DESCRIPTION:The General Assembly of the United Nations decided to proclaim 6 April as “International Day of Sport for Development and Peace” (IDSDP)\, this date commemorates the inauguration\, in 1896\, of the first Olympic games of the modern era\, in Athens (Greece). \nOn August 23\, 2013\, the General Assembly of the United Nations in Resolution 67/296 decides to proclaim on April 6 International Day of the Sport for the Development and the Peace. The UN\, with this commemoration\, “invites States\, the United Nations system and in particular the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace\, relevant international organizations\, and international\, regional and national sports organizations\, civil society\, including non-governmental organizations and the private sector\, and all other relevant stakeholders to cooperate\, observe and raise awareness of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace”. IDSDP presents an opportunity to recognize the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and in people’s lives across the globe. Sport has the power to change the world; it is a fundamental right and a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and promote sustainable development and peace\, as well as solidarity and respect for all. From empowering women and girls\, young people\, persons with disabilities\, and other marginalized groups to advancing health\, sustainability\, and education objectives\, sport offers tremendous potential for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and for promoting peace and human rights. The United Nations has long recognized the power and universality of sport\, using it to unite individuals and groups through supporting sport for development efforts\, participating in events from the global to the grassroots level\, and developing its own sports-related campaigns and initiatives. \nThe 2026 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace will spotlight the theme “Sport: Building Bridges\, Breaking Barriers\,” underscoring sport’s unique capacity to foster connection\, inclusion\, and peace in an increasingly fragmented world. As a universal language that transcends cultural\, social\, and boundaries\, sport serves as a powerful catalyst for social transformation. DESCRIPTION:First Contact Day is a holiday celebrated in the Federation on April 5\, marking the anniversaries of the flight of the Phoenix and of first contact between Humans and Vulcans on April 5th\, 2063 in Bozeman\, Montana. \nThe holiday also shares the same date as the Day of Honor in the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Republic’s Republic Day. While not a major holiday\, Naomi Wildman and Neelix planned an elaborate celebration aboard the USS Voyager in 2377\, including cheese pierogies\, rock and roll music\, and a reenactment of the historic first contact by Lieutenant Commander Tuvok. The day often meant a day off from school for Federation youth. (VOY episode: “Homestead”\, ST website: Startrek.com). In 2381\, Admiral Leonard James Akaar planned to have the USS Titan relaunched on First Contact Day\, as part of a morale-boosting effort following the Borg Invasion earlier that year. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace). First Contact Day was a holiday celebrated to honor both the warp 1 flight of the Phoenix and first open contact between Humans and Vulcans (Star Trek: First Contact). On Earth\, children were given a day off from school\, a fact that Captain Kathryn Janeway remembered was really the only way it was celebrated. \nNaomi Wildman and Neelix planned the 315th observation of the event aboard the USS Voyager. The festivities included Zefram Cochrane’s favorite food\, cheese pierogies\, and rock and roll music on Tom Paris’s jukebox. At Neelix’s insistence\, Tuvok gave the Vulcan salute while reciting the greeting given by the Vulcans during first contact: “Live long and prosper.” He did not see the point of it\, but everyone in attendance applauded. DESCRIPTION:Op 04-04-1968 werd Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, oorspronkelijk Michael Luther King\, Jr. (*Atlanta\, Georgia 15-01-1929) neergeschoten op het balkon van het Lorraine Motel\, Memphis\, Tennessee (sinds 1991 een burgerrechtenmuseum). \nHij werd met spoed naar het St. Joseph’s Hospital gebracht\, waar hij om 19:05 (CST) dood werd verklaard. Martin Luther King was een Amerikaanse baptistische dominee\, politiek leider en een van de meest prominente leden van de Afro-Amerikaanse burgerrechtenbeweging\, bekend door zijn geweldloze aanpak en burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid\, en winnaar van de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede. Voor velen is Martin Luther King een symbool voor de burgerrechtenbeweging in de Verenigde Staten gebleven. De moord leidde tot een golf van onlusten in meer dan 60 Amerikaanse steden\, waarbij 39 doden vielen. DESCRIPTION:On 8 December 2005\, the General Assembly declared that 4 April of each year shall be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. \nIt called for continued efforts by States\, with the assistance of the United Nations and relevant organizations\, to foster the establishment and development of national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety\, health and lives of the civilian population\, or an impediment to social and economic development at the national and local levels. Established in 1997\, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines\, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action\, leading operational responses at the country level\, and in support of peace operations\, as well as through the development of standards\, policies and norms. \nIn 2026\, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action will be commemorated under the theme “Invest in Peace; Invest in Mine Action.” This theme draws out the foundational importance of lands being cleared from explosive threats and communities living in the absence of fear from these indiscriminate weapons for peace to be able to prosper. Mines\, explosive remnants of war\, and improvised explosive devices continue to cause death and injury\, especially in situations of armed conflict. On average\, one person is killed or injured by such explosive device every hour. Many children are among the victims. The use of improvised explosive devices has expanded\, terrorizing civilians and threatening humanitarian actors and United Nations missions and personnel. Mine action saves lives\, provides security\, restores dignity\, unlocks land for productive use\, and creates the conditions for long-term stability. It transforms hazardous land into safe\, productive spaces. It enables humanitarian access\, facilitates development\, supports stabilization efforts\, and lays the groundwork for durable peace. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:Artemis II is a planned lunar spaceflight mission under the Artemis program\, led by NASA. It is intended to be the second flight of the Space Launch System (SLS)\, and is both the first crewed mission of the Orion spacecraft and the first crewed mission to the vicinity of the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. \nLaunch is scheduled for no earlier than April\, 2026. The 10-day mission will carry NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman\, Victor Glover\, and Christina Koch\, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen\, on a free-return trajectory around the Moon and back to Earth. Glover will become the first person of color\, Koch the first woman\, and Hansen the first non-American to travel to the Moon. The flight will take the crew farther from Earth than any previous human mission before reentering Earth’s atmosphere at a record speed of approximately 40\,000 km/h. Artemis II was originally designated Exploration Mission-2 (EM-2) and was initially intended to support the now-canceled Asteroid Redirect Mission. Its objectives were revised following the establishment of the Artemis program. The Artemis II mission plan is to send four astronauts in the first crewed Orion spacecraft into a lunar flyby using the Block 1 variant of the Space Launch System. The mission profile is a multi-trans-lunar injection (MTLI)\, or multiple departure burns\, and includes a free-return trajectory from the Moon. The Orion spacecraft will be sent to a high Earth orbit with a period of roughly 24 hours. During this time the crew will perform various checkouts of the spacecraft’s life support systems as well as an in-space rendezvous and proximity operations demonstration using the spent Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) as a target. When Orion reaches perigee once again\, it will fire its main engine to complete the TLI maneuver\, which will send it onto a lunar free-return trajectory\, before returning to Earth. Artemis II will test and demonstrate optical communications to and from Earth using the Orion Artemis II Optical Communications System (O2O). The O2O hardware will be integrated into the Orion spacecraft and includes an optical module (a 100 mm telescope and two gimbals)\, a modem and control electronics. O2O will communicate