DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, the International Labour Organization (ILO) – a United Nations (UN) agency whose mandate is to advance social and economic justice by setting international labour standards – organizes the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva to set the broad policies of the ILO\, including conventions and recommendations. \nAlso known as the “international parliament of labour”\, the conference makes decisions about the ILO’s general policy\, work programme and budget and also elects the Governing Body. Each member state is represented by a delegation composed of two government delegates\, an employer delegate\, a worker delegate. All of them have individual voting rights and all votes are equal\, regardless of the population of the delegate’s member State. The employer and worker delegates are normally chosen in agreement with the most representative national organizations of employers and workers. Usually\, the workers and employers’ delegates coordinate their voting. All delegates have the same rights and are not required to vote in blocs. Delegates can attend with advisers and substitute delegates\, and all have the same rights: they can express themselves freely and vote as they wish. Heads of State and prime ministers also participate in the Conference. DESCRIPTION:On 1 June 2026\, the European Commission adopted the Roadmap towards phasing out animal testing for chemical safety assessments. \nThis comprehensive approach encompasses a wide range of legislative domains\, including industrial chemicals\, pharmaceuticals\, and food additives\, and outlines over 30 key recommendations to facilitate the transition to alternative testing methods. The European Union has a long-standing policy of replacing\, reducing and refining animal testing (3Rs). Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union recognises the need to protect animals as sentient beings. Directive 2010/63/EU1 sets the goal of phasing out animal use for research and for regulatory purposes in the EU\, as soon as scientifically possible. Many pieces of chemical legislation contain a requirement to use animal testing only as a last resort. The European Commission is preparing a “Roadmap Towards Phasing Out Animal Testing for Chemical Safety Assessments”. This will serve as a guiding plan for accelerating the path towards replacing\, reducing and refining animal testing for the safety assessments of chemicals. The roadmap was announced in Communication C(2023)5041\, which was published as a response to the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) “Save cruelty-free cosmetics – Commit to a Europe without animal testing”. In the communication\, the Commission expressed its commitment to develop a roadmap that “will outline milestones and specific actions\, to be implemented in the short to longer term\, to reduce animal testing and that would be pre-requisites for a transition towards an animal-free regulatory system”. This response announces further elements that will accompany the roadmap and help reach its goals. Phasing out animal testing will require substantial time. For instance\, there are currently no available approaches that are sufficient for developing and validating methods. Het wordt elke zondagmorgen uitgezonden tussen 07:00 en 10:00 op NPO Radio 1. De beginmuziek is een bewerking van Vivaldi’s “Piccolo Concerto in C major” (RV 443). De tv editie wordt uitgezonden via NPO 2 op zondag\, vaak rond een thema. \nDe harlekijn staat in bloei\, een orchidee die bijna nergens meer voorkomt. Hier in de Braakman\, in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen\, doet hij het goed. Een zeegeul is hier al voor de Deltawerken afgesloten\, om zoet water en grond te creëren. In dit stukje ruige natuur\, omklemd door Zeeuwse landbouw\, leven reeën naast allerlei vogels als koereigers. De poelen zitten ook vol leven met salamanders en waterkevers. DESCRIPTION:Stripdagen Haarlem is een stripfestival dat sinds 1992 om het jaar georganiseerd wordt in Haarlem. \nHet vrij toegankelijke festival bestaat met name uit tentoonstellingen\, beurzen\, lezingen en kinderactiviteiten. DESCRIPTION:On 30 May\, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) spotlights the potato\, Solanum tuberosum (L.) – a crop regularly consumed by billions of people\, potatoes are a key crop across diverse farming systems globally\, ranging from smallholders producing diverse heirloom varieties by hand in the Andes\, to vast commercial\, mechanized farms in different continents. \nPotatoes contribute to the food security and nutrition as well as and livelihoods and employment of people in rural and urban areas the world over. The Day is an opportunity to build on the International Year of the Potato\, which was observed in 2008. The observance will also be used to underscore the importance of the crop to combating hunger and poverty and addressing environmental threats to agrifood systems. The roles of small-scale family farmers\, a significant proportion of whom are women\, in safeguarding the wide spectrum of the crop’s diversity\, will also be recognized\, while the cultural and culinary dimensions of the crop’s cultivation and consumption will be celebrated. The third observance of the International Day of Potato will be on 29 May 2026 (as 30 May falls on a Saturday)\, with the theme Where potatoes grow\, livelihoods flourish. The theme positions the role of potatoes in strengthening livelihoods for farmers and value chain actors —from the highlands of the Andes to Africa\, Europe\, Asia and beyond. By advancing potato farming and value chain development\, the crop contributes to poverty reduction\, resilience and more inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems.

