DESCRIPTION:Zwemmen en recreëren in buitenwater leveren een belangrijke bijdrage aan gezondheid\, welzijn en leefomgeving maar hoe gezond is ons buitenwater voor mens en natuur? \nOp basis van openbaar beschikbare meet- en monitoringsgegevens van 2015 tot en met 2024\, blijkt dat de waterkwaliteit in Nederlandse zwemwateren stagneert. Dat geldt zowel voor wateren die officieel zijn aangewezen om in te zwemmen\, als voor onofficiële zwemwateren waarin veel wordt gezwommen. Vrijwel in alle onderzochte zwemwateren komen chemische normoverschrijdingen voor. Het onderzoek ‘Zorgen over zwemwater‘ van Natuur & Milieu en het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) laat zien dat voor 35 van de 122 gemonitorde chemische stoffen normoverschrijdingen plaatsvinden in wateren met officiële en onofficiële zwemlocaties. Voor sommige stoffen worden de normen op meer dan 90 procent van de onderzochte locaties overschreden. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAn international team including Nobel Prize-winning physicist Professor Sir Roger Penrose has observed a long-predicted effect of gravity on a falling quantum object for the first time. \nThe result shows that a fundamental principle at the heart of Einstein’s theory of gravity remains consistent with the behaviour of matter in the quantum world. The study ‘Observation of the quantum phase of free fall and the consistency with the equivalence principle‘\, led by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev\, The University of Ulm and the University of Oxford\, has been published in Science Advances. For more than a century\, physicists have relied on two extraordinarily successful descriptions of nature. Quantum mechanics explains the strange behaviour of atoms and other tiny objects. Einstein’s theory of gravity explains how objects fall and how gravity shapes the Universe. Yet physicists still do not fully understand how the two fit together. Now\, an international team has performed an experiment that probes the point where they meet. In the study\, the researchers observed a distinctive change in the quantum properties of atoms as they fell under gravity. Crucially\, the effect they measured is the same one predicted when Einstein’s equivalence principle\, a cornerstone of his theory of gravity\, is applied to a quantum object. The equivalence principle states that for an observer in free fall\, gravity should locally disappear. Someone falling freely in a lift\, for example\, would experience weightlessness. Whilst this theory has survived extraordinarily precise tests involving ordinary matter\, it was unclear how this could be experimentally tested with quantum objects\, which can behave as waves and effectively travel along more than one path. At the heart of the experiment is a new apparatus the researchers call the Quantum Galileo Interferometer. De brief is onder meer ondertekend door de oud-politici Job Cohen\, Jozias van Aartsen\, Jan Pronk en Ahmed Aboutaleb. Voormalig diplomaat Angélique Eijpe is ook een van de ondertekenaars. DESCRIPTION:De meteorenzwerm Aurigiden bereikt op dinsdag 1 september 2026\, rond 14:00\, zijn maximum. \nZelfs wanneer de radiant in het zenit zou staan\, zouden er van deze zwerm naar verwachting gemiddeld slechts zo’n 4 meteoren per uur vallen. Rond 09:00 staat de radiant van de zwerm in het hoogste punt (op 77°) aan de hemel. Het beste moment om Aurigiden waar te nemen is op 1 september rond 05:30. De radiant staat op dat moment zo’n 53° boven de horizon\, in het oosten. Er is dan bij ons ieder uur niet meer dan één meteoor zichtbaar van deze zwerm. Samen met meteoren van andere zwermen\, en sporadische meteoren\, zijn er bij donkere\, heldere hemel in totaal circa 1–5 meteoren per uur zichtbaar. De Maan is voor ongeveer 85% verlicht en kan dit jaar flink storen; de zwakkere meteoren zullen hierdoor niet zichtbaar zijn. Rond 06:15 gaat het schemeren en om 06:51 komt de Zon op. Over het algemeen zijn de de meteoren van een zwerm niet alleen op de dag van het maximum zichtbaar. Zo is gedurende circa 2\,8 dagen rondom het maximum meer dan de helft van het maximale aantal meteoren van de Aurigiden te zien. De zwerm heeft daarmee een relatief korte piek. Probeer dus ook enkele nachten voor en na het maximum meteoren waar