambities uit de Ambitie van Gezond Uit waar te maken. Ook roepen ze andere parken op hun aanbod te toetsen: parken die onbeperkt frisdrank\, ijs of friet aanbieden\, en parken die zich net als de Efteling aan de Ambitie van Gezond Uit hebben verbonden (zoals Toverland\, Walibi Holland en Burgers’ Zoo). DESCRIPTION:De gasprijzen gaan door het dak en Nederland heeft een watertekort\, toch stampen techmiljardairs als Elon Musk en Jeff Bezos energieslurpende\, foeilelijke datacenters uit de grond. \nDatacenters zijn gebouwen met servers\, krachtige computers die digitale informatie opslaan en verwerken. Om al die torens van computers draaiende te houden is energie en water nodig. Eén groot datacentrum verbruikt net zoveel energie als alle huishoudens in Amsterdam bij elkaar en gebruikt al snel meer dan 250 miljoen liter drinkwater per jaar. Om aan die energievraag te voldoen investeren overheden opnieuw in fossiel gas-infrastructuur\, maar het komt ook steeds vaker voor dat techbedrijven hun eigen gascentrales bouwen\, off-grid en voor hen alleen. De geplande exponentiële groei in datacenters gaat onmogelijk samen met de afbouw van fossiel en de transitie naar een groene\, eerlijke samenleving. De macht van Big Tech kan worden teruggepakt door nu de pauzeknop in te drukken. DESCRIPTION:Het Grachtenfestival is een tiendaags-festival in Amsterdam\, verschillende locaties in de stad zijn decor van concerten – van klassieke muziek tot jazz naar muziek uit andere culturen. \nHet festival is in de loop der jaren uitgegroeid tot een tiendaags festival\, met meer dan 100 concerten op vele tientallen verschillende locaties\, in verschillende delen van Amsterdam zoals het Centrum\, Noord\, het IJ\, de Zuidas en soms ook buiten Amsterdam. Het festival heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een van de belangrijkste podia voor jong talent op het gebied van klassieke muziek en jazz muziek. Jong talent krijgt de kans zich op een passend podium te presenteren: in een huis-\, tuin- of dakterrasconcert\, in een concertzaal of op een openluchtpodium. Musici treden vaak een aantal jaar achter elkaar op tijdens het Grachtenfestival\, en kunnen hun eigen stijl verder ontwikkelen. Naast concerten voor het algemene publiek\, zijn er ook concerten voor de jeugd (van baby’s en peuters tot tieners). Voor de allerkleinsten zijn er de baby-\, peuter- en dreumesconcerten. Voor de wat oudere kinderen zijn er workshops of speciale kindervoorstellingen. Tijdens het Grachtenfestival vindt het Prinsengrachtconcert plaats\, een klassiek muziekconcert dat jaarlijks gehouden wordt op de Prinsengracht in Amsterdam. Het concert vindt in de open lucht plaats op een ponton voor Hotel Pulitzer\, en vindt plaats in de zomer. Het concert is gratis toegankelijk en de gracht ligt dan vol boten met publiek. Het Prinsengrachtconcert vindt plaats tijdens het Grachtenfestival maar wordt onafhankelijk daarvan georganiseerd en geproduceerd door de Stichting Prinsengrachtconcert. Het concert wordt traditioneel afgesloten met een versie van Aan de Amsterdamse grachten. Het concert wordt live uitgezonden door AVROTROS. Voorafgaand aan het Prinsengrachtconcert vindt het Kinderprinsengrachtconcert plaats. Bij dit concert treden drie jonge klassieke talenten op. Het concert vindt plaats van 18:30 tot 19:00 en wordt rechtstreeks uitgezonden op NPO 3. DESCRIPTION:Wespen zijn hele nuttig en mooie dieren en behalve de bekende limonadewespen die je op het terras ziet\, zijn er in Nederland nog veel meer soorten\, namelijk meer dan 5000. \nIn tuinen komen ook al veel soorten voor. Doe mee met de wespentelling op 15-23 augustus 2026\, tel de soorten in jouw tuin en geef ze door. Een wesp is een insect van de orde Hymenoptera en suborde Apocrita dat noch een bij is noch een mier. De Apocrita hebben een gemeenschappelijke evolutionaire voorouder en vormen een clade; wespen vormen als groep geen clade\, maar zijn parafyletisch ten opzichte van bijen en mieren. In Nederland komen ongeveer zesduizend (6.000) soorten wespen voor. Hiervan zijn er ongeveer vijftien die een sociale levenswijze hebben\, en net als honingbijen in kolonies samenleven. Deze sociale wespen verdelen we weer in vier groepen: \n\nKortkopwespen\nLangkopwespen\nVeldwespen\nHoornaars\n\nNaast deze sociale wespen\, ook wel papierwespen genoemd\, zijn er dus nog duizenden andere wespensoorten. DESCRIPTION:The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be hosted by Mongolia in its capital city\, Ulaanbaatar\, from 17 to 28 August 2026. \nThis landmark global event will bring together delegates from 197 Parties\, heads of state\, ministers\, representatives from international organizations\, scientific communities\, civil society\, and the private sector to forge solutions to the interconnected challenges of desertification\, land degradation and drought. Mongolia\, with a vast territory of 1.56 million square kilometers\, is experiencing land degradation across approximately 76.9 per cent of its land. Recognizing the critical role of land management in addressing the triple environmental crisis\, the country has become a key voice in global efforts to combat desertification and enhance