DESCRIPTION:In the UN Charter\, a Non-Self-Governing Territory is defined as a territory “whose people have not yet attained a full measure of self-government.” \nIn 1946\, several UN Member States identified a number of territories under their administration that were not self-governing and placed them on a UN list. Countries administering Non-Self-Governing Territories are called administering Powers. As a result of the decolonization process over the years\, most of the territories were removed from the list. Chapter XI of the UN Charter – the Declaration regarding Non-Self-Governing Territories – provides that Member States administering Territories\, which have not attained self-government recognize “that the interests of the inhabitants of these territories are paramount” and accept as a “sacred trust” the obligation to promote their well-being. Furthermore\, administering Powers\, in addition to ensuring the political\, economic\, social and educational advancement of the peoples\, undertake to assist them in developing self-government and free political institutions. Administering Powers also have an obligation to transmit regularly to the Secretary-General information on the economic\, social and educational conditions in the territories under their administration. In a later agreement\, the UN General Assembly\, by its resolution 54/91 of 6 December 1999\, urged the administering Powers concerned to take effective measures to safeguard and guarantee the inalienable rights of the peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territories to their natural resources\, including land\, and to establish and maintain control over the future development of those resources\, and requested the administering Powers to take all necessary steps to protect the property rights of the peoples of those territories. It also urged all States\, directly and through their action in the specialized agencies and other organizations of the United Nations system\, to provide moral and material assistance to the peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territories. Through the same resolution\, the General Assembly requested the annual observance of the Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories. Gelukkig zijn veel hittemaatregelen relatief simpel\, en gebeurt er al veel: gemeenten\, provincies\, woningcorporaties\, gezondheidsorganisaties en kennisinstellingen werken hard aan oplossingen. Maar er is meer nodig. Daarom is Heat Action Day jaarlijks dé dag om samen stil te staan bij het belang van de aanpak van hittestress. DESCRIPTION:World Ocean Day (WOD) is an international day that takes place annually on June 8\, the concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. \n“World Oceans Day” was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008. The international day supports the implementation of worldwide Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fosters public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources. World Oceans Day is observed by all UN member states.World Oceans Day reminds every one of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our Planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean\, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean\, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans. Hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations\, in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global\, this year’s annual program will celebrate the wonders of the ocean as a source of life that supports humanity and all other organisms on Earth. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source\, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen\, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity\, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention\, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030. Even though all its benefits\, the ocean is now in need of support. With 90% of big fish populations depleted\, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed\, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life. “Reimagine”\, the theme of World Oceans Day 2026\, invites us to change the way we see and care for the ocean. For too long\, we have viewed it as something distant\, when in fact it is part of our daily lives: the air we breathe\, the food we eat\, and the climate balance that makes our existence possible. Die landen worden verdeeld over twaalf groepen met vier landen waarvan dan de nummer 1\, 2 en acht nummers 3 door zullen gaan naar de zestiende finales. Het is het eerste wereldkampioenschap dat in drie landen georganiseerd wordt. SUMMARY:Nacht van de Vluchteling 2026
DESCRIPTION:Stichting Vluchteling organiseert sinds 2010\, rondom Wereldvluchtelingendag (20 juni)\, de Nacht van de Vluchteling om humanitaire crises in de wereld onder de aandacht te brengen. \nDoor middel van dit evenement laten ze zien solidair te zijn met mensen op de vlucht en halen we samen zoveel mogelijk geld op. Met deze opbrengst kan Stichting Vluchteling met haar lokale partners snel ter plekke levensreddende noodhulp bieden zoals onderdak\, medische zorg\, voedsel\, drinkwater en sanitaire voorzieningen. De Nacht van de Vluchteling is een wandeltocht waar bewustwording\, uitdagende kilometers en de bijzondere sfeer van saamhorigheid centraal staan. Je kan je individueel inschrijven\, maar ook samen met je familie of als organisatie een team starten. Onder de deelnemers zijn er ook mensen met een eigen vluchtverhaal en organisaties die zich dagelijks inzetten voor dit thema. Dit zorgt onderweg voor mooie ontmoetingen en gesprekken. In 2026 wordt gelopen voor noodhulp in Afghanistan\, Libanon\, Somalië\, Burkina Faso en Oekraïne. In 2026 bestaat Stichting Vluchteling 50 jaar. Dit is natuurlijk geen jubileum om te vieren\, maar een moment om samen stil te staan bij de veerkracht van mensen op de vlucht en bij waarom dit werk nog altijd nodig is. Al 50 jaar zet Stichting Vluchteling zich in voor mensen op de vlucht door noodhulp te bieden daar waar dat het hardst nodig is. En daarom komen ze ook in 2026 opnieuw samen in beweging. Speciaal vanwege dit 50-jarig bestaan wordt éénmalig een 50 km-route toegevoegd in de steden Rotterdam\, Utrecht en Nijmegen. Corre introduceerde in 1895 een fiets van aluminium en testte deze in zijn eentje over alle bekende parcoursen in