SUMMARY:NASA’s Europa Clipper Mission
DESCRIPTION:Europa Clipper (previously known as Europa Multiple Flyby Mission) is a space probe in development by NASA. \nPlanned for launch aboard a Falcon Heavy in October 2024 (the 21-day launch window period opens on October 10\, 2024)\, the spacecraft is being developed to study the Galilean moon Europa through a series of flybys while in orbit around Jupiter\, it is the largest spacecraft NASA has ever developed for a planetary mission. This mission is a scheduled flight of the Planetary Science Division\, designated a Large Strategic Science Mission\, and funded under the Planetary Missions Program Office‘s Solar System Exploration program as its second flight. It is also supported by the new Ocean Worlds Exploration Program. Europa Clipper will perform follow-up studies to those made by the Galileo spacecraft during its eight years (1995 – 2003) in Jupiter orbit\, which indicated the existence of a subsurface ocean underneath Europa’s ice crust. Plans to send a spacecraft to Europa were initially conceived with projects such as Europa Orbiter and Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter\, in which a spacecraft would be injected into orbit around Europa. However\, due to the adverse effects of radiation from Jupiter’s magnetosphere in Europa orbit\, it was decided that it would be safer to inject a spacecraft into an elliptical orbit around Jupiter and make 44 close flybys of the moon instead. The mission began as a joint investigation between the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)\, and will be built with a scientific payload of nine instruments contributed by JPL\, APL\, Southwest Research Institute\, University of Texas at Austin\, Arizona State University and University of Colorado Boulder. The upcoming mission complements ESA‘s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer launched in 2023\, which will fly-by Europa twice and Callisto multiple times before moving into orbit around Ganymede. The spacecraft will use gravity assists from Mars in February 2025 and Earth in December 2026\, before arriving at Europa in April 2030. NASA will provide live coverage of prelaunch and launch activities for Europa Clipper\, the agency’s mission to explore Jupiter’s icy moon Europa. DESCRIPTION:Om boeren en de natuur in Europa te beschermen zijn de meest gevaarlijke pesticiden verboden in de landbouw\, toch draaien er in Europa fabrieken met verboden gifstoffen op volle toeren en lidstaten blijven jaar in jaar uit meedoen aan de export naar landen waar de wetgeving minder beschermend is voor de volksgezondheid en het milieu. \nOok Nederlandse bedrijven maken zich hier schuldig aan. Bijna 15.000 ton (15.000.000 kg) aan EU-verboden pesticiden werden in 2022 vanuit Nederland verhandeld naar buiten Europa. Alsof de risico’s op ziekte van boeren en omwonenden geen probleem meer is als de containers de Europese grens over zijn. Deze dubbele morele standaard moet zo snel mogelijk stoppen. En dat is nog niet alles: resten van deze pesticiden komen via import op bananen\, rozijnen en rijst weer bij ons terug. Chevron is the largest producer of natural gas for Israel and the largest multinational corporation with a significant stake in Israel’s energy sector. It operates and partially owns the largest active Israeli gas fields\, Tamar and Leviathan\, and the smaller and undeveloped Dalit field\, all of which are located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea\, west of Haifa. The gas from Tamar is processed in a rig that is located farther south\, off the coast of Isdud/Ashdod. In 2023\, Chevron made an estimated $1.5 billion in revenue from Tamar and Leviathan gas sales alone\, mostly from exports to Egypt and Jordan. Chevron partially owns the Mari B gas field off the coast of the Gaza Strip\, but it has been depleted and inactive since 2013. Chevron also operates and partially owns the East Mediterranean Gas (EMG) pipeline\, which runs from Israel to Egypt off the coast of the Gaza Strip. As the operator of these gas fields and the pipeline\, Chevron is in charge of all operations of these projects\, including planning\, construction\, production\, and supply. