DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is a time for reflection\, but it is also a time for education. \nDespite myths to the contrary\, enslaved Africans enriched the Americas not just through their labour but also through a transfer of vital skills and knowledge. In addition\, rather than accepting their fate\, they engaged in powerful acts of resistance. The United Nations works to highlight such stories through its Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery\, which is managed by the Department of Global Communications\, and the Routes of Enslaved Peoples Project\, which is run by the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In 2006\, the United Nations General Assembly\, through resolution 61/19\, recognized that “the slave trade and slavery are among the worst violations of human rights in the history of humanity\, bearing in mind particularly their scale and duration” and designated 25 March 2007 as the International Day for the Commemoration of the Two-hundredth Anniversary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. \nThe following year\, through resolution 62/122\, it designated 25 March as an annual International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, beginning in 2008. The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was passed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 1807. From that day on\, “all manner of dealing and reading in the purchase\, sale\, barter\, or transfer of slaves or of persons intending to be sold\, transferred\, used\, or dealt with as slaves\, practiced or carried in\, at\, or from any part of the coast or countries of Africa shall be abolished\, prohibited and declared to be unlawful”. However\, while the act abolished the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans\, it did not abolish slavery\, which still continued for decades. DESCRIPTION:The Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members is marked each year on the anniversary of the abduction of Alec Collett\, a former journalist who was working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) when he was abducted by armed gunman in 1985; his body was finally found in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley in 2009. \nThe Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members has taken on even greater importance in recent years\, as attacks against the United Nations intensify.  This is a day to mobilize action\, demand justice and strengthen their resolve to protect UN staff and peacekeepers\, as well as their colleagues in the non-governmental community and the press. Since the founding of the United Nations in 1945\, hundreds of brave men and women have lost their lives in its service. During the 1990s\, the growing number and scale of UN peacekeeping missions put many more at risk. Hoe ga je verder met je dagelijks leven\, als je weet dat elders op de wereld verschrikkelijke bosbranden gaande zijn? Bosbranden gaande zijn? Kan dat eigenlijk? Niet wegkijken van al die gevolgen van de klimaatcrisis en toch iets van levensgeluk vasthouden? Het leven ondanks alles blijven vieren? Velen van ons hebben besloten om zich in te zetten om de klimaatcrisis aan te pakken. Dat kan zijn door plantaardig te eten\, of minder plastic te gebruiken. Anderen gaan het gesprek aan in hun omgeving om bewustwording te vergroten. Of gaan over tot actie\, samen met één van de milieu-organisaties als Milieudefensie\, Greenpeace of Extinction Rebellion. \nVoor zoveel mogelijk mensen die boos\, bezorgd of verdrietig zijn over het klimaat en geïnspireerd zijn om iets te veranderen aan de toestand van het klimaat. Activisten\, bezorgde mensen\, religieus en niet-religieus\, jongeren en volwassenen. Bezoekers van de Klimaatwakes zoeken inspiratie om zich actief in te zetten. Samen delen waar je bang voor bent\, omdat je niet wilt wegkijken\, maar klimaat-rampen onder ogen zien\, geeft troost. Soms merk je dat je inzet tegen de klimaatcrisis je kan vervreemden of isoleren van je vrienden of familie. Of je kan je verdrietig en gefrustreerd voelen dat er zo slecht geluisterd wordt door overheid en bedrijven. De Klimaatwakes zijn een plek waar zorgen over de toekomst van de aarde gedeeld kunnen worden. \nOp 24 maart was de spreker bij de Klimaatwake Lucas Winnips\, woordvoerder bij Extinction Rebellion en organisator van #StopfossieleSubsidies. Winnips: “Door de frames die op aktievoeren worden gelegd\, zoals: ‘Aktievoeren heeft geen zin’\, en: ‘De mensen willen XR niet meer!’ en: ‘Het thema Klimaat is een luxe\, er zijn nu urgentere problemen!’