with ground stations in California and New Mexico. The test device will send data to Earth with a downlink rate of up to 260 megabits per second. \nNASA concluded a wet dress rehearsal for the agency’s Artemis II test flight early Tuesday morning February 3\, 2026\, successfully loading cryogenic propellant into the SLS (Space Launch System) tanks\, sending a team out to the launch pad to closeout Orion\, and safely draining the rocket. The wet dress rehearsal was a prelaunch test to fuel the rocket\, designed to identify any issues and resolve them before attempting a launch. Engineers pushed through several challenges during the two-day test and met many of the planned objectives. To allow teams to review data and conduct a second wet dress rehearsal. NASA will roll the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft for Artemis II off the launch pad at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida as soon as Tuesday\, Feb. 24. On Feb. 21\, managers decided to remove recently installed platforms before high winds descend on the Space Coast\, which poised teams for rollback while discussions about the issue were ongoing. Returning to the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy is required to determine the cause of the issue and fix it. Once NASA’s Artemis II SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft arrived at the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) Feb. 25\, technicians immediately began addressing why the flow of helium to the SLS upper stage was interrupted as engineers were reconfiguring the rocket following a successful wet dress rehearsal on Feb. 21. To make the repairs\, teams are installing two sets of internal access platforms inside the launch vehicle stage adapter and must remove thermal blankets that cover the area they are interested in – a point on the rocket’s interim cryogenic propulsion system\, or upper stage. The area provides connections for multiple umbilicals\, including tubing used to fill the upper stage with helium. Helium is used to maintain proper environmental conditions\, and to pressurize the stage for flight. \nOn Friday\, March 20\, NASA’s Artemis II SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft arrived at Launch Pad 39B after an 11-hour journey from the Vehicle Assembly Building at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA’s crawler-transporter 2 began its  6 km trek with the integrated SLS and Orion stacked on top of the mobile launcher at 18:20 CEST. The crawler carried the Moon rocket and spacecraft slowly and steadily toward the pad. At Pad 39B\, NASA teams were gearing up for the final stretch of prelaunch preparations ahead of launch as soon as Thursday\, April 2 at 00:24 CEST. The early April launch window includes opportunities through Monday\, April 6. NASA’s SLS rocket lifted off at 00:35 CEST Wednesday April 2 sending four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft on a planned test flight around the Moon and back. After the mission management team polled “Go” Thursday\, NASA’s Orion spacecraft fired its main engine for five minutes and 50 seconds beginning April 3 at 01:49 CEST\, to successfully complete the translunar injection (TLI) burn\, sending the crew in Orion out of Earth orbit and on a trajectory toward the Moon. On April 7\, the Artemis II mission wrapped up a seven-hour lunar flyby\, marking humanity’s first return to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972 and capturing images of the lunar far side. The momentous day began at 01:02:51 CEST as the astronauts set the record for the farthest distance from Earth traveled by any human. During a planned 40-minute loss of signal as Orion passed behind the Moon\, the spacecraft and its crew made their closest approach at 01:00:46 CEST\, flying at about 6544 kilometer above the surface. Two minutes later\, the crew reached the mission’s maximum distance from Earth at 406.771 km\, setting a new record for human spaceflight. En dat de hoeveelheid openbare kwaliteitsinformatie de afgelopen jaren nauwelijks toeneemt. In het rapport staan de resultaten. Deze meting is uitgevoerd om een stand van zaken te krijgen over de huidige mate van transparantie van kwaliteitsinformatie in de medisch-specialistische zorg in Nederland. Deze meting volgt uit de afspraken van het Aanvullend Zorg- en Welzijnsakkoord (AZWA). Hierin staan afspraken die partijen maken om meer informatie over kwaliteit van zorg transparant te maken. DESCRIPTION:Op 2 april 2026 heeft het Nationaal Contactpunt voor de OESO-richtlijnen (NCP) de initiële beoordeling gepubliceerd in de melding