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium in Russia\, which supplies crude oil to Israel\, and the main Kazakh companies that supply this oil\, are also partially owned by Chevron. Between 2021 and December 2024\, Chevron spent nearly $28.5 million on lobbying the U.S. government\, including on energy issues related to Israel. DESCRIPTION:The Observatory Science Centre is an educational charity which has called the Grade II listed\, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux\, East Sussex\, home for the last 30 years. \nThe Canadian landlords\, Queen’s University\, who also own Herstmonceux Castle\, are not renewing the Science Centre’s lease\, so come the end of the 2026 season the Science Centre will be homeless. Over the years the science centre have worked tirelessly to fund and restore the site and the telescopes back to their former glory. The centre is a major venue for exhibitions\, lectures and educational programmes. The renovated telescopes provide a unique setting for the general public\, schools\, colleges\, and brownie and scout groups to learn about science\, space and the world around them. Whilst the Science Centre is in search for a new site to continue operations beyond 2026\, they should not have to leave the Observatory site at all and the historic site should be preserved for future generations as a great educational tool of significant historical importance. DESCRIPTION:Biomass is an Earth observing satellite planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 29 April 2025 from Kourou\, French Guiana on a Vega C launch vehicle\, the mission will provide the first comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. \nIt is meant to last for five years\, monitoring at least eight growth cycles in the world’s forests. The Biomass satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme\, which consists of Earth observation missions. Its initial launch date was set to 2020\, but that has since been delayed to 2025. The entire cost of the mission was placed at around 400 million euros. The main scientific instrument aboard Biomass will be a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz. DESCRIPTION:The Vera C. Rubin Observatory\, formerly known as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)\, is an astronomical observatory in Chile\, its main task will be carrying out a synoptic astronomical survey\, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. \nThe word “synoptic” is derived from the Greek words σύν (syn ’together’) and ὄψις (opsis ‘view’)\, and describes observations that give a broad view of a subject at a particular time. The observatory is located on the El Peñón peak of Cerro Pachón\, a 2\,682-meter-high mountain in Coquimbo Region\, in northern Chile\, alongside the existing Gemini South and Southern Astrophysical Research Telescopes. The LSST Base Facility is located about 100 kilometres away from the observatory by road\, in the city of La Serena. The observatory is named for Vera Rubin\, an American astronomer who pioneered discoveries about galactic rotation rates. The Rubin Observatory will house the Simonyi Survey Telescope\, a wide-field reflecting telescope with an 8.4-meter primary mirror that will photograph the entire available sky every few nights. The telescope uses a novel three-mirror design\, a variant of three-mirror anastigmat\, which allows a compact telescope to deliver sharp images over a very wide 3.5-degree-diameter field of view. Images will be recorded by a 3.2-gigapixel charge-coupled device imaging (CCD) camera\, the largest digital camera ever constructed. \nThe LSST was proposed in 2001\, and construction of the mirror began (with private funds) in 2007. LSST then became the top-ranked large ground-based project in the 2010 Astrophysics Decadal Survey\, and the project officially began construction on 1 August 2014\, when the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) authorized the FY2014 portion ($27.5 million) of its construction budget. Funding comes from the NSF\, the United States Department of Energy\, and private funding raised by the dedicated international non-profit organization\, the LSST Discovery Alliance. Operations are under the management of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). The total construction cost is expected to be about $680 million. Site construction began on 14 April 2015 with the ceremonial laying of the first stone. The first on-sky observations with the engineering camera occurred on 24 October 2024\, while system first light images were released 23 June 2025. Full survey operations are planned to begin later in 2025\, due to COVID-related schedule delays. Rubin Observatory data is scheduled to become fully public after two years. \nLinks:\nVera C. De boring op Strandeiland is ook begin september 2025 gestart. Het aanvullende onderzoek brengt de ondergrond in drie dimensies in kaart\, vandaar dat dit type onderzoek 3D-seismiek genoemd wordt. Het doel is het verzamelen van meer data over de diepe ondergrond. Deze informatie is nodig voor de ontwikkeling van aardwarmte als warmtebron. Oftewel\, de verwarming van huizen en bedrijven door warmte die van nature in de aarde aanwezig is. Om dit te kunnen realiseren zijn er naast warmtenetten\, aardwarmte-productielocaties nodig die huizen en bedrijven van warmte kunnen voorzien. Voordat de productielocaties gekozen en ontwikkeld kunnen worden\, moet er meer informatie over de ondergrond verzameld worden. SUMMARY:ESCAPADE mission to Mars