\, zou je bijna de moed verliezen. Maar vreedzame burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid werkt en is noodzakelijk! De VN-klimaatrapporteur verklaarde vreedzame burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid voor het Klimaat legitiem en legaal. Daarom maakt Winnips tijdens de Klimaatwake van 24 maart bekend wat de grote voorjaarsaktie van Extinction Rebellion zal zijn tegen de fossiele subsidies. Het is belangrijk dat er meer parttime banen komen van 4\, 5 of 6 uur per dag\, zodat veel meer mensen de mogelijkheid krijgen om te werken. Ook als jou dit nu niet raakt: ziekte of zorg kan iedereen treffen. Meer ruimte voor parttime werken vergroot de kans voor velen. Delen wordt gewaardeerd: met je netwerk\, vakbonden\, politieke partijen en via social media. DESCRIPTION:The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Panel meets in plenary session about twice a year. It may meet more often for the approval of reports. \nThe Panel controls the IPCC’s structure\, procedures\, work programme\, and budget and accepts and approves IPCC reports. The Panel is the IPCC corporate entity. The IPCC is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations (UN). Its job is to “provide governments at all levels with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies“. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) set up the IPCC in 1988. The UN endorsed the creation of the IPCC later that year. It has a secretariat in Geneva\, Switzerland\, hosted by the WMO. It has 195 member states who govern the IPCC. The member states elect a bureau of scientists to serve through an assessment cycle. A cycle is usually six to seven years. The bureau selects experts in their fields to prepare IPCC reports. There is a formal nomination process by governments and observer organizations to find these experts. Monsignor Romero was actively engaged in denouncing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable individuals in El Salvador. DESCRIPTION:The experiment successfully transported a trap filled with antiprotons across CERN’s main site\, a remarkable first step towards delivering antimatter to other European laboratories. \na team of scientists from the BASE experiment at CERN successfully transported a trap filled with antiprotons in a truck across the Laboratory’s main site. The team managed to accumulate a cloud of 92 antiprotons in an innovative portable cryogenic Penning trap\, then disconnect it from the experimental facility\, load it onto a truck and continue experiment operation after transport. This is a remarkable achievement\, given that antimatter is very difficult to preserve\, as it annihilates upon contact with matter. This world premiere is a test\, the ultimate aim being to transport antiprotons to other European laboratories\, such as Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU)\, where very-high-precision measurements of the antiproton properties could be performed. Antimatter is a naturally occurring class of particles that is almost identical to ordinary matter except that the electric charge and magnetic moment are reversed. According to the laws of physics\, the Big Bang should have produced equal amounts of matter and antimatter. These equal-but-opposite particles would have quickly annihilated each other\, leaving an empty Universe. However\, our Universe contains predominantly matter\, and this imbalance has baffled scientists for decades. DESCRIPTION:Volgens onderzoek van het Ministerie van Sociale Zekerheid en Welzijn (2024)\, ervaren van de ruim 2 miljoen Aziatische Nederlanders\, 1 op de 3 racisme en discriminatie\, onder Chinese Nederlanders is dat zelfs 1 op de 2. \nEn nog steeds wordt anti-Aziatisch racisme niet gezien. Niet begrepen. En keer op keer gedoogd. “Genoeg is genoeg\,” zei Ruud de Wild op maandag 23 maart 2026. Maar dat is juist wat Aziatische Nederlanders al jaren zeggen. In 2020 zei DeGoedeZaak het al in de petitie ‘Wij zijn geen virussen‘\, die door meer dan 65.000 mensen werd ondertekend. Zij maken nog elke dag racisme mee. Op radio. Op tv. In campagnes. In klaslokalen. Steeds opnieuw hetzelfde beeld: Aziaten als grap. Als stereotype. Als karikatuur. [1] Dit is niet onschuldig\, maar leidt ook tot verbaal en fysiek