te nemen. Iedere dag verder weg van het maximum zijn er echter wel ongeveer 40% minder meteoren per uur te zien. DESCRIPTION:Op 31 augustus 2026 begint het derde seizoen bij RTL 4 van LUBACH\, een Nederlands satirisch nieuws- en praatprogramma gepresenteerd door Arjen Lubach. \nDe eerste aflevering op 24 maart 2025 werd uitgezonden door de commerciële televisiezender RTL 4. Arjen Lubach presenteerde bij de VPRO vanaf 2022 het dagelijkse programma De Avondshow met Arjen Lubach\, en daarvoor vanaf 2014 het wekelijkse Zondag met Lubach. In het voorjaar van 2024 maakte hij echter bekend te vertrekken bij de omroep. De presentator maakte in het najaar van dat jaar nog één nieuw seizoen voor de omroep\, maar trok daarna de deur achter zich dicht. In november 2024 kondigde Arjen Lubach een overstap aan naar de commerciële omroep RTL Nederland. Volgens de presentator was het een optelsom van dingen die hem deed besluiten over te stappen met zijn team. Voor RTL zou hij op hun hoofdzender RTL 4 een soortgelijk programma maken met zijn vaste team van Human Factor. LUBACH is elke maandag tot en met donderdag te zien op RTL 4 en Videoland. Een aflevering bestaat uit de volgende delen: \n\nDe aflevering wordt geopend door Arjen Lubach met een korte samenvatting van het laatste nieuws. It also provides an opportunity to strengthen collaboration among the United Nations\, Member States\, civil society\, and people of African descent to advance the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide. The 2026 observance seeks to expand the human rights of people of African descent through stronger legal\, policy\, and institutional measures to combat racism\, racial discrimination\, xenophobia\, and related intolerance. \nIt also underscores the importance of ensuring the full enjoyment of economic\, social\, cultural\, civil\, and political rights\, while advancing equal access to education\, employment\, healthcare\, housing\, and economic opportunities. DESCRIPTION:Zomergasten was een Nederlands televisieprogramma van de VPRO dat tot en met 2026 elk jaar in de zomer\, meer bepaald rond augustus\, op zondagavond rechtstreeks werd uitgezonden. \nHet programma bestond sinds 1988. In een avondvullend programma mocht iedere zondag een bekende of interessante Nederlander\, Vlaming of Nederlandssprekende buitenlander zijn of haar favoriete televisieavond samenstellen. De gast komt meestal uit de literatuur\, wetenschap\, televisie\, de politiek of het bedrijfsleven. De gekozen fragmenten worden getoond en aan de hand daarvan wordt de gast geïnterviewd door een interviewer/presentator. Het programma is gaandeweg uitgegroeid tot een van de bekendste programma’s van de Nederlandse publieke omroep. Sinds 2003 wordt na elke aflevering een film uitgezonden die door de gast van de avond is uitgekozen. Janine Abbring presenteert het allerlaatste seizoen van VPRO Zomergasten. Ze was tussen 2017 en 2022 al te zien als vaste interviewer van het programma. Van 26 juli tot en met 30 augustus is VPRO Zomergasten elke zondagavond live te zien op NPO 2 en NPO Start. \nPsychiater Jim van Os (Utrecht\, 1960) is op zondag 30 augustus de zesde en allerlaatste gast in VPRO Zomergasten. Janine Abbring interviewt hem aan de hand van door hem geselecteerde tv-\, online- en filmfragmenten. Van Os: ‘Met mijn fragmentkeuzes wil ik laten zien wat film wél kan laten zien als het over waanzin gaat\, wat je met pure wetenschap misloopt.’ Jim van Os geldt als een van de meest invloedrijke en vernieuwende denkers binnen de internationale geestelijke gezondheidszorg. Hij is als hoogleraar Psychiatrische Epidemiologie verbonden aan het Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht (UMC) en is er voorzitter van de divisie Hersenen. Van Os staat bekend om zijn kritiek op de traditionele psychiatrie en pleit voor een zorgsysteem dat niet vertrekt vanuit rigide medische labels\, maar vanuit de sociale context en de persoonlijke ervaringen van de patiënt. Jim van Os groeide op in Haarlem. Zijn vader\, gynaecoloog\, kwam na de Tweede Wereldoorlog getraumatiseerd door zijn ervaringen in een ‘jappenkamp’ vanuit Nederlands-Indië naar Nederland. Zijn moeder werkte als vertaalster. Na zijn studie geneeskunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam werkte Jim van Os in