DESCRIPTION:Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers (ESCAPADE) is a planned spacecraft mission to Mars consisting of two spacecraft known as Blue and Gold\, the mission is led by UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory. \nOnce expected to launch in October 2024\, it is part of NASA‘s SIMPLEx program. In August 2024 the spacecraft arrived at the launch site. However\, NASA postponed the launch due to schedule and technical issues involved with the mission’s New Glenn launch vehicle\, which was set to debut with the launch of these spacecraft. Launch on the New Glenn is now planned for no earlier than November 9\, 2025. The science goals of ESCAPADE are to: \n\nunderstand the processes controlling the structure of Mars’ hybrid magnetosphere and how it guides ion flows\nunderstand how energy and momentum are transported from the solar wind through Mars’ magnetosphere\nunderstand the processes controlling the flow of energy and matter into and out of the collisional atmosphere\n\nThere are three science experiments onboard each identical spacecraft: EMAG\, EESA\, and ELP. EMAG\, which was developed by the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center\, is a magnetometer that will measure DC magnetic fields up to 1000 nT\, mounted at the end of the boom to reduce magnetic noise from the spacecraft. EESA is an electrostatic analyzer designed to measure the energies\, fluxes\, and masses of suprathermal ions from 2 eV to 20 keV and energies and fluxes of suprathermal electrons from 3 eV to 10 keV. It is mounted on the upper deck of the spacecraft bus\, with a 240° x 120° field of view for electrons and 247.5° x 90° field of view for ions. ELP\, developed by the Space and Atmospheric Instrumentation Lab at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University\, is a Langmuir probe consisting of three separate sensors: the multi-needle Langmuir probe (mNLP) consists of 4 thin needles mounted in two pairs ~3/4 way up the boom and measures thermal electron density; the two planar ion probes (PIPs) are mounted on the instrument deck and measure thermal ion density\, and the floating potential probe (FPP) is also mounted on the spacecraft deck and measures changes in relative spacecraft electrostatic potential. Once the nominal science orbit is achieved\, approximately six months after arriving at Mars\, Science Campaign A involves both spacecraft flying in the same orbit at varying distances from one another\, ~170 × 8\,400 km (5.66 hours) with an inclination of 65 degrees. This will last approximately six months\, at which time Blue will lower its apoapsis to 7\,000 km and Gold will raise its apoapsis to 10\,000 km. With different orbital periods (4.9 and 6.6 hours)\, the orbits will precess (due to Mars’ nonuniform gravity field) at different rates and thus separate\, allowing simultaneous measurements of distant parts of the Mars magnetosphere. This campaign will operate for approximately five months until the end of the nominal science mission less than three years after launch. DESCRIPTION:2025-2026 has been declared the Year of Trade Union Climate Action. \nWorkers everywhere are fighting for action to tackle climate change\, organising to futureproof at-risk jobs\, mobilising to protect vulnerable communities here and abroad\, and sweating for a low-carbon economy that works for workers. Backed by motions at both the 2024 and 2025 TUC Congress\, November sees the start of an important year of UK union action on the climate emergency. On Friday 14 November\, 2025 the Campaign Against Climate Change (CACC) Trade Union Group hopes every union branch in every workplace will demand action to tackle the climate crisis through lunchtime protests\, handing out leaflets\, linking up with community actions\, or raising issues such as working temperatures and air quality at work\, for example. The following day\, events demanding climate action and climate justice will take place across the world to coincide with the COP 30 international climate negotiations in Brazil. The UNISON public services\, Unite general\, NEU education\, PCS public and commercial services\, UCU university and college\, FBU firefighters’ and BFAWU foodworkers’ unions are among those taking part in the year of action. As well as the events on 14 and 15 November\, the NEU will support a National Emergency Briefing on climate and nature in London on 27 November. Eight leading experts will brief 850 politicians and business\, culture and faith leaders\, as well as the media\, with the aim of helping “to trigger a societal tipping point towards emergency-level climate and nature action”. The NEU is also running a series of continuing professional development webinars for members\, while its annual Health\, Safety and Environment Briefing in November includes sessions on clean air\, green bargaining\, and the Climate Ambassadors scheme. The latter\, promoted by the Department for Education\, aims to boost sustainability and climate action in educational settings. DESCRIPTION:Al meer dan 10.000 mensen willen dat de organisatie van de Tour de France de route van een van de etappes aanpast en tekenden allemaal een petitie\, want deze etappe gaat namelijk via de Col de Sarenne die ligt in de bufferzone van het beschermde natuurgebied Nationaal Park Les Écrin. \n\nIn dit gebied leven onder meer moerassneeuwhoenders\,  alpensneeuwhoenders en steenpatrijzen\, drie bedreigde vogelsoorten.  Deze soorten broeden in juli\, precies in de periode dat de Tour langskomt. In 2013 ging de Tour de France ook al over de Sarenne. Toen werd er ook een petitie tegen de Touretappe gestart. Die werd 12.000 keer ondertekend. De etappe werd helaas niet aangepast. Initiatiefnemer Matthieu Stelvio liet de moed niet zakken en startte opnieuw een petitie om de etappe van 2026 tegen te houden. Stelvio is bang dat de duizenden toeschouwers\, de herrie van helikopters en 16.000 amateurwielrenners die zes dagen voor de Touretappe meedoen aan een evenement\, schade toebrengen aan het natuurgebied. In 2023 werd er wel een Tour etappe aangepast. De etappe eindigde op de Puy de Dome\, een vulkaan die alleen voor voetgangers toegankelijk is\, en op de UNESCO-werelderfgoedlijst staat. DESCRIPTION:Justice for Palestine verzoekt de Europese Commissie om bij de Raad een voorstel in te dienen voor de volledige opschorting van de associatieovereenkomst tussen de EU en Israël. \nVolgens de Europese Commissie (Europese Dienst voor extern optreden\, nota van het Bureau van de speciale vertegenwoordiger van de EU voor de mensenrechten\, 20 juni 2025) is de staat Israël verantwoordelijk voor een ongekend groot aantal doden en gewonden onder burgers\, grootschalige ontheemding en de systematische vernietiging van ziekenhuizen en medische voorzieningen in Gaza. Israël heeft ook een blokkade van humanitaire hulp ingesteld die zou kunnen neerkomen op hongersnood als oorlogsmethode. Israël schendt meerdere regels en verplichtingen uit hoofde van het internationaal recht en zorgt er niet voor dat het misdrijf genocide wordt voorkomen\, zoals het Internationaal Gerechtshof heeft bevolen. Toch heeft de Europese Unie haar associatieovereenkomst met Israël\, de hoeksteen van de bilaterale handels-\, economische en politieke samenwerking tussen de EU en Israël\, nog steeds niet opgeschort. DESCRIPTION:Om praktische\, maar ook klimatologische redenen begint de meteorologische lente op een vaste datum op 1 maart op het noordelijk halfrond en op 1 september op het zuidelijk halfrond\, deze duurt dan respectievelijk tot 1 juni en 1 december. \nDe lente of het voorjaar is een van de vier seizoenen. De lente volgt op de winter en wordt gevolgd door de zomer. Tijdens de lente worden in de noordelijker streken van het noordelijk halfrond de bomen veel groener en gaan veel planten bloeien; geleidelijk wordt het warmer en wordt de kans op vorst kleiner. Een van de eerste internationale weerorganisaties onder leiding van de Duitse keurvorst Karl Theodor\, de Societas Meteorologica Palatina\, besloot in 1780 om steeds drie opeenvolgende kalendermaanden als één seizoen te beschouwen. Seizoenen konden zo beter met elkaar vergeleken worden. Sindsdien duurt de meteorologische lente op het noordelijk halfrond van 1 maart tot en met 31 mei. DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of computer researchers have signed an open letter calling for more careful public review of online age verification requirements and the privacy costs. \nSocial media is going the way of alcohol\, gambling\, and other social sins: Societies are deciding it’s no longer kid stuff. Lawmakers point to compulsive use\, exposure to harmful content\, and mounting concerns about adolescent mental health. So\, many propose to set a minimum age\, usually 13 or 16. In cases when regulators demand real enforcement rather than symbolic rules\, platforms run into a basic technical problem. The only way to prove that someone is old enough to use a site is to collect personal data about who they are. And the only way to prove that you checked is to keep the data indefinitely. Age-restriction laws push platforms toward intrusive verification systems that often directly conflict with modern data-privacy law. This is the age-verification trap.