geweld! Daarom moeten we nu in actie komen en de normalisering van deze vorm van racisme stoppen. Het is belangrijk dat dit niet wordt weggewuifd! Er moet verantwoordelijkheid worden genomen door de media die macht heeft over wat als ‘normaal’ gezien wordt. Daarom vragen we de minister van Onderwijs\, Cultuur en Wetenschap deze verantwoordelijkheid te nemen. Er moeten nu stappen genomen worden tegen de normalisering van anti-Aziatisch racisme. Zolang racisme wordt weggewoven\, groeit het. Daarin mogen we niet selectief zijn. Als we niet alle vormen van racisme serieus nemen\, beschermen we uiteindelijk niemand. Voor het racisme en geweld dat Aziatische Nederlanders nu mee maken\, moeten we de volgende generatie beschermen. Daarvoor is nu actie nodig! DESCRIPTION:Op zaterdag 21 maart 2026 hebben rebellen van Extinction Rebellion 3 gasboringslocaties bezet met als eis aan het nieuwe kabinet: Gaskraan dicht! \nDe rebellen zijn over de hekken geklommen en hebben op een veilige manier het gaswinningsterrein betreden. Extinction Rebellion eist dat het kabinet zorgt voor een snelle en ruimhartige schadeafhandeling\, alle gasvelden direct permanent sluit\, geen nieuwe meer opent en verdere klimaatschade een halt toeroept. De meeste mensen denken dat er geen gas meer gewonnen wordt in Groningen\, maar niets is minder waar: van de 84 actieve gasvelden liggen er maar liefst 17 in Groningen en in de rest van het land dus ook nog 67. Gasboringen veroorzaken niet alleen scheuren in huizen\, cultureel erfgoed en bodemverzakkingen\, ze veroorzaken ook scheuren in de hoofden\, harten en lichamen van vele Groningers. In Groningen overlijden op basis van onderzoek van Gronings Perspectief jaarlijks naar schatting 16 mensen voortijdig als gevolg van ernstige gezondheidsklachten door de gaswinning. DESCRIPTION:The strong and continuous increase of AI-based services leads to the steady proliferation of AI data centres worldwide with the unavoidable escalation of their power consumption\, it is unknown how this energy demand for computational purposes will impact the surrounding environment\, scientists report in the paper ‘The data heat island effect: quantifying the impact of AI data centers in a warming world‘. \nData centres built to power AIs produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees – creating so-called data centre heat islands that may already be affecting up to 340 million people. The number of data centres built around the world is forecast to rise enormously\, data centre capacity will double between 2025 and 2030 – with AI expected to account for half that demand. Andrea Marinoni at the University of Cambridge\, UK\, and his colleagues saw that the amount of energy needed to run a data centre had been steadily increasing of late and was likely to “explode” in the coming years\, so wanted to quantify the impact. The researchers took satellite measurements of land surface temperatures over the past 20 years and cross-referenced them against the geographical coordinates of more than 8400 AI data centres. Recognising that surface temperature could be affected by other factors\, the researchers chose to focus their investigation on data centres located away from densely populated areas. They discovered that land surface temperatures increased by an average of 2°C in the months after an AI data centre started operations. In the most extreme cases\, the increase in temperature was 9.1°C. The effect wasn’t limited to the immediate surroundings of the data centres: the team found increased temperatures up to 10 kilometres away. Seven kilometres away\, there was only a 30 per cent reduction in the intensity. Using population data\, the researchers estimate that more than 340 million people live within 10 kilometres of data centres\, so live in a place that is warmer than it would be if the data centre hadn’t been built there. Marinoni says that areas including the Bajío region in Mexico and the Aragon province in Spain saw a 2°C temperature increase in the 20 years between 2004 and 2024 that couldn’t otherwise be explained. Chris Preist at the University of Bristol\, UK\, says the results may be more nuanced than they first appear\, suggesting that the building being heated by sunlight may be part of the effect. Either way\, the data centre is still increasing the ground temperature\, says Marinoni. \nLinks:\nAI data centres can warm surrounding areas by up to 9.1°C