Marokko\, Indonesië en Frankrijk. Als beginnend arts zag hij in een inrichting nabij Bordeaux van dichtbij hoe patiënten vaak jarenlang werden opgesloten en verwaarloosd\, en hoge doses medicatie kregen toegediend. Deze periode raakte een wezenlijke persoonlijke snaar: van Os raakte zelf in een psychotische ontregeling\, maar een collega greep vroeg in. \nHet legde de kiem voor zijn overtuiging dat ‘waanzin’ geen hersenziekte is die je wel of niet hebt\, maar een menselijke variatie die in ons allemaal zit. Van Os specialiseerde zich vervolgens tot psychiater aan King’s College in Londen\, waarna hij een onderzoeksbeurs ontving voor de prestigieuze London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In 1995 keerde hij terug naar Nederland om te promoveren en werd hij hoogleraar Psychiatrische Epidemiologie aan de Universiteit Maastricht. Hier leidde hij de vakgroep Psychiatrie en Neuropsychologie\, totdat hij in 2017 overstapte naar het UMC Utrecht. Naast zijn klinische werk bouwde Van Os aan een omvangrijk en grensverleggend wetenschappelijk oeuvre. In 2014 werd hij door het Thomson-Reuters Web of Science uitgeroepen tot een van ‘the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds’. Tot zijn bekendste boeken behoren De DSM-5 voorbij (2014) en het recent verschenen Kopzorgen. Psychedelica begrijpen in 33 vragen (2024\, met Simona Karbouniaris). In februari 2026 trok hij internationaal de aandacht met een opinieartikel in Nature\, waarin hij pleit voor de definitieve afschaffing van de DSM\, het voor de psychiatrie leidende diagnostisch handboek. Eind augustus 2026 verschijnt zijn nieuwe boek Wat psychisch lijden is. DESCRIPTION:On 21 December 2010\, by its resolution 65/209 the UN General Assembly expressed its deep concern about the increase in enforced or involuntary disappearances in various regions of the world\, including arrest\, detention and abduction\, when these are part of or amount to enforced disappearances\, and by the growing number of reports concerning harassment\, ill-treatment and intimidation of witnesses of disappearances or relatives of persons who have disappeared. \nBy the same resolution the Assembly welcomed the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance\, and decided to declare 30 August the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances\, to be observed beginning in 2011. According to the Declaration on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance\, proclaimed by the General Assembly in its resolution 47/133 of 18 December 1992 as a body of principles for all States\, an enforced disappearance occurs when: \n“persons are arrested\, detained or abducted against their will or otherwise deprived of their liberty by officials of different branches or levels of Government\, or by organized groups or private individuals acting on behalf of\, or with the support\, direct or indirect\, consent or acquiescence of the Government\, followed by a refusal to disclose the fate or whereabouts of the persons concerned or a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of their liberty\, which places such persons outside the protection of the law.” \n2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances\, the only universal treaty specifically dedicated to preventing and eradicating enforced disappearances. Under the slogan “Victims first. Actions now” \, the anniversary puts victims and their rights to truth\, justice and reparation at the centre\, while calling on States and other stakeholders to act to prevent enforced disappearances. Twenty years after the Convention’s adoption\, enforced disappearances continue to occur in every region\, making universal ratification and full implementation an urgent priority. Throughout 2026\, CED20 will bring together States\, victims\, civil society\, national human rights institutions\, UN entities and partners to raise awareness\, share concrete actions and strengthen protections. Enforced disappearance has frequently been used as a strategy to spread terror within the society. The feeling of insecurity generated by this practice is not limited to the close relatives of the disappeared\, but also affects their communities and society as a whole. Enforced disappearance has become a global problem and is not restricted to a