van de Asamblea Campesina\, PAX en SOMO tegen het Zweedse energiebedrijf Vattenfall inzake een vermeende schending van de OESO-richtlijnen. \nDe beslissing opent een weg voor slachtoffers van ‘bloedkolen’ om in dialoog te treden en genoegdoening te vragen voor ernstige mensenrechtenschendingen. De klacht gaat over de gedwongen verdrijving van meer dan 59.000 mensen uit landbouwgemeenschappen in Cesar\, in het noorden van Colombia. Families zijn vermoord\, bedreigd en van hun land verdreven door paramilitair geweld\, en een groot deel van dat land wordt nu gebruikt voor kolenmijnbouw. Kolen uit deze regio zijn jarenlang naar Europa geëxporteerd\, onder andere naar Vattenfall\, waardoor Europees energieverbruik en aanhoudende mensenrechtenschendingen verbonden zijn met elkaar. De Asamblea Campesina del Cesar por la Restitución de Tierras y el Buen Vivir (Asamblea Campesina)\, diende in april 2023 de klacht in\, samen met PAX en SOMO. DESCRIPTION:In 2007 werd door de VN resolutie 62/139 aanvaard\, waarin 2 april wordt uitgeroepen tot Wereld Autisme Bewustwording Dag (World Autism Awareness Day)\, bedoeld om iedereen bewust te maken van wat autisme is; in Nederland valt de dag in de Autismeweek. \nAutisme is een aangeboren pervasieve ontwikkelingsstoornis die zich kenmerkt door beperkingen in de sociale interactie\, de communicatie\, (bij kinderen tot 3 jaar) zich steeds herhalend gedrag en kan niet genezen worden. Iemand met een ernstige vorm van autisme kan niet zelfstandig leven. Mensen zien niet aan iemand dat deze autist is\, het is een onzichtbaar probleem. Daarom onderschatten veel mensen het. Tegenwoordig wordt autisme als onafhankelijk van de intelligentie beschouwd. Wat de oorzaken betreft\, zijn er maar weinig wetenschappelijk goed onderbouwde conclusies. DESCRIPTION:Greenpeace kan en wil niet toekijken hoe JBS verwoestende plannen vanuit Nederland uitrolt en bereidt zich daarom voor op een juridische strijd. \nJBS is al jaren berucht vanwege zijn controversiële praktijken. De van oorsprong Braziliaanse multinational is in verband gebracht met ontbossing en natuurverwoesting in de Amazone. De methaanuitstoot van het bedrijf is hoger dan die van Shell en ExxonMobil samen. Ook zijn er beschuldigingen van schendingen van arbeidsrechten en praktijken die neerkomen op slavernij-achtige werkomstandigheden in de toeleveringsketen van de vleesgigant. JBS wil miljarden investeren in nieuwe projecten wereldwijd. Het grootste gedeelte daarvan wordt geïnvesteerd in Nigeria. Maatschappelijke organisaties in Nigeria maken zich ernstige zorgen over de milieu-\, gezondheids- en sociale risico’s die opdoemen. Omdat het hoofdkantoor van JBS sinds vorig jaar op papier in Nederland gevestigd is\, stellen wij dat het bedrijf zich aan de Nederlandse zorgplicht moet houden. Als JBS niet op dit verzoek ingaat\, dient Greenpeace een verzoekschrift in bij de rechter om de gevraagde informatie af te dwingen. DESCRIPTION:Eerder werd besloten om overheidsgeld voor dierproeven\, met name op apen\, af te bouwen en te investeren in proefdiervrije innovaties. \nMaar die koers wordt nu deels teruggedraaid: onlangs heeft de Tweede Kamer een zorgwekkende stap gezet. Zo is zelfs besloten dat dierproeven op apen weer mogelijk blijven\, terwijl de samenleving en wetenschap juist richting alternatieven bewegen. Dit is niet alleen een ethische stap achteruit\, maar ook een gemiste kans voor vooruitgang. De feiten zijn duidelijk: \n•       In Nederland worden jaarlijks nog steeds honderdduizenden dierproeven uitgevoerd.\n•       De overheid gaf eerder al tientallen miljoenen euro’s per jaar uit aan dierproeven.\n•       Daartegenover stond jarenlang slechts een fractie voor proefdiervrije innovaties\, soms maar rond de €1\,3 miljoen per jaar. \nMet andere woorden: we blijven massaal investeren in een verouderd systeem\, terwijl betere alternatieven al bestaan. En die alternatieven zijn er wél. Denk aan: \n•       organ-on-a-chip technologie\n•       gekweekte menselijke weefsels en organoïden\n•       geavanceerde computermodellen en AI \nDeze methoden zijn vaak sneller\, betrouwbaarder en direct relevanter voor de mens dan dierproeven. Organisaties zoals Proefdiervrij laten al jaren zien dat de toekomst proefdiervrij is\, als we daar serieus in investeren. Sterker nog: er lag al een duidelijke politieke richting. Er was een plan om subsidies voor dierproeven af te bouwen en volledig te verschuiven naar proefdiervrije innovaties richting 2030. Dat pad wordt nu ondermijnd. Dit is niet uit te leggen. Niet aan de wetenschap. Niet aan de belastingbetaler. En al helemaal niet aan de dieren die hier de prijs voor betalen. Daarom de eisen: \n•       Dat overheidsgeld niet langer naar dierproeven gaat\, maar volledig naar proefdiervrije innovaties\n•       Dat eerdere besluiten om dierproeven af te bouwen worden nageleefd\n•       Transparantie over waar publiek geld naartoe gaat\n•       Een duidelijke deadline voor het uitfaseren van dierproeven \nDe toekomst van wetenschap is mensgericht\, innovatief en proefdiervrij.