Frankrijk. DESCRIPTION:World Drowning Prevention Day\, declared through the April 2021 UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/75/273 “Global drowning prevention”\, is held annually on 25 July. \nThis global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and to offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. All stakeholders – governments\, UN agencies\, civil society organizations\, the private sector\, academia and individuals – are invited to mark World Drowning Prevention Day by highlighting the need for urgent\, coordinated and multi-sectoral action on proven measures such as: \n\ninstalling barriers controlling access to water;\nproviding safe places away from water such as crèches for pre-school children with capable childcare;\nteaching swimming\, water safety and safe rescue skills;\ntraining bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation;\nsetting and enforcing safe boating\, shipping and ferry regulations;\nimproving flood risk management.\n\nThe UN General Assembly resolution invited WHO to coordinate actions on drowning prevention within the UN system. In this capacity\, WHO leads preparations for World Drowning Prevention Day by producing related advocacy materials\, hosting a global launch event and supporting national and local activities in countries and communities around the world. Every year\, an estimated 236\,000 people drown\, making drowning a major public health problem worldwide. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death globally for children and young people aged 1-24 years. Meer dan 1300 soorten leven hier\, van de zeemeeuw tot de bruinvis. Zij delen hun leefomgeving met het afval dat wij achterlaten. En jij komt hier juist om te genieten van rust\, ruimte en natuur. Langs 30 locaties aan de hele Noordzeekust pakken ieder jaar duizenden mensen hun emmer. Samen ruimen ze op wat hier niet thuishoort. Recognizing the critical role of land management in addressing the triple environmental crisis\, the country has become a key voice in global efforts to combat desertification and enhance land resilience. Mongolia’s ambitious development agendas—particularly its interconnected national movements on environment and agriculture—position the country as a strategic host for COP17 of the UNCCD. COP17 will be convened in alignment with the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026)\, offering a crucial global opportunity to highlight sustainable rangeland management and the needs of more than one billion people who directly depend on these vital ecosystems for their livelihoods. During the two-week conference\, participants will engage in a high-level segment that includes ministerial dialogues\, along with multi-stakeholder forums and thematic discussions on science–policy integration\, innovation\, solutions\, technology\, and financing. DESCRIPTION:Open Monumentendagen worden in Europese landen jaarlijks georganiseerd in de maand september\, gewoonlijk niet vrij toegankelijke monumenten worden dan gedurende een of meer dagen opengesteld voor publiek\, in Nederland in het tweede weekend van september. \nDe Europese Open Monumentendagen vonden voor het eerst plaats in 1991. Daarvoor waren er al lokale initiatieven: in 1984 vond in Frankrijk de eerste Journée Portes Ouvertes plaats\, en in Nederland was de eerste Open Monumentendag in 1987. Vlaanderen volgde in 1989. Naar aanleiding van het succes van de Franse en Nederlandse dagen\, organiseerde het Comité voor Cultureel Erfgoed van de Raad van Europa in 1989 een internationale bijeenkomst\, waarbij overleg plaatsvond over eventuele Europese Open Monumentendagen. De plannen die tijdens deze bijeenkomst bedacht zijn\, werden door de Raad van Europa en de Nederlandse Stichting Open Monumentendag verder uitgewerkt. Dit leidde tot de eerste European Heritage Days (EHD) in 1991. In dat jaar deden er elf landen mee\, in 2005 waren het er 47. In 2017 waren er vijftig staten die de Europese Culturele Conventie ondertekenden aangesloten bij European Heritage Days en er werden 70.000 georganiseerd. Naast het openstellen van gebouwen worden er activiteiten georganiseerd voor jong en oud\, zoals wandelingen\, fietstochten\, boottochten en lezingen. \nHet thema voor 2026 is ‘Veerkrachtig erfgoed\, in tijden van onzekerheid’ (Heritage at Risk: Revive\, Resist\, Reimagine). Eeuwenlang boden monumenten ons bescherming tegen gevaren van buitenaf. Nu worden ze zelf geconfronteerd met nieuwe uitdagingen: van de effecten van klimaatverandering tot het tekort aan vakmensen die deze bijzondere plekken kunnen onderhouden en doorgeven. Toch laten monumenten hun kracht zien. Ze staan symbool voor herstel\, vernieuwing en het vermogen om mee te bewegen met veranderende tijden. Voorbeelden zijn forten en bunkers die ons land beschermden of bijzondere panden die opnieuw zijn opgebouwd na brand\, overstroming of oorlog. SUMMARY:Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope
DESCRIPTION:The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (shortened as Roman or the Roman Space Telescope\, and formerly the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope or WFIRST) is a NASA infrared space telescope in development and scheduled to launch by May 2027. \nThe Roman Space Telescope is based on an existing 2.4 m wide field of view primary mirror and will carry two scientific instruments. The Wide-Field Instrument (WFI) is a 300.8-megapixel multi-band visible and near-infrared camera\, providing a sharpness of images comparable to that achieved by the Hubble Space Telescope over a 0.28 square degree field of view\, 100 times larger than imaging cameras on the Hubble. The Coronagraphic Instrument (CGI) is a high-contrast\, small field of view camera and spectrometer covering visible and near-infrared wavelengths using novel starlight-suppression technology. Stated objectives include a search for extra-solar planets using gravitational microlensing\, along with probing the chronology of the universe and growth of cosmic structure\, with the end goal of measuring the effects of dark energy\, the consistency of general relativity\, and the curvature of spacetime. As of July 2022\, Roman is scheduled to be launched on a Falcon Heavy rocket under a contract specifying readiness by October 2026 supporting a NASA launch commitment of May 2027. \nLinks:\nNancy Grace Roman Space Telescope