land resilience. Mongolia’s ambitious development agendas—particularly its interconnected national movements on environment and agriculture—position the country as a strategic host for COP17 of the UNCCD. COP17 will be convened in alignment with the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026)\, offering a crucial global opportunity to highlight sustainable rangeland management and the needs of more than one billion people who directly depend on these vital ecosystems for their livelihoods. During the two-week conference\, participants will engage in a high-level segment that includes ministerial dialogues\, along with multi-stakeholder forums and thematic discussions on science–policy integration\, innovation\, solutions\, technology\, and financing. Niet wegkijken van al die gevolgen van de klimaatcrisis en toch iets van levensgeluk vasthouden? Het leven ondanks alles blijven vieren? Velen van ons hebben besloten om zich in te zetten om de klimaatcrisis aan te pakken. Dat kan zijn door plantaardig te eten\, of minder plastic te gebruiken. Anderen gaan het gesprek aan in hun omgeving om bewustwording te vergroten. Of gaan over tot actie\, samen met één van de milieu-organisaties als Milieudefensie\, Greenpeace of Extinction Rebellion. \nVoor zoveel mogelijk mensen die boos\, bezorgd of verdrietig zijn over het klimaat en geïnspireerd zijn om iets te veranderen aan de toestand van het klimaat. DESCRIPTION:World Mosquito Day\, observed annually on 20 August\, is a commemoration of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that female anopheline mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans\, thus confirming the mosquito-malaria theory\, an idea that had been building in recent years through the work of various contributors such as Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran and Patrick Manson. \nPrior to the discovery of the transmitting organism\, vector\, there were few means for controlling the spread of the disease although the discovery of quinine in treatment had alleviated the problem of treatment. According to one survey\, nearly half the world population was at significant risk from malaria in the 19th century with a 10% mortality among those infected. Ross had already conducted experiments with Culex (possibly C. fatigans) fed on birds infected with bird malaria Protesoma relictum (now Plasmodium relictum) in 1894 and noted that they developed in mosquito gut and had surmised that the same may happen in malaria. The discovery was made in a small laboratory in Begumpet area of Secunderabad\, Hyderabad. Today the laboratory is known as the Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Parasitology and houses a small museum on Ross and his malaria research. The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine holds Mosquito Day celebrations every year\, including events such as parties and exhibitions. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:Ieder jaar op 20 augustus wordt een event georganiseerd om stil te staan bij de dood van Kerwin Lucas Duinmeijer en om een stem te laten horen tegen racisme\, fascisme en oorlog. \n \nIn de nacht van 20 op 21 augustus 1983 vond in de Damstraat in Amsterdam een steekpartij plaats\, waarbij de 15-jarige Antilliaan Kerwin Duinmeijer (officiële naam: Kerwin Urleson Lucas) ernstig gewond raakte\, hij overleed enkele uren later in een ziekenhuis aan bloedverlies. De dader was de 16-jarige skinhead Nico Bodemeijer. In de media en in de publieke opinie werd kort na de gebeurtenis algemeen aangenomen dat racisme een belangrijke rol had gespeeld in de toedracht omdat tijdens het incident door Bodemeijer racistische taal werd geuit. De dood van Duinmeijer werd bestempeld als eerste racistische moord in Nederland na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Niettemin stelde de rechter in haar vonnis dat het niet aannemelijk is geworden dat racisme het wezenlijk motief voor de daad is geweest. DESCRIPTION:2026 is going to be renowned for the development of the largest El Niño in living memory and what is probably the largest such event since the 19th century. \nAnalysis of historical data and computer simulations highlight the anomalous global rainfall patterns from El Niño\, these are also well documented in a variety of impacts and humanitarian studies which detail the more sector-specific impacts. The Indian summer monsoon is one of the regional weather patterns affected as El Niño grows and it is already running well below normal rainfall. Other regions at risk of low rainfall include Central America\, west Pacific nations and tropical South America. El Niño also affects tropical cyclones and suppresses Atlantic hurricanes by increasing wind shear in the tropical Atlantic. Consistent with this\, there have only been three storms so far this season\, but it only takes one large hurricane to lead to devastating impacts. The El Niño is now growing towards its peak in winter\, and the impacts will affect not only the tropics but also the mid latitudes and so southern Africa and north-east Australia are expected to be at heightened risk of drought. DESCRIPTION:The Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017. \nIn