\nAlles daaronder is simpelweg achterhaald. DESCRIPTION:April is in 2026 al 25 jaar de Maand van de Filosofie! \nJaarlijks worden in april door heel Nederland en Vlaanderen filosofische nachten\, programma’s\, lezingen\, debatten en festivals georganiseerd rondom het thema van de Maand van de Filosofie. Het thema van 2026 is ‘Ken onszelve’. Elk jaar verschijnt er een nieuw filosofisch essay\, wordt de Socratesbeker uitgereikt aan het beste filosofieboek van het jaar en eens in de twee jaar wordt een nieuwe Denker des Vaderlands uitgeroepen. De filosofie of wijsbegeerte is de oudste theoretische discipline die het verlangen en het streven uitdrukt naar kennis en wijsheid. Zij kwam voor het eerst echt op in de 6e eeuw voor de Gregoriaanse jaartelling. Een beoefenaar van de filosofie wordt een filosoof of wijsgeer genoemd. In het dagelijks spraakgebruik wordt de term filosofie gebruikt om elke vorm van wijsheid of levensbeschouwing aan te duiden (zoals in “iemands filosofie”) of iemands uitgangspunten (zoals in “het sluit niet aan op de filosofie achter dit plan”). DESCRIPTION:SciStarter established an annual Citizen Science Month in April to celebrate and bring greater awareness to the valuable contributions of the public to scientific research and data collection endeavors. \nCitizen science (similar to community science\, crowd science\, crowd-sourced science\, civic science\, participatory monitoring\, or volunteer monitoring) is research conducted with participation from the general public\, or amateur/nonprofessional researchers or participants for science\, social science and many other disciplines. There are variations in the exact definition of citizen science\, with different individuals and organizations having their own specific interpretations of what citizen science encompasses. Citizen science is used in a wide range of areas of study including ecology\, biology and conservation\, health and medical research\, astronomy\, media and communications and information science. There are different applications and functions of citizen science in research projects. Citizen science can be used as a methodology where public volunteers help in collecting and classifying data\, improving the scientific community’s capacity. Citizen science can also involve more direct involvement from the public\, with communities initiating projects researching environment and health hazards in their own communities. Participation in citizen science projects also educates the public about the scientific process and increases awareness about different topics. Some schools have students participate in citizen science projects for this purpose as a part of the teaching curriculums. \nLinks:\nCitizen Science Month \nCitizen Science Month – USGS \nApril is Citizen Science Month \nKennis Burgerwetenschap

DESCRIPTION:Van 1 t/m 30 april 2026 worden tijdens de Maand van de Groene Tuin (voorheen Week van de Groene Tuin) verschillende groene én duurzame tips gedeeld\, een groene tuin is koeler in de zomer en kan beter met hevige neerslag omgaan en ook verwelkom je met een groene tuin vogels\, bijen en allerlei andere dieren. \nGroene tuinen en balkons zijn oases in een dorp of stad. Kleine dieren\, insecten en vogels vinden hier voedsel en schuilplaatsen. Een tuin vol leven is niet alleen leuk om naar te kijken\, maar ook nuttig. Bijen helpen bij de bestuiving van planten. Vogels\, egels en allerlei insecten helpen je tuin gezond en vrij van plagen te houden. Groene tuinen zijn belangrijk met het oog op klimaatadaptatie: het omgaan met de gevolgen van klimaatverandering\, zoals hitte\, droogte en wateroverlast. In periodes van hitte bieden bomen en planten natuurlijke schaduw en verkoeling. In periodes van veel regen of extreme buien\, kan regenwater in een groene tuin beter wegzakken dan in een volledig betegelde tuin. Bladluizen\, slakken en andere beestjes horen bij de natuur. Maar hoe voorkom je dat ze in jouw tuin uitgroeien tot een plaag? Zorg dat je planten gezond en sterk zijn\, dan zijn ze minder vatbaar voor ziekten en plagen. Ook kun je de natuurlijke vijanden van plagen uitnodigen en zorgen dat de beestjes jouw tuin geen aantrekkelijke plek vinden.