specific region of the world. Once largely the product of military dictatorships\, enforced disappearances can nowadays be perpetrated in complex situations of internal conflict\, especially as a means of political repression of opponents. DESCRIPTION:The International Day against Nuclear Tests\, together with other events and actions\, has fostered a global environment that strongly advocates for a world free of nuclear weapons. \nSince nuclear weapons testing began on 16 July 1945\, nearly 2\,000 have taken place. In the early days of nuclear testing little consideration was given to its devastating effects on human life\, let alone the dangers of nuclear fallout from atmospheric tests. Hindsight and history have shown us the terrifying and tragic effects of nuclear weapons testing\, especially when controlled conditions go awry\, and in light of the far more powerful and destructive nuclear weapons that exist today. On 2 December 2009\, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting resolution 64/35. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.” The resolution was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan\, together with a large number of sponsors and cosponsors with a view to commemorating the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site on 29 August 1991. \n2010 marked the inaugural commemoration of the International Day against Nuclear Tests. In each subsequent year\, the day has been observed by coordinating various activities throughout the world\, such as symposia\, conferences\, exhibits\, competitions\, publications\, lectures\, media broadcasts and other initiatives. Since its establishment\, many bilateral and multilateral governmental level developments as well as broad movements in civil society have helped to advance the cause of banning nuclear tests. Moreover\, “convinced that nuclear disarmament and the total elimination of nuclear weapons are the only absolute guarantee against the use or threat of nuclear weapons\,” the General Assembly designated 26 September as the “Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons“\, which is devoted to furthering the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons\, through the mobilization of international efforts. \nThe International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons was observed for the first time in September 2014. The international instrument to put an end to all forms of nuclear testing is the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Unfortunately\, this has yet to enter into force. As the Secretary-General recognized in his disarmament agenda “Securing our Common Future” launched on 24 May 2018\, the norm against testing is an example of a measure that serves both disarmament and non-proliferation objectives. By constraining the development of advanced new types of nuclear weapons\, the CTBT puts a brake on the arms race. It also serves as a powerful normative barrier against potential States that might seek to develop\, manufacture and subsequently acquire nuclear weapons in violation of their non-proliferation commitments. \nEvery effort needs to be made to ensure the entry into force of the CTBT and to preserve its place in the international architecture. In this regard\, the Secretary-General appeals to all remaining States whose ratifications are required for the CTBT to enter into force to commit to sign the Treaty at an early date if they have not already done so\, and to accelerate the completion of their ratification processes. It is the hope of the UN that one day all nuclear weapons will be eliminated. DESCRIPTION:August 29\, 2026 was the 12th World Day for the End of Speciesism. \nOnce again\, numerous animal advocacy groups around the world organized demonstrations to denounce speciesist discrimination. The World Day promotes five central demands to bring about an animal-inclusive society\, including abolishing the property status of animals and shutting down slaughterhouses. Speciesism is an ideology that considers the lives and interests of animals as not worthy of respect simply because they belong to another species. The notion of speciesism can be understood by analogy with racism or sexism; speciesism tends to place animals outside the range of moral consideration.