its resolution 72/165 (2017)\, the General Assembly\, established the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism to be commemorated annually on 21 August\, in order to honour and support the victims and survivors of terrorism and to promote and protect the full enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedoms. In April 2020\, mandated by General Assembly resolution 73/305\, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres published his report on the ‘Progress of the UN system to support Member States in assisting victims of terrorism’ (A/74/790)\, which calls for the ‘enhancement of international cooperation to assist victims of terrorism’. Member States\, through the biennial review resolutions of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy have emphasized the important role of victims of terrorism in countering terrorism\, promoting international solidarity\, preventing violent extremism\, and helping Member States recognize and uphold their human rights\, and support their distinct needs. \nSince the sixth review of the Strategy (2018)\, developments at the international\, regional\, and national levels have increasingly demonstrated that support to victims has moved beyond symbolic solidarity towards a more robust engagement to advance their rights and needs. This is reflected in the establishment in 2019 of a Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism\, and the adoption of General Assembly resolution A/RES/73/305 on the enhancement of international cooperation to assist victims of terrorism. The eighth review resolution\, adopted on 22 June 2023 (A/RES/77/298) notes the importance of upholding the rights and supporting the needs of victims of terrorism\, in particular of women\, children and those affected by sexual and gender-based violence committed by terrorists. It encourages all Member States to develop national comprehensive assistance plans for victims of terrorism and their families to address the immediate-\, short- and long-term needs of victims of terrorism. The resolution welcomed the first United Nations Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism\, held in September 2022 at UN Headquarters\, encourages the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism\, through the Global Victims of Terrorism Support Programme and the United Nations Victims of Terrorism Support Portal\, to continue to raise awareness on victims of terrorism and the promotion and protection of their rights. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. \nThe General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/73/296\, designated 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief recognizing the importance of providing victims of acts of violence based on religion or belief and members of their families with appropriate support and assistance in accordance with applicable law. It strongly deplored all acts of violence against persons on the basis of their religion or belief\, as well as any such acts directed against their homes\, businesses\, properties\, schools\, cultural centres or places of worship\, as well as all attacks on and in religious places\, sites and shrines that are in violation of international law. A previous resolution establishing the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism (A/RES/72/165) also recognized that working together to enhance the implementation of existing legal regimes that protect individuals against discrimination and hate crimes\, increasing interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural efforts and expanding human rights education are important first steps in combating incidents of intolerance\, discrimination and violence against individuals on the basis of religion or belief. \nBy proclaiming an International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief\, the General Assembly recalled that States have the primary responsibility to promote and protect human rights\, including the human rights of persons belonging to religious minorities\, including their right to exercise their religion or belief freely. Freedom of religion or belief\, freedom of opinion and expression\, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of association are interdependent\, interrelated and mutually reinforcing. They are enshrined in articles 18\, 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Upholding these rights plays an important role in the fight against all forms of intolerance and of discrimination based on religion or belief. The open\, constructive and respectful debate of ideas\, as well as interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural dialogue\, at the local\, national\, regional and international levels\, can play a positive role in combating religious hatred\, incitement and violence. Furthermore\, the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and full respect for the freedom to seek\, receive and impart information can play a positive role in strengthening democracy and combating religious intolerance. \nLinks:\nDay Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief
