DESCRIPTION:Judges and other judicial officers such as magistrates\, court commissioners\, and arbitrators shoulder a profound responsibility – upholding the rule of law\, protecting rights\, and ensuring that justice is impartial and fair. \nBut behind the bench\, many judges struggle in silence. Long hours\, isolation\, and the emotional toll of decision-making can affect their well-being\, ultimately influencing the quality of justice. Corruption thrives where integrity falters. A judiciary under stress is more vulnerable to external influence\, conflicts of interest\, and erosion of public confidence. The United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) \, especially Article 11\, acknowledges this danger and calls for safeguarding the independence and integrity of the judiciary. Judicial well-being is a prerequisite for judicial independence\, integrity\, and efficiency. When judges are supported\, they are better equipped to resist undue influence\, uphold ethical standards\, and deliver justice fairly and competently. The path to international recognition began with the Regional Judicial Conference on Integrity and Judicial Well-being\, held in Nauru in July 2024. Organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with the Nauru Judiciary\, the gathering brought together nearly twenty judicial leaders and global experts to confront a shared concern: judges around the world are under pressure\, often without the resources or acknowledgment they need. On 25 July 2024\, they adopted the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-being which recognizes that the health and well-being of judges is critical to ensuring judicial integrity\, independence\, and the quality of justice delivered to the public. \nLinks:\nDay on Judicial Well-being

DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Solidarity with Antifascist Prisoners originated in 2014 as a Day of Solidarity with Jock Palfreeman—an Australian man serving a 20-year sentence in Bulgaria for defending two Romani men from an attack by fascist football hooligans. \nHappily\, Palfreeman has been granted parole after serving 11 years of his sentence\, but there are still hundreds of others who remain imprisoned for standing up against fascism and hate. That’s why July 25th is so important; the International Day of Solidarity with Antifascist Prisoners aims to break down the borders and build an international response against fascism. Guido van Leemput – schrijver van ‘De gelaagde oorlog’ en medeoprichter van Stop de Oorlog Amsterdam – geeft zijn maandelijkse analyse van de situatie aan het front én de onderhandelingstafels. Nog niet eerder was een einde van het massale bloedvergieten zo dichtbij. Komt er een vrede in het belang van de Oekraïense en Russische bevolking? Of kijken we naar oligarchen en kapitalisten die op een nietsontziende manier de wereld opnieuw aan het verdelen zijn? De bijeenkomsten op het Spui worden live uitgezonden door Radio Patapoe. Alle vorige uitzendingen staan bij elkaar op een plek. Radio Patapoe is vrije radio zonder censuur of commercie en voorstander van vrijheid van meningsuiting en denken. \nActie tegen de oorlog in Oekraïne: Met sprekers\, dichters\, muziek en twee minuten stilte wordt vrijdag 24 juli 2026 opnieuw geprotesteerd op het Spui in Amsterdam tegen het bloedvergieten\, bombardementen op civiele en militaire installaties en onophoudelijk sterven in de loopgraven. Al meteen na de brute overval van Rusland op Oekraïne op 24 februari 2022 werden onze Europese leiders op om in actie te komen en met onderhandelingen en diplomatie zo snel mogelijk een einde te maken aan het zinloze sterven en lijden. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:San Diego Comic-Con International is a comic book convention and nonprofit multi-genre entertainment event held annually in San Diego\, California\, since 1970; the name\, as given on its website\, is Comic-Con International: San Diego; but it is commonly known simply as Comic-Con or the San Diego Comic-Con or SDCC. \nThe convention was founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention in 1970 by a group of San Diegans that included Shel Dorf\, Richard Alf\, Ken Krueger\, Ron Graf\, and Mike Towry; later\, it was called the “San Diego Comic Book Convention”\, Dorf said during an interview that he hoped the first Con would bring in 500 attendees. It is a four-day event (Thursday–Sunday) held during the summer (in July since 2003) at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego. On the Wednesday evening prior to the official opening\, professionals\, exhibitors\, and pre-registered guests for all four days can attend a pre-event “Preview Night” to give attendees the opportunity to walk the exhibit hall and see what will be available during the convention. \nComic-Con International also produces WonderCon\, held in Anaheim\, and SAM: Storytelling Across Media\, a conference held in 2016 in San Francisco and beginning in 2018 annually at the Comic-Con Museum in San Diego. Since 1974\, Comic-Con has bestowed its annual Inkpot Award on guests and persons of interest in the popular arts industries\, as well as on members of Comic-Con’s board of directors and the Convention committee. DESCRIPTION:Op Wereld Sjögren Dag wordt wereldwijd de geboortedag (23 juli 1899) van de Zweedse oogarts Henrik Sjögren herdacht\, Sjögren was de ontdekker van de systeemziekte Syndroom van Sjögren en werd naamgever. \nHet vaststellen van deze aandoening heeft veel patiënten geholpen die op zoek waren naar antwoorden op hun gezondheidsproblemen. Het is ook een bewustwordingsdag voor ons allen en geeft tevens alle patiënten die aan deze ziekte lijden of de symptomen hebben de aandacht die ze verdienen. Het Syndroom van Sjögren (Sjögren) is een systemische auto-immuunziekte waarbij vochtafscheidende klieren ontstoken raken en de slijmvliezen in de mond\, de ogen en op alle andere plaatsen in het lichaam uitdrogen. Het Syndroom van Sjögren komt overal ter wereld voor en maakt geen onderscheid qua huidskleur of qua leeftijd. Bij een systeemziekte kunnen ontstekingen in gewrichten en in verschillende organen ontstaan. Een systeemziekte is een auto-immuunziekte\, dit betekent dat afweercellen een ontstekingsreactie beginnen tegen het eigen lichaam. Op dit moment is er geen genezing voor Sjögren\, maar een vroege diagnose en een goede behandeling zijn belangrijk om de ernstiger complicaties van de ziekte te voorkomen en tegelijkertijd de kwaliteit van leven van een patiënt te helpen verbeteren. Gemiddeld duurt het 2\,8 jaar vanaf het moment dat een patiënt een behandeling voor zijn symptomen zoekt tot het ontvangen van een formele diagnose. DESCRIPTION:The European summer of 2026 has so far been characterised by exceptional heat and widespread dryness (Copernicus\, 2026). \nBetween April and June\, large parts of the continent\, from Portugal in the southwest to southern Finland in the northeast\, received below-average rainfall. Combined with successive heatwaves\, these conditions have intensified drought across Europe\, contributing to widespread agricultural and hydrological impacts\, unusually low river levels (NOS\, 2026)\, and severe wildfires\, particularly in Spain and France\, where 116\,000 and 42\,000 hectares have already been burnt\, respectively (EFFIS\, 2026). Although western Europe experienced a relatively wet start to the year\, persistent precipitation deficits in eastern Europe carried over from 2025\, resulting in different types and stages of drought developing across the continent. With forecasts indicating little relief in the near term\, the summer of 2026 is emerging as one of Europe’s most significant heat and drought events in recent years. Scientists from Austria\, Germany\, Hungary\, Latvia\, the Netherlands\, Romania\, Slovenia\, Spain\, Sweden\, Switzerland\, the Czech Republic\, the UK\, and the US used established\, peer-reviewed methods to assess whether\, and to what extent\, climate change influenced the European drought. Drought can be defined in several ways. Meteorological drought is characterised by below average rainfall\, whereas agricultural drought occurs when lack of rainfall or dry soil affects farming and crop growth and is measured by soil moisture or by estimating the balance between rainfall and evapotranspiration over time. Because increased evapotranspiration driven by regional warming can substantially intensify drought impacts\, we separately assess the contributions of both low rainfall and potential evapotranspiration (PET)\, as well as soil moisture. This proposal was announced at WCN\, Council of Delegates meeting on 22 September\, 2013 and the proposal was received with a warm welcome by delegates. The Board of Trustees meeting in February 2014 endorsed this proposal as an annual activity. World Brain Day 2026 is a global call to address these disparities and advocate for change. Science and medicine have made significant progress in understanding the brain\, yet millions of people globally still cannot access essential care. More than 3.4 billion people currently live with neurological conditions\, making brain disorders the leading cause of disability worldwide. DESCRIPTION:De Vierdaagse Nijmegen\, officieel de Internationale Vierdaagse Afstandsmarsen Nijmegen\, is een vierdaags wandelevenement dat sinds 1909 ieder jaar wordt gehouden en start op de derde dinsdag van juli.\n\nHet is de grootste meerdaagse wandelprestatietocht ter wereld en staat inmiddels ook bekend als The Walk of the World. Elk jaar doen er deelnemers uit circa tachtig landen mee\, onder wie een groot aantal militairen. De Vierdaagse kent drie verplichte afstanden: 30\, 40 en 50 kilometer. In de week dat de Vierdaagse Nijmegen wordt gehouden worden in de binnenstad van Nijmegen ook de Vierdaagsefeesten (voorheen Nijmeegse Zomerfeesten) gehouden. In de diverse doorkomstgemeenten van de Vierdaagse Nijmegen worden ook festiviteiten georganiseerd. Vele honderdduizenden supporters van de Vierdaagse zijn de hele Vierdaagseweek in de regio aanwezig. \nGebouw en terreinen van De Vereeniging aan het Keizer Karelplein in Nijmegen zijn langjarig start- en finishplaats en onderkomen van de organisatie geweest. Inmiddels is dat verplaatst naar de nabijgelegen Wedren\, waar met tijdelijke voorzieningen veel meer ruimte is gecreëerd ook in het aangrenzende Julianapark en op het Vierdaagseplein. Gestart wordt in afstandsblokken ’s ochtends vanaf 04:00; de uiterlijke finishtijd is de eerste drie dagen 17:00 en op vrijdag 18:00. Militaire deelnemers starten en melden af op het militaire kamp Heumensoord. \nHet evenement werd sinds 1928 traditioneel geopend met een vlaggenparade; sinds 1951 werd deze kleurrijke deelnemersontvangst in Stadion De Goffert in Nijmegen gehouden. In 2011 werd de vlaggenparade voor de laatste keer gehouden vanwege de teruglopende belangstelling. DESCRIPTION:Global hunger declined for a third consecutive year in 2025\, demonstrating that progress is possible. However\, the improvements remain fragile\, unevenly distributed and insufficient to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030\, according to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026 (SOFI 2026) report\, released on Tuesday by five United Nations specialized agencies. \nThe report estimates that 7.8 percent of the global population faced hunger in 2025\, down from 8.1 percent in 2024 and 8.6 percent in 2022\, confirming a sustained\, albeit slow\, improvement. This means that around 645 million people were affected by hunger in 2025\, representing a reduction of nearly 14 million compared to 2024 and 43 million compared to 2022. Despite global progress\, recovery remains uneven across regions. Asia\, together with Latin America and the Caribbean\, has recorded steady improvements in recent years. In contrast\, Africa is now home to approximately 309 million hungry people\, compared with 292 million in Asia. Although Africa’s previously rising trend is beginning to stabilize\, with the share of its population facing hunger decreasing from 20.3 percent in 2024 to 20.0 percent in 2025\, the continent now has the highest number of hungry people in absolute terms amid a rapidly growing population. Broader measures of food access tell a similar story. In 2025\, an estimated 25.8 percent of the global population (around 2.1 billion people) experienced moderate or severe food insecurity\, meaning they were at times forced to compromise on the quality or quantity of the food they ate. This is down from 27.1 percent in 2024 and 28.7 percent in 2020 – equivalent to nearly 86 million fewer people than in 2024 and 135 million fewer than in 2020\, though still above pre-pandemic levels. Regional disparities remain stark. More than half of Africa’s population (56.6 percent) faced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2025\, compared to 20.3 percent in Asia\, 22.9 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean\, and 8.7 percent in Northern America and Europe. Hoe ga je verder met je dagelijks leven\, als je weet dat elders op de wereld verschrikkelijke bosbranden gaande zijn? Bosbranden gaande zijn? Kan dat eigenlijk? Niet wegkijken van al die gevolgen van de klimaatcrisis en toch iets van levensgeluk vasthouden? Het leven ondanks alles blijven vieren? Velen van ons hebben besloten om zich in te zetten om de klimaatcrisis aan te pakken. Dat kan zijn door plantaardig te eten\, of minder plastic te gebruiken. Anderen gaan het gesprek aan in hun omgeving om bewustwording te vergroten. Of gaan over tot actie\, samen met één van de milieu-organisaties als Milieudefensie\, Greenpeace of Extinction Rebellion. \nVoor zoveel mogelijk mensen die boos\, bezorgd of verdrietig zijn over het klimaat en geïnspireerd zijn om iets te veranderen aan de toestand van het klimaat. Activisten\, bezorgde mensen\, religieus en niet-religieus\, jongeren en volwassenen. Bezoekers van de Klimaatwakes zoeken inspiratie om zich actief in te zetten. Samen delen waar je bang voor bent\, omdat je niet wilt wegkijken\, maar klimaat-rampen onder ogen zien\, geeft troost. Soms merk je dat je inzet tegen de klimaatcrisis je kan vervreemden of isoleren van je vrienden of familie. Of je kan je verdrietig en gefrustreerd voelen dat er zo slecht geluisterd wordt door overheid en bedrijven. De Klimaatwakes zijn een plek waar zorgen over de toekomst van de aarde gedeeld kunnen worden. \nDirk de Bekker schreef ‘Het pesticidenparadijs’ Over de impact van bestrijdingsmiddelen\, verstrengelde belangen en misbruikte wetenschap. Pesticiden beschermen ons tegen plagen en ziekten\, maar zijn inmiddels zelf uitgegroeid tot ziekmakende plaag. DESCRIPTION:The Viking program consisted of a pair of identical American space probes\, Viking 1 and Viking 2 both launched in 1975\, and landed on Mars in 1976. \nThe mission effort began in 1968 and was managed by the NASA Langley Research Center. Each spacecraft was composed of two main parts: an orbiter spacecraft which photographed the surface of Mars from orbit\, and a lander which studied the planet from the surface. The orbiters also served as communication relays for the landers once they touched down. The Viking program grew from NASA’s earlier\, even more ambitious\, Voyager Mars program\, which was not related to the successful Voyager deep space probes of the late 1970s. Viking 1 was launched on August 20\, 1975\, and the second craft\, Viking 2\, was launched on September 9\, 1975\, both riding atop Titan IIIE rockets with Centaur upper stages. Viking 1 entered Mars orbit on June 19\, 1976\, with Viking 2 following on August 7. After orbiting Mars for more than a month and returning images used for landing site selection\, the orbiters and landers detached; the landers then entered the Martian atmosphere and soft-landed at the sites that had been chosen. The Viking 1 lander touched down on the surface of Mars on July 20\, 1976\, more than two weeks before Viking 2‘s arrival in orbit. Viking 2 then successfully soft-landed on September 3. The orbiters continued imaging and performing other scientific operations from orbit while the landers deployed instruments on the surface. DESCRIPTION:On 12 December 2019\, the General Assembly proclaimed 20 July as World Chess Day to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. \nChess is a two player strategy board game where the aim is to move different types of playing piece\, each with a prescribed set of possible moves\, around a chequered square board trying to capture the opponents ‘king’ piece. Today there are over 2\,000 identifiable variants of the game. One theory is that an early game similar to chess called Chaturanga originated in Northern Indian Subcontinent during the Gupta period (~ 319 – 543 CE) and spread along the Silk Roads west to Persia. Whilst modern Chess is believed to have been derived from Chaturanga means ‘four divisions’ referring either to the divisions of the playing pieces into infantry\, cavalry\, elephantry and chariotry (pieces which in the modern game became the pawn\, knight\, bishop and rook)\, or to the fact that the game was played by four players. Chatrang\, and later Shatranj\, was the name given to the game when it arrived in Sassanid Persia around 600 CE. \nThe earliest reference to the game comes from a Persian manuscript of around 600 CE\, which describes an ambassador from the Indian Subcontinent visiting king Khosrow I (531 – 579 CE) and presenting him with the game as a gift. From there it spread along the Silk to other regions including the Arabian Peninsula and Byzantium. In 900 CE\, Abbasid chess masters al-Suli and al-Lajlaj composed works on the techniques and strategy of the game\, and by 1000 CE Chess was popular across Europe\, and in Russia where it was introduced from the Eurasian Steppe. The Alfonso manuscripts\, also known as the Libro de los Juegos (Book of Games)\, a medieval collection of texts on three different types of popular game from the 13th century CE describe the game of Chess as very similar to Persian Shatranj in rules and gameplay. \nUnder initiative of FIDE\, July 20 has been observed as International Chess Day by chess players around the world since 1966. The designation of World Chess Day of the UN will not only recognize the important role of the FIDE in supporting international cooperation for chess activity and aiming to improve friendly harmony among all peoples of the world\, but also to provide an important platform to foster\, dialogue\, solidarity and culture of peace. \nThe United Nations recognizes that sports\, the arts and physical activity have the power to change perceptions\, prejudices and behaviours\, as well as to inspire people\, break down racial and political barriers\, combat discrimination and defuse conflict\, and therefore contribute in promoting education\, sustainable development\, peace\, cooperation\, solidarity\, social inclusion and health at the local\, regional and international levels. Chess is one of the most ancient\, intellectual and cultural games\, with a combination of sport\, scientific thinking and elements of art. As an affordable and inclusive activity\, it can be exercised anywhere and played by all\, across the barriers of language\, age\, gender\, physical ability or social status. \nChess is a global game\, which promotes fairness\, inclusion and mutual respect\, and noting in this regard that it can contribute to an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding among peoples and nations. Chess also offers important opportunities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals\, including strengthening education\, realizing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls and fostering inclusion\, tolerance\, mutual understanding and respect. \nLinks:\nWorld Chess Day