The campaign offers flexibility for individuals and organisations to achieve a variety of goals. MS is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). In 2024\, there are 2.9 million people living with MS worldwide. MS is an inflammatory demyelinating condition. It is caused by damage to myelin – a fatty material that insulates nerves. In MS\, the loss of myelin affects the way nerves conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain. Symptoms can include blurred vision\, weak limbs\, tingling sensations\, unsteadiness\, memory problems\, and fatigue. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. MS is two to three times more common in women than in men. There is no drug that can cure MS\, but treatments are available which can modify the course of the disease. \nThe theme for World MS Day 2024-2025 is diagnosis. The name of the campaign is My MS Diagnosis and the tagline: navigating MS together. The My MS Diagnosis campaign advocates for early and accurate diagnosis for everyone living with MS. It highlights the global barriers to diagnosing MS\, raising awareness by sharing real stories and data. We are calling for better MS training for healthcare professionals\, new research\, and clinical advancements in MS diagnosis. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van recente uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. Terwijl 78% van de jongeren klimaatverandering als een serieus vraagstuk voor Nederland ziet\, voelt de helft van de jongeren zich niet gehoord door de overheid bij beslissingen over het klimaat. Als het gaat om verantwoordelijkheid\, kijken jongeren in de eerste plaats naar de overheid (44%)\, gevolgd door bedrijven (25%) en individuen (19%). Tegelijkertijd is er stevige kritiek van jongeren op het huidige beleid: 54% vindt dat de overheid niet genoeg doet en 26% vindt zelfs dat er veel te weinig gebeurt. Dit blijkt uit een representatief onderzoek onder 1.775 jongeren van 12 t/m 29 jaar van State of Youth NL. The 27th of May is the day when Emergency Medicine in Europe took its beginning. In London a group of visionary people signed the founding act of the European Society for Emergency Medicine. The aim was to build up a system model to grant to every citizen in Europe a professional\, competent and above all timely response to any life\, organ or limb threatening acute condition. DESCRIPTION:EU Space Days 2026 took place in Nicosia\, Cyprus\, on 26 and 27 May\, bringing the European space community together for the EU’s annual event dedicated to space policy\, industry\, innovation\, and strategic autonomy. \nOrganised under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU\, the event signalled Cyprus’s growing role in the European space ecosystem. Participants included representatives from EU institutions\, Member States\, EU agencies\, space organisations\, industry\, SMEs\, start-ups\, investors\, researchers\, and defence and security stakeholders\, making the event both a policy forum and a space for business exchange and networking. As a Member State increasingly engaged with the space sector and as holder of the Council Presidency\, Cyprus gave the event an institutional framing which reinforced a recurring message across both days: space is a shared European responsibility\, with an expanding number of Member States becoming active participants. This was also reflected in the months leading up to the event. In March 2026\, Cyprus completed the first activation and operational use of secure satellite communication services delivered through Governmental Satellite Communications (GOVSATCOM)\, following the launch of the service’s initial operations in January 2026. Space is increasingly central to the EU’s security\, resilience\, and economic future. Against that backdrop\, EU Space Days 2026 brought together senior EU decision-makers\, industry leaders\, start-ups\, and researchers in Nicosia\, Cyprus\, for two days of high-level discussions on the state and direction of Europe’s